Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

As of December, the U.S. economy has expanded for a record 126 straight months, the longest time period in the country's history according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. Put another way, the U.S. has avoided a recession for an entire calendar decade for the first time ever.

Since Roosevelt, the free market has been managed by government and the Federal Reserve. So if you want to give credit to government when times are good. Be sure to hold government accountable when times get bad.

While I agree most people give WAY too much credit or discredit for economic issues to a POTUS.

However, saying they have zero effect is equally as bad.

When people and businesses start defaulting on their debts en masse, there isn't a think government can do.

If you remember after the 2008-2009 downturn, authorities were saying, "nobody saw it coming."

That's an admission they don't know what they are doing. I know they don't know what they are doing. To keep pushing credit is the worst thing imaginable.
Eventually, there has to be a reckoning.

#18 | Posted by Ray at 2019-12-24 12:42 PM | Reply

Of course they can't stop market momentum, especially when it's a spiral.

They certainly can blunt growth or create conditions for a spiral.

Which is what we saw culminate in 2008.

"Americans could elect a president from a name in the phone book. Would have no effect on the economy."

What a riot: the guy who admits he doesn't know the first thing about markets wants to tell everyone how markets work.

"When people and businesses start defaulting on their debts en masse, there isn't a think government can do. "

Ray, you don't have to keep proving you don't know a damn thing. For most folks, predicting gloom and doom every year for a decade without a recession would tell them someone else knows something they don't. Not you: being wrong every year for a decade is simply proof in your mind you're right! Just like you're proud of the fact you've lost money, while others have tripled theirs.

Here's a hint: the only time it's GOOD for assets to be lower today than 8 years ago is when you're NOT holding them.

"Eventually, there has to be a reckoning."

And "eventually", California will fall into the ocean, but if you stand on Venice Beach every day for the next 9,000 years with your "THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END" sandwich board, you're the idiot.

That means you need to increase your payment expectations and that is a good thing. The Fed tells you that rising wages are a sign of coming inflation so they need to tap the brakes on economic expansion and import a bunch of illegals to depress wages. That is the worst possible thing you can do the working class in the world, which is why wage gains have evaporated since the 1980's. Rising wages is a good thing - it forces innovation to increase productivity. Depressed wages just encourages you to move your operations to a lower wage area as you have not invested in PPE.
