Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot fired Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson Monday, saying Johnson lied about an October incident in which he was found sleeping in his car after supposedly having drinks with dinner. "It has become clear that Mr. Johnson engaged in a series of actions that are intolerable for any leader in a position of trust, particularly the head of the Chicago Police Department," she said in a news conference. It is now clear, the mayor said, that Johnson was lying about the incident. Citing the city inspector general's report about the incident, Lightfoot said Johnson misled the public and lied to her on multiple occasions. A passerby called 911 to report Johnson was sleeping in his car at a stop sign early October 17, and he drove himself home after officers responded and determined he was not impaired.

He claimed "medication related symptom" caused him unexpected drowsiness. He claimed proper police protocols were applied.

IG report discovered he had fallen asleep at the stop sigh in his CPD vehicle. When the first cops showed up, the extent of the interaction was that he simply rolled down the window and showed his Police Commissioner Badge, and was told he was free to leave. Official police report claimed the attending cops 'Saw no indications that he was impaired'.

Video evidence showed him drinking for several hours at a restaurant with a woman 'who was not his wife'.

The Mayor reports he directly lied to her in their closed door interview about the incident, even as she challenged his answers in that interview.

When the IG report became available, and the Mayor read it's findings, she immediately fired the Commissioner.

Well done Mayor Lightfoot. You defended the police and the Commissioner, based on initial reporting, then immediately fired him when you discovered the police report was not accurate, and that 'the old Chicago way' was at work. Thank you for your commitment to ethical Police reform.
