Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, a committee chairman known for his devotion to Baltimore and civil rights and for blunt and passionate speechmaking, died of longstanding health problems early Thursday morning, his office said. He was 68 years old.

Cummings had represented Maryland's 7th Congressional District since 1996 and was at the center of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, in his role as House Oversight Committee Chairman.

The congressman hadn't taken part in a roll call vote since Sept. 11, failing to return for work after a medical procedure he said would only keep him away for a week, according to The Associated Press. Cummings last spoke on the House floor in late July before the House went on a six-week recess.

Rest in power Mr. Cummings. Thanks for all that you did for America.

We have lost a great man and he will be missed in this era of lobbyists and crooks. Wait a minute, I am being redundant.

Select quotations from Cumming's closing statement at Michael Cohen's hearing:

You know I've sat here, and I've listened to all this, and it's very painful. It's very painful. You made a lot of mistakes, Mr. Cohen " and you've admitted that. And, you know, one of the saddest parts of this whole thing is that some very innocent people are hurting too. And you acknowledged that. And, um, that's your family.

And, so you come here today, you ... deep in my heart ... when I practiced law I represented a lot of lawyers who got in trouble. And, you come saying I have made my mistakes, but now I want to change my life. And you know, if we ... as a nation did not give people an opportunity after they've made mistakes to change their lives, a whole lot of people would not do very well.

"I don't know why this is happening for you, but I hope a small part of this is for our country to be better," Cummings continued. "If I hear you correctly, you are crying out for getting back to normal. Sounds to me like you want to make sure our democracy stays intact."

"The one meeting I had with the president, I said, The greatest gift we can give to our children is making sure we give them a democracy better than the one we came upon.' "

"And I'm hoping all of us can get back to this democracy we want and we should be passing on to our children, so they can do better than we did," he said. "When we're dancing with the angels, the question will be asked, In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?' "

Now is your time to dance. Dance Elijah, dance in joy.

Elijah Cummings was a man I work towards being more like.

I will miss his compassion, his dedication, his integrity, and his passion.

#4 and contradictory.

Cummings had his warts, but his bona fides in the area of civil rights are almost unmatched.

He embodied JFK's famous dictum:

"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country."

I should give you marks for irony.

PhesterB talking about "festering hate"... when your purpose in this forum is fomenting hate... or... more accurately... supporiting those that do... because you lack the nuggets to do it yourself.

OH... and BTW... Trumplethinskin is leaving office in disgrace... and you get to own that one too.

Actually, saying bad things about Trump is just bad Karma.

So generate some good karma for yourself by saying...

* TRUMP 2020

I agree with too young - he was a mere 67. I have listened to interviews with him in the past when he spoke about the marches and the things that happened to him. He was truly a courageous man.

Honestly he is one of the few politicians on a list of people I would like to meet (John McCain was another). I didn't always agree with him but he was a well spoken, intelligent and passionate man.

Rest In Peace.

TDS is the syndrome where you passionately support and defend a con man, crook, and foreign puppet, no matter how many lies he tells and how many crimes he commits.

It's gonna be hilarious to watch your whole cult pretend you never supported him in 10 years.

But now you know. You're welcome. You should learn to question what your cult tells you. Open your mind.

Wonderful tribute by Trey Gowdy:

Trey Gowdy @TGowdySC

Elijah Cummings was one of the most powerful, beautiful & compelling voices in American politics. The power and the beauty came from his authenticity, his conviction, the sincerity with which he held his beliefs. We rarely agreed on political matters.

We never had a cross word outside of a committee room. He had a unique ability to separate the personal from the work. The story of Elijah's life would benefit everyone, regardless of political ideation.

My understanding is that several years ago, Rep ------- contracted an infection during a procedure to replace his aortic heart valve. While he recovered from the surgery, the effects of the infection had dogged him ever since. For example, earlier this year he contracted an infection in one of his knees. This is why he had had to use a wheelchair for the last several months. It appears that they were never able to rid him of the infection and it continued to manifested itself, attacking different parts of his body until it reached the point where it simply overcame him.

I've paid particular attention to this since I had my aortic valve replaced back in January 2017. I was fortunate as the only post-operative issues that I've had was that they needed to install an implanted pacemaker due to damaging the nerve bundle to my left ventricle, something that happens in about 25% of these procedures. The good news is that the nerves have since reconstituted themselves to the point where my heart is once more self-pacing. Note that the pacemaker is still there, just that it's now in a sort of standby mode, ready if it's ever needed. Besides, the battery should now last longer ;-)

Oh I know what it stands for.

You need to look up DERANGEMENT.

It requires far more DERATNGEMENT to defend trump than it does to support him.

Remember when he said he never paid stormy daniels? Remember when he called it FAKE NEWS?

great man...one of the elder statesmen
of the Civil Rights movement, and an authentic
honorable politician....which is more than a
little rare these days...(stares at the Orange Mess

and believed in what he said, a man of conviction.
A huge loss.

I understand that an anecdotal deflection is the best you can do.

Consider it noted. And tell your cult leader his talking points aren't working on critical and thinking minds. Maybe he'll give some new ones.

BTW, "Whataboutismm!! Whataboutism!" something you say you are against, but engage in relentlessly.

Do as you say, not as you do, right speaksoftly?

No surprise here. Anything new to add to the the discussion, speaksoftly? I think most people already know you are a cult servant.

Just like trump - accuse your opponent of your own flaws. If you're putin's puppet, say THEYRE putin's puppet. If you're corrupt, say THEYRE corrupt. If you're in a cult, say THEYRE in a cult.

Who is my CULT LEADER in your lie? Yours is clear.
