A measles outbreak in Samoa has killed 53 people since late October, including 50 children, the Samoan government reported today (December 2). Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has announced a government shutdown from December 5"6 in order to allow all government workers to assist with a mass vaccination campaign.

Measles outbreak spurred by anti-vaxxers shuts down Samoan government

...In response, officials there have closed schools, barred children from public gatherings, and begun an intensive vaccination campaign. Since November, the government has reported vaccinating over 58,000 people.

But officials have their work cut out for them. The World Health Organization and UNICEF estimated that Samoa's measles vaccination rate for infants was just 31% in 2018. That's down from about 60% to 70% in earlier years and a high of 90% in 2013.

The drop may be partly explained by the tragic deaths of two infants in July 2018, according to the WHO. The infants died on the same day at the same hospital, shortly after they had each received what was supposed to be an MMR vaccine (which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella).

While some quickly blamed the vaccine itself, officials later determined that two nurses had improperly prepared the immunizations. Investigators found that they had mixed in a lethal dose of muscle relaxant, and one of the nurses tried to cover up the error by taking the empty bottle of the muscle relaxant home after retrieving it from the garbage. The two faced charges of manslaughter and were both sentenced to five years in prison in August of this year....

So the anti-vaxxers once again rely upon misinformation to propagate their infant-killing propaganda.

The article doesn't mention anything about anti-vaxxers or vaccine opponents.

See Lamp's post.

There's nothing in Lamp's post about it either. The closest thing that comes to it is "some quickly blamed the vaccine itself", but that was before the malpractice was uncovered. Under the circumstances, even the grieving parents could have thought the vaccine caused it, at first. That hardly makes them anti-vaxxers.

Maybe there is more in the link he provided, but for some reason he chose not to quote that part of it.

The common thread here is acting on emotion rather than evidence. This generally produces bad results. Which rumor caused them not to vaccinate their kids doesn't seem to be relevant.

These outbreaks always, and I mean ALWAYS, occur in areas where the parents are convinced they're smarter than the career scientists.

A tragedy happened. People inevitably react on emotion in such circumstances. One of the concerns many people have about vaccines isn't about the vaccine itself but what's being mixed with it, whether it's by the pharmaceutical companies or by incompetent healthcare workers. It sounds like many parents in Samoa lost faith in the healthcare system after that tragedy occurred. The pendulum will probably swing back after the current tragedy, because of emotion. Such is human nature.

"That hardly makes them anti-vaxxers"

--------.
Refusing vaccines for your kids makes you an anti-vaxxer.

So if I show up at your house with Dr. Kervorkian, and you refuse to let us vaccinate your kids, that makes you an anti-vaxxer?

That's what you're implying here.

No, but if you refuse to vax your kids, and my kids get sick from your kids, despite my kids getting vaxxed, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.

I'm not a professional health care worker, so it would be irresponsible for me to vaccinate my own kids. Dr. Kervorkian isn't much help, because he's dead.

Anti vaxxers should not be allowed out in public. They should be forced to stay at home.
