Beijing may end up beating America in building a working, viable naval railgun. China could have the world's most powerful naval gun by 2025, according to a U.S. intelligence report.

In theory, a railgun should be much cheaper than, say, a $1.4 million Tomahawk missile, which offers greater range but also can be shot down or jammed. A warship could also carry a huge number of small but high-velocity railgun projectiles

U.S. intelligence apparently possesses remarkably specific information, such as each Chinese railgun round costs between $25,000 and $50,000.

"China's railgun was first seen in 2011 and underwent testing in 2014," sources told CNBC.

"Between 2015 and 2017 the weapon was calibrated to strike at extended ranges, increasing its lethality. By December 2017, the weapon was successfully mounted on a warship and began at-sea testing, a feat no other nation has accomplished."

So?

It is cheaper to rent rooms.
No need to fight the USA.

So?

When was the last time naval ships were close enough in combat to fire at each other? WWII?

striking a target 124 miles away at speeds of up to 1.6 miles per second.....a shot fired from Washington, DC could reach Philadelphia in under 90 seconds

Navy tactics changed with the times.

They will change again. Nothing is written in stone, Admiral Saab. LOL

Navy tactics changed with the times.

Ship launched anti-ship missiles have a longer range than that rail gun.

Air launched are even further.

Me thinks this is much ado about nothing and is more China fluffing by our resident *ahem* "Texan".

Navy is obsolete.

China is testing a ship-mounted railgun "capable of striking a target 124 miles away at speeds of up to 1.6 miles per second"

All this comes across as sort of a Chinese version of The Guns of Navarone.

Neutralized in flight by railgun.

Air launched are ...

Neutralized in flight by railgun.

Me thinks...

Me also think.

Me think I write to Chinese Navy, US Navy and whomever else Navy to stop wasting their time with stoopid railguns because Admiral JPW has spoken! Amen and -- too Chinese Navy/US Navy!

It's wise for China to pursue anti-ship capabilities.

Basically, if successful, that means the only way we can touch China is by nuking them from orbit.

The US isn't going to touch China. Trump just ran away from Turkey.

Time to bring the troops home and give them their severance package.

#13 -- It's refreshing to see you make sense.

Bring our troops home.

Let those savage bastards who live from the eastern Med and Black Sea to the sub-Continent do whatever mindless and barbaric things they do with out the US. Don't get me wrong -- we should sell them all the cool military toys they are too stupid to make themselves. But keep our troops out of there.

Read a little more about the system. The rail gun requires enormous amounts of electricity, enough to light up a mid sized city. 120 jewels or the equivalent to the power requirement of Seattle,(think lighting strike). The prime limitation is the tube, the plasma created runs about 11,000+ degrees, which tends to vaporize the material inside. Yep, we can throw a projectile a long ways, but not for long,(yet). Lasers don't have this problem.

I don't think so...there is a mountain range in between DC and philly....

#21 | Posted by Ottodog at 2019-10-20 01:14 AM | Reply

And 124 miles is too short to begin with.

Launch it into orbit, let it collect power, fire, repeat.

If the tube breaks, well, it only needs to work a few times to work.

Optional: Launch Seattle into space as well.

Did anybody see the Chinese military parade for their 70th? I am more concerned about all the nukes sitting atop the children's floats. Little kids, cartoon characters and nuclear warheads. How cool.

We gave up because you have to stop your ship and dump all it's power into the rail-gun. Instead we are making a supergun that fires an advanced chemically propelled round that does the same thing.

Sitz knows about this ask him. I have to eat breakfast. I think it will be Chinese this time. Or maybe it's thier lunch we will eat.

Having sat with an officer in charge of carrier defense and listened to him go on & on about chasing out decades of competence in favor of chicks he's trying to bang by promising them they'll be chiefs one day.. our carriers are screwed.

You are a silly person. Try Jane's. SLRC. The US Army has been working on it for years. They're more competent at dev projects than the Navy. Being so well read, you clearly know Kelly Johnson's rules for dealing with the Navy. Starve before you have to.

The US isn't going to touch China.

China isnt a threat to the U.S. Never will be. China better be more worried about Japan if we unleash them to make a military again.

China isnt a threat to the U.S. Never will be.

China will only be a threat if you treat them like one.

YOU, on the other hand, are the REAL threat to America.
