There are over 1,600 dams in the United States rated in "poor or unsatisfactory condition," a two-year AP investigation has discovered. An unsafe dam could fail without warning, putting communities in grave risk. "There are thousands of people in this country that are living downstream from dams that are probably considered deficient given current safety standards," said former Ohio dam safety official Mark Ogden.

Around 20% of state-regulated high-hazard dams nationwide don't even have an emergency plan, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Per the article ...

... the Association of State Dam Safety Officials.

The association estimates it would takemore than $70 billion to repairand modernize the nation's more than 90,000 dams.

But unlike much other infrastructure, most U.S. dams are privately owned.

That makes it difficult for regulators to require improvements from operators who are unable or unwilling to pay the steep costs.

Last September the Federal Reserve barfed up $128 billion over a 48 hour span for banks that were teetering on the brink of a meltdown.

There were no public debates on how America was going to pay for it, the Fed just did it.

Same with the 2008 Wall Street crash where $12.8 Trillion was used to prop up the economy ... youtu.be

So $70 billion to fix America's crapola dams? No problem. America has plenty of money.

And as Ralph Nader says, Congress can either "make it happen" or "not make it happen".

If I were Nancy Pelosi, I'd pass House legislation that addresses this issue, which would create local jobs ... and put GOP senators on the record with either a yea or nay vote -- same with a Trump veto.

And if it were signed by Trump, take credit for it.

(actually I'd address the larger $2 Trillion infrastructure issue which repairing these dams is subordinate to, but work with me timid DR corporatist minded Democrats)

America must fix these dams, gosh dern it!

Here's Democratic bumper sticker idea ...

Dam The Dams & Damn Trump
*** Full Speed Ahead ***

It's got planning and action, and takes a swipe at Trump.

I mean, do I have to do everything?

^You' (and Trump) have done nothing, as usual.

How can that be when in 2016 I supported Bernie, then Hillary, and in 2018 voted a straight Dem ticket in the midterms?

How many times will you accept being lied to by rich corporate Democrats?

Obviously, the 1%-ers need another tax break. That will solve the crumbling infrastructure problem.

Sorry, your bumper sticker has been censored for using profanity. The profane word has been replaced with dashes.

Trump has proven that a wall on the border outweighs the necessity of safe dams.

Even if the house passes a bill... it dies at Moscow Mitchs feet.

1,600 Dams in U.S. at Grave Risk of Failure

So what? Billionaires needed more yachts.

1600 dams have structurally gone unsafe within the last three years.

There needs to be an investigation. How does 1600 dams suddenly start failing. I mean, I could see deterioration over many years, but within three years, suddenly they are falling apart.

Is this global warming, climate change, unexpected weather, unusially high and low temperatures within three years?

Apparently some states aren't maintaining their dams, like California, which came close to a disastrous failure of the Oroville Dam.

SOME STATES, so nulli is of course going to pick out the most liberal one to fit his trump cult narrative.
