Chris Cillizza: Former US Special Envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker was widely seen as Republicans' impeachment ace in the hole. On Tuesday on Capitol Hill, it didn't work out that way.

Among the key changes Volker made to his original testimony:

*He acknowledged that he lacked a full understanding of the fact that many people involved in the Trump administration's push for an investigation into an Ukrainian natural gas company on whose board Joe Biden's son, Hunter sat, viewed that pressure campaign as synonymous with a call to investigate the Bidens.

"I now understand that others saw the idea of investigating possible corruption involving the Ukrainian company, 'Burisma' as equivalent to investigating former Vice President Biden," said Volker. "I saw them as very different. The former being appropriate and unremarkable, the latter being unacceptable."

*Volker initially said that investigations into Trump's conspiracy theories and the release of almost $400 million in military aid for Ukraine were not mentioned in a July 10 meeting at the White House. But on Tuesday, Volker said he now knows that the investigations were mentioned.

*Volker said in his October testimony that any conversations with the Ukrainians about making an announcement on the opening of an investigation into the Bidens had ended in August. But on Tuesday, Volker acknowledged that US Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland had told a top Ukrainian official on September 1 that he believed the military aid was tied to the announcement of an investigation.

"But taken as a whole, Volker was much, much less than Republicans had hoped he would be. Instead of disrupting the narrative Democrats are building around the Ukraine pressure campaign, Volker bolstered it."

Much had changed aka the truth came out.

And, as far as I know, ALL of the witnesses have said that there is NOTHING they know of to indicate that Joe Biden did ANYTHING wrong. Even the witnesses that the GOP requested.

None of this matters enough to move the needle on groups' perception of "Trump is corrupt guilty as sin" (when in his life wasn't he?) vs "Trump is trying to expose libs corruption is being hunted and attacked" (Devin Nunes 'proved the conspiracy - where is whistleblower!") vs "My eyes glaze over this policy / political stuff, I have a game to watch and laundry to take care of" ("give us the highlights, the juicy bits"), even with Orange Idiot hurting himself with some groups, like military, attacking honorable and credible witnesses. Nobody cares about Ukraine or "foreign policy" stuff.

If impeachment is only about "policy differences" and "corruption" (aren't they all? remember "Lock her up!"?) it will be easy for Senate to bounce this off.

What will hurt Trump in the eyes of even many of his cultists, and help the federal and states' investigators and prosecutors after he is gone in 2021 - unless Democrats nominate another "Hillary" (i.e., another round of "the Deplorables" vs "the Unaceptable") - will be personal finances and his financial incompetence and corruption - at this point most people still believe that he is some kind of financial wizard and "great negotiator" and is playing some kind of "3D chess" that they can't understand but he does on their behalf so they don't have to - even as all evidence shows that he has never been anything than a con man and money launderer.

Follow the money! That's the thing that he is most afraid of, to be stripped of his cultivated image / "persona" and exposed as a fraud and con man. Follow the money! Now more than ever!

Hey Maverick, you loser, Sondland is/was Trump's friend and confidante. They had each other on speed dial on their cell phones for God's sake. He should have been the Republicans' witness. Instead, he told the truth and buried all you losers.

"umm, the Republicans are not allowed to call a witness"

That's not true. There's a whole list of witnesses they could call ~~ Mulvaney, Giuliani, Pompeo, Barr . . . if they wanted the truth to come out.

Maybe that "Oath" thing was a bit too much for them. A lot of Trump's people seem to have a problem with that.

I wouldn't be so flippant.

What we're seeing is the depths of corruption that the GOP will stomach so long as it's their guy.

For the other guy...

Grey suit? Grey Poupon mustard? What an unAmerican -------.

Military exercises in Texas and New Mexico? An "invasion" of his own country!

Passing a law to make healthcare more accessible to the populace? HE'S RUINING OUR COUNTRY!

Their guy...

Conduct shadow diplomacy in an attempt to leverage US resources and foreign policy for your own political gain? Meh. It's nothing if it was true but it's not true because everybody who says so is simply against our perfect, bestest eva! dear leader Trump! Even when they supported him enough to be appointed by him! Those sneaky dems...

I don't see it as popcorn worthy at all.

#9 - Cutiepie's plan to beat the con by following the money sounds like a classic winner. I'm enjoying imagining an endless line of witnesses telling how they were cheated, bilked, and defrauded out of their money, people from construction contractors to casino waitresses, renters, buyers, and prospects who were lied to, bankers who have had to write off countless millions lost, unhappy golfers, ad infinitum. And we don't have to have the tax returns.

Maybe you can let me have yours then? Mine is running out.

This being my third impeachment hearing I find this whole spectacle quite exciting! The amount of direct data input from the inner workings of our government is actually overwhelming and difficult to absorb. I have to watch the hear song over and over and I catch new details and insights every time.

Don't you?

Can you believe it? And each one more, ummm, interesting.

Perhaps you do not yet feel the significance of what we are getting to witness.

I stand with Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman.

You don't have to be afraid to tell the truth here.

This is the United States of America.

And I still have faith in America.

Even if you don't.

Yeah. Because they have no witnesses that provide exculpatory evidence (that means you have anything that shows your innocence).

Please inform me, which witnesses have they asked for that have "firsthand knowledge" of the quid pro quo or the reasoning behind it?

Drumpf:
Listen to Sondland, a very good man, who I have heard a lot of good things about...[Sondland testifies...]

I don't know him. He seems like a good guy, but frankly, I've hardly ever heard of him.

Russiapublicans on the committee: All these "star witnesses" are called by the "Democrat" Party. Hearsay! No first hand knowledge.

Russiapublican witnesses: We were on the phone call and there was a QPQ. Yeah, pretty much the whole team was in on it, knew about it and understood it for what it was.

Russiapublicans on the committee: See, the Never Drumpfer Democrat partisan witnesses aren't willing to talk about their knowledge of the pizza basement. Q. E. D.

DR righties: The president said no QPQ, he even wrote it in sharpie on his notes for his yellicopter session, so this is all a hoax.

Also DR righties: Fox "news" has the highest ratings and dominates liberal media outlets. The MSM (which, I guess does not include the highest, most watched network, according to DR righties) is not telling the REAL story about the pizza basement sex ring. Biden! Burisma! No Quid Pro Quo!

"The republicans never called a witness"

Team R witnesses:
David Hale - testified
Tim Morrison - testified
Kurt Volker - testified

The disassociation from reality is nearly complete. We can't have any meaningful conversations here anymore because not-liberals are completely delusional.

He thinks that the only "republican" witnesses are ones that help (or at least don't hurt) Trump's position. But ALL of the witnesses ultimately ended up damaging Trump, so OBVIOUSLY they are not "republican" witnesses according to conservative "logic".

For reference, these are the witnesses requested by Nunes...

Devon Archer
Hunter Biden
Alexandra Chalupa
David Hale
Tim Morrison
Nellie Ohr
Kurt Volker
The "anonymous whistleblower"
"All individuals relied upon by the whistleblower"

Notice that the three that could possibly have ANY "firsthand knowledge" of the quid pro quo WERE called as witnesses.

I also notice they have no interest in calling any of Trump top aides that he has ordered to not testify.

The House (R)s, ESPECIALLY Nunes, are complicit in this cover-up.

So... from what I have read, once this goes as an impeachment trial in the Senate then they could agree not to allow witnesses. But, I am sure that the "managers" (prosecutors) will request/demand it. So, McConnell will allow the Senate to be seen as the farse it is by not allowing ANY witnesses to be called by the "prosecution", or the "prosecution" will request that the Senate subpoena those very same White House aides that refuse to testify in the House.

How do you think McConnell will feel about permanently weakening the powers of the Senate (by setting the precedent that it cannot compel witnesses from the White House to testify in an impeachment trial) in order to protect Trump? Because that is what his legacy will become if he allows it to happen (and it seems McConnell cares A LOT about his legacy).

I'm not so sure Republicans are concerned about legacy (for party or individually) anymore. They sure as hell are acting as though nobody is paying attention and NONE of this will be written down for consideration in history books; especially in the States in which they reside where history books are basically Right Wing propaganda.
