Trump was wrong, Obama paid him off to appease him with pallets of cash .... now they are building the bomb and attacking us.

Obama kicked the can down the road ... like most things in his administration ....

When terrorists attacked a U.S. diplomatic outpost and murdered four Americans in Libya, Obama responded by lying about what happened and arresting a YouTuber. When terrorists attacked the U.S. embassy in Iraq, Trump turned the men responsible into pink dust.

So my medium take is the doctrine of unintended consequences is a cruel mistress, Iran gets a vote in what happens next, and impulse is not a strategy.

Soleimani was an unequivocally evil actor and this feels like a beginning, not an end. Killing bin Laden crippled Al-Qaeda almost terminally, but as I said, Iran gets a vote and they're likely to act out hard.

Following the United States attack on the Baghdad International Airport on Thursday evening, a strike which killed seven people, including Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and two top Iraqi members of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), it is now being reported that US Marines carried out arrest raids inside Baghdad, capturing high ranking Iraqi MP Hadi al-Amiri and militia leader Qais al-Khazali.

So, not only is America dropping bombs on Iraq, we are kidnapping it's citizens.

Iraq is one of many friction points between Iran and the US. Syria, the Gulf, Palestine being others.

We broke Iraq and Iran flowed in. Only natural given the geography, culture and history.

Instead of diplomacy we tried under Obama, we are back to bellicosity with the orange ---- stain at the helm.

We bomb Iranian backed Iraqi militias, they fire rockets back, they assault our embassy, we blow up an Iranian general and kidnap an Iraqi minister.

This is piss poor middle east policy at work.

Hopefully cooler heads will prevail in DC, Tehran and Baghdad, but I doubt it.

I doubt Iran OFFICIALLY has troops in Iraq, but it is nave to think that the Iranian and Iraqi governments don't coordinate closely on military and militia affairs.

To expect Iraq to be anti-Iran at this point is, well, delusional. We destroyed the Sunni minority that ruled the country. The country is now Shiite majority ruled, with numerous warlords and militias. Many of THOSE bodies are closely aligned with Iran.

Probably shouldn't have invaded in 2003, but, hey I didn't support that soo... ... ... ... ... .

So the General was there at the request of Iraq and we murdered him?

Well at least we have successfully reunited Iran and Iraq after they were bitter enemies. We have apparently united them against us. And we will finally be able (forced) to leave.

Interesting editorial on recent events in Iraq

responsiblestatecraft.org

If there has been Iranian orchestration behind any of this " including the rocket attack on the Iraqi naval base last week " it would have been a calculated attempt to provoke just the sort of unpopular U.S. response that in fact occurred, thereby taking the focus of angry Iraqi citizens away from Iran and redirecting it toward the United States.

An article detailing recent events, with important background/history (for those that care about what is actually happening)

original.antiwar.com

It's a new year, and the U.S. has found a new enemy " an Iraqi militia called Kata'ib Hezbollah. How tragically predictable was that? So who or what is Kata'ib Hezbollah? Why are US forces attacking it? And where will this lead?

Basically Kataib Hezbollah, is an Iraqi sanctioned militia that has been fighting ISIS and apparently are funded by Iran. Israel attacked them (likely with US complicity) and then in response attacks were carried out against US forces, contractors and the embassy culminating with the death of a US contractor on 12/27. The US responded with attacks against Kataib Hezbollah killing around 25 and wounding 55, resulting in the attack on the US embassy.

One important issue is our continued deployment of troops in Iraq. They were there to fight ISIS. now that ISIS is defeated (or more appropriately morphed), why are we still there? The mission seems to be creeping to combating Iranian influence.

What a delightful web of confusion.

According to the people who blew him up?

Ok, lets assume for a second the statement is correct. What effect will his death have?

Will it not ignite further conflict with Iraq over sovereignty issues? Wont Iraq want us out of their country? Why would Iraq want to be a proxy battlefield between the US and Iran? So if that is true, what benefit does his killing give us, you know, security wise?

As if Iraq can allow or not allow anything.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei taunted President Donald Trump after the U.S. leader's warning that Tehran will be held "fully responsible for lives lost" after the storming of the American embassy in Iraq.

Khamenei said. "Firstly, You can't do anything"

That aged well.

Trump just killed Iran's most famous general who was the second most powerful man in Iran. He was head of the Iranian revolutionary guard which has been designated as a terrorist organization by the US. The US killed Iran's chief terrorist.

I wonder how Khamenei feels about "Firstly, You can't do anything" now?

How does a president who distrusts his own intelligence services wage a war against Iran?

The other side is worse off, that's how.

The only way the general's car could have been targeted like that is if the Iranians had a mole who gave up the general's location.

Iran is full of moles ready to betray their country. That happens when the price of eggs goes up ten times a year.

The last major show of force against Iran (Operation Praying Mantis in 1988) was a total rout of their naval forces and they have done little in the meantime to show any capability (beyond some developments in irregular and cyberwarfare) that could slow a US offensive.

Bakker: If Trump Attacks Iran He Will Have God, Jesus on His Side

Televangelist Jim Bakker claims Christians are in a win-win situation with Trump. He says that God is on Trump's side if he decides to go to war with Iran.

"Evangelicals can't lose with Trump," said Bakker. "He's the most pro-Christian president in decades. And even if he goes to war with Iran, it is a sign that Jesus Christ will soon come back."

Not really. They're not in the same position as North Korea. NK's artillery wall on the DMZ was there deterrence but it went obsolete. Iran has a credible deterrent in the form of missiles that can close the Persian Gulf. For nukes, most estimates put them at a 6 months time from re-starting enrichment, and we're 13 or 14 months into renewed sanctions at this point. If they test, it destroys their own credibility to the world after spending decades saying it was a peaceful program, and gives Saudi Arabia the justification for their own nuclear program. Iran can't afford that arms race.

"In order to get elected, @BarackObama will start a war with Iran," Trump tweeted in 2011, years before he began his own presidential campaign.
On Thursday, Trump ordered the killing of Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military commander who was one of the most powerful men in the Middle East.
The assassination came with Trump's approval rating mired at 42% and with him facing removal from office through impeachment in a US election year."

To #202 The UK and Russia did help. I was never a big fan of the shah, but I'm not sure the Iranian intellectuals, leftists and moderates supporting revolution knew what they were getting into when they assisted Khomeini and a theocracy to come to power. I reckon a bunch of them thought they might get more Western-type standard of living and less repression. Silly Persians.

In the end the US did not abandon its diplomatic posts in Iran until the hostage crisis which ended on the eve of Reagan. That was probably a good move on Khomeini's part as the CIA would have done their best to undermine him with diplomatic protection available.

Maybe things will get worse or maybe things will not. In any event, the kid gloves are off. At least we're being honest about it.

Yep. True.

Soleimani was a significant player in the campaign that toppled ISIS on the western side of the Euphrates...and in many other areas.

A lot of Iraqis, particularly in the western side of the country, were at the very least empathetic to ISIS. Maybe they're responding to the death of Soleimani in the way that those in opposition to ISIS celebrated the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

I think the biggest beneficiary here will be ISIS. As of now, they potentially have a lot more room to maneuver.

Arguably the best SAM system the Iranians have is the Russian S-10. Israel demonstrated how to electronically defeat them. The F-22 and F-35 can engage those with impunity. Russia still sells them but they're up to the S-400 to attempt to keep up in the arms race. The idea is to shoot at the incoming bombs, because the engagement window on stealth fighters is so incredibly narrow.

Reports coming in suggest the US has struck a convoy carrying senior PMF officials. There's been a tectonic shift in US policy it seems - and if Iran's going to avenge Soleimani's death anyway then the US may now see no reason *not* to go after Iraq's most powerful militia heads.

Confirmed. What's becoming apparent is that the US is no longer carrying out ad-hoc attacks on militia groups in Iraq. What we may be witnessing is an intensified US *campaign* of airstrikes designed to undermine, contain and paralyse Iran's proxy network in Iraq.

Reuters: Air strikes target Iraqi militia convoy north of Baghdad, killing six people. Hamid al-Jazaeri, Deputy Leader of Saraya Khurasani has been killed. Huge.

The U.S. disbanded the Iraqi military after our preemptive invasion that took out Iran's primary adversary. 400-500,000 men were left without a job. Something the first Provisional Iraqi Government head Gen. Jake Garner vehemently objected to for exactly the reasons that transpired after that move.

Iran-backed Shia militia in Iraq resisted the American invasion and occupation of Iraq. It's true, these Shia militia organized and backed by Soleimani probably killed American troops, but there was a war going on in Iraq. A war WE started.

If we want to label Soleimani as "bloody-handed" what does that make Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice and Powell? They were responsible for thousands of times as many deaths as Soleimani.

The consequences of the massive blunder that was the invasion of Iraq continue ...

"You'll support any war Donald Trump starts.
Any. War."

You know that's true when these cultists start talking about Civil War. In other words they are willing to kill Americans to further their own political goals. Once you start saying Civil War is an acceptable way for America to settle disputes there is no walking it back.

It's the ultimate in irresponsible, Anti-American political statements.

Just as I suspected, DR Libs doing everything they can to denounce Trump while still trying to not openly support Iran. Obama already showed the country that Dems support Iran and are willing to give millions in aid to them at any time, so it's no use trying to pretend just to keep up a facade.

DR libs are opposed to unnecessary wars. Trump has just made that more likely than not.

Obama didn't give a nickel to Iran that was their own money, released as compliance to the nuclear accord was verified. They were in compliance.

Now, Trump and Netanyahu, desperate to be reelected, have chosen the unnecessary path towards conflict.

I posted this on another thread related to this issue...

Iran isn't suicidal.

They are dealing with major strife within their own borders. There is no way the mullahs will entertain the notion of going to war with the US.

The question is, how will they respond to this? I don't think they have the ability to escalate their proxies much beyond their current activity levels, and it should be clear that any overt actions will be met with a disproportionate response.

Yes the nation that agreed to and abided by the nuclear deal which Trump cancelled simply because it was an accomplishment of Obama. F Trump and his attempt to gin up war for no valid reason. OK, I'm ready, start calling me a traitor like y'all did back when Bush wanted to invade Iraq. That's fine, we're looking at an even worse outcome with Iran.

"Iran isn't suicidal."

But they also can't afford to appear weak.

Why are those on the right so eager to start WWIII? How does that comport with their isolationist, non-interventionist rhetoric? How is blowing up the Middle East in the interests of the US? Do any of you consider what Russia's response might be to an American attack on Iran?

Some of you don't understand that most of these countries would kill us as fast as they can. We need to go over there and physically and mentally break them by any means necessary. Once Bush started the win hearts and minds speech I knew we were in for a lost cause. We need them not to respect us but fear us so much they tremble at the sound of our name.

"General Suleimani, who was considered the most important person in Iran after Ayatollah Khamenei, was a commanding general of a sovereign government. The last time the United States killed a major military leader in a foreign country was during World War II, when the American military shot down the plane carrying the Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto."
