Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric clashes with economic reality out here in the hardworking [Texas] Panhandle. Most of the 3,200 residents of Cactus work at the massive JBS Cactus Beef Plant, located across the highway from the elementary school. It's one of the largest meat processing plants in the nation.

@#1 ... problem solved! ...

You forgot that the low unemployment rate means there are few to fill those positions.

Also, you forgot the "pay a living wage" part.

There is a reason why companies seek out illegal immigrants to employ in their companies --- the lower wages mean more profit.

Additionally, illegal immigrants are less likely to complain when the working conditions are below the safe minimums.

So, for the employers, it is a win-win situation to hire illegal immigrants. To the point that employers place want ads in Mexican newspapers trying to get people to come to the US and work.

So, for the employers, it is a win-win situation to hire illegal immigrants.

The "employers" hire subcons for larger companies like "janitorial services" & "gardening services" and "temp agencies"

All the raids showed, the hires were supplied by "contractors", which took a cut of the illegal immigrants "paycheck".

Destroy one of these contract-for-hire companies and two more sprout up, because there is an over supply of illegal immigrants.

Typically subcons are run by Hispanics for obvious reasons.

"Destroy one of these contract-for-hire companies and two more sprout up"

Then arrest their hirers.

You keep pretending the trail stops.

@#4 ... All the raids showed ...

All the raids? Not really.

Some of the raids? Yup.

... Destroy one of these contract-for-hire companies and two more sprout up, because there is an over supply of illegal immigrants. ...

More likely because there is a demand from the companies that want the cheap labor.

It's about the profit.

If the companies truly wanted to hire people who can work legally, then they would advertise locally and pay the wages required to attract them.

But the companies do not do that.

I love an article that points out facts that cause both parties to cringe. Reps will hate this because illegal immigrants are taking up our resources. Dems will hate this because it completely disproves their "illegal immigrants don't take our resources". Well, the quote "On Tuesday, voters will decide on a $107 million bond project for Dumas Independent School District, to which Cactus belongs. It includes a brand-new elementary school for Cactus, in part to accommodate all the recent immigrant children. The bond package is expected to pass." proves you to be 100% wrong.

#7 Nobody argues "Illegal immigrant children take zero resources."
Just as nobody argues "Citizen children take zero resources."

Need workers? Let them out of prison.

#9 | Posted by Petrous, As I remember the words of the 13th Amendment, a term as a slave would be a serious motive not to engage in criminal activity. Remember about 70% of prison inmates are convicted of "nonviolent" crimes. About the same amount are under 40 years old. Get some trailers, some trackers worn, and put these guys to work harvesting or what ever. Yes, they could walk away, but then they could also go back to the big cage after they were apprehended.

Wait, your idea for ending illegal immigration is slave labor?

When you write "immigrant", why do you write like it's "illegal immigrant"? These people in the district are there legally. They are paying taxes. They are making a company profitable.

So what the hell are you talking about?

Yeah, who needs actual employees?
Everyone breaks the law all the time, so let's just punish citizens the way we do illegals, with permanent detention and forced labor!

Not wearing a seatbelt? Three months in the fields.
Failure to use turn signal? Six months in the fields.
Speeding ticket? One year in the fields.
Jaywalking? Two years in the fields.

#14 | Posted by snoofy Yep, I said it, penal slavery could end illegal immigration. First, penal slavery should be punishment for felony crime, not misdemeanors. Hell, most counties use "public service" to clean up parks and roadsides now. Most are working off fines. We have 2 million behind bars now, another couple more subject to immediate reincarnation. We don't have to go whole gulag, we haven't got a Siberia to hide what the government does. But we shouldn't subsidize big ag, but these guys should be competitive. They do this on a limited scale in Texas, while back they rehabbed wards at a mental institution I worked at. Trailers and trackers, a sheriff's deputy would take roll in the morning. They got some money and three-fers while they worked.
