Hong Kong's opposition pro-democracy movement has made strong gains in the Chinese territory's district council elections, local media reports say. It took 196 of the first 235 seats declared, according to the South China Morning Post newspaper. Pro-Beijing candidates took just 27.

China needs to make a tough choice here. If they do crush the pro-democracy movement in HK they risk killing the goose that is laying golden eggs. HK is an economic powerhouse. Does China really intend to attempt a Tianemen Square type crack down on one of the biggest, if not the biggest, financial engine in the country?
