President Trump's conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and others reinforced his perception of Ukraine as a hopelessly corrupt country - one that Trump now also appears to believe sought to undermine him in the 2016 U.S. election, the officials said.

The role played by Putin and Orban, a hard-right leader who has often allied himself with the Kremlin's positions, was described in closed-door testimony last week by George Kent, a deputy assistant secretary of state, before House impeachment investigators, U.S. officials said.

Kent cited the influence of those leaders as a factor that helped sour Trump on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the months leading up to their July 25 phone call " a conversation that triggered an extraordinary whistleblower complaint as well as a House impeachment inquiry.

Neither of those foreign leaders specifically encouraged Trump to see Ukraine as a potential source of damaging information about Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, nor did they describe Kyiv as complicit in an unsubstantiated 2016 election conspiracy, officials said.

U.S. officials emphasized that while Putin and Orban denigrated Ukraine, Trump's decision to seek damaging material on Biden was more directly driven by Trump's own impulses and Kyiv conspiracy theories promoted by his attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani.

Pres Putin's ultimate deflection attempt: it was Ukraine, not Russia.

And Pres Trump seems to have fallen for it, hook, line and sinker.

"And Pres Trump seems to have fallen for it, hook, line and sinker."

I doubt he has "fallen" for anything. He is bought and paid for and has no choice in the matter. Trump will do what his master tells him to do.

It should be obvious that Trump is currying favor with foreign leaders so as to expand his business opportunities in(to) those countries. Trump has to be bent out of shape by his impending impeachment. Not only will the impeachment stain his name from a historical perspective, impeachment and removal from office is likely to result in him spending time in prison. Either way, his "brand" is severely tarnished and not likely to command the respect and value it would have were he not to be impeached.

The name Trump will become an American History trivia question i.e. Who was the 3rd president to be impeached? In fact, once he's out of office, I want him to be so embarrassed that he will keep his head down and never tweet again. Let him fade into the sunset forever without a peep or a squeek.
