Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

This city sure knows how to roll up the welcome mat " that is, if you happen to move here from California. Just consider last week's mayoral election. It was the most competitive race in recent memory, a referendum on growth in the rapidly expanding capital of Idaho. And candidate Wayne Richey ran on a very simple platform: Stop the California invasion.

Oregon said the same thing to would-be residents in the 70s. Population growth makes everything worse. If California hadn't doubled in population since the 70s we would have far fewer problems. The residents don't benefit, but the developers sure do.

pointless?

How about they sold their home to suckers at an incredibly nonsensical price. Moved to a location where they are 5 min from wonderful fishing, 35min from hunting, canoeing, MtnBiking.

You remember ... why they moved to California in the first place, but now with the traffic and regulatory reasons can't do any of those things close by.

Personally speaking here, I moved because it was way to expensive to live in Cali and my husband had family in Idaho. We really enjoy the outdoors and each time we visited it was harder to go home. I make more here, have lower cost of living, there are more activities for my kids to participate in that are outside of school and off electronics, etc. Plus I dont feel like I have to have my hair and nails on point as much here. Do you know how hard it is to go bowling with fake nails? It used to take an hour to drive to work, now it takes 7 minutes from home to office.

There is something to be said about living in a community that isn't pretentious. Not to mention all of the other benefits you mention.

I hate Michigan winters but I don't want to live in any other state.

Speaking of winter, we got hammered with 8 inches of snow yesterday and tonight temps are going to get down into single digits. This is extreme for early November, even in Michigan.

We don't bowl anymore in California.

RoC: Futurama was torn down, and recently they tore down a bowling alley off Kiely. ....

Exactly.

JEFF

It's 87 degrees here in S. Florida . . . sparkling pools, balmy ocean breeze and gently waving palms right outside my window.

And best of all . . . NO SNOW.

Twin,

S Florida is beautiful this time of year.

We have friends who live in Florida. They absolutely love northern Michigan during summer. They don't visit during winter.

That's a bummer, I used to go with friends to an alley near Eastridge but bowling wasn't very popular in Silicon Valley even in the 70's and 80's.

No bowling is a bummer for sure. We have two locally, and one even has an arcade, putt putt golf course out back, and a small casino room with bar. You wouldnt find that in the center of any California town I am sure.

It's pretty odd that when defending unjust state laws, conservatives always throw out the unrealistic "just move if you don't like it" suggestion, and then when people actually pick up and do that they complain about that too.

If people in Boise don't like -------- they are free to move to Coeur d'Alene or whatever nazi strongholds they have in mind.

I was born in Idaho...to parents who had fled from California in the 1970s. Since then, a large part of my extended family has moved from California to Idaho, with even more threatening to do so.

...and they more than the others are the ones complaining about the influx of Californians. Including my sister, who has only been in Boise for ten years.

Idaho, whine to the Nez Perce. Any white population complaining about an invasion by outsiders needs to buy a history book and read it.

That invasion is from white Californians, so your attempt to make it sound racist is moronic.

Some people in Idaho don't like others moving to their state, the Native Americans who were there first probably did like the white people moving into their land either but in America we have the right to move where we want to move. Here in Florida, I'll guarantee you that we've been invaded by millions of people but we never thought we could tell them they cant come here.

"Here in Florida, I'll guarantee you that we've been invaded by millions of people but we never thought we could tell them they cant come here."

Yeah, you can't. Many if not most people moving to Florida or minorities. You can't publicly criticize those people for moving there unless you're comfortable with being branded a racist

In Boise, it's different. Their publicly criticizing white people for moving there and that's OK.

Californians have been migrating to lots of places. Denver has seen it for the last 25 years, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and Washington, etc. even Texas.

When I was young it seemed like every old person in NY had moved down here.

We used to have a bumper sticker that said "when I get old I'm going to move to NY and drive real slow."
