It's called the Gang of Eight. On matters of highly sensitive intelligence, eight congressional leaders - the top two members from each chamber and the Intelligence Committees -- are supposed to receive special briefings and notifications, which are shared with no other lawmakers.

The process is more than just a courtesy between branches of government: the Gang of Eight briefings are an important oversight step, required by statute, ensuring a level of accountability on matters of national security.

We're apparently moving away from the Gang of Eight reporting process and toward a process in which the president notifies an allied senator about national security decisions while sharing a tee time.

If this sounds at all familiar, Trump also kept the Gang of Eight in the dark on the mission targeting Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the founder and leader of ISIS, a few months ago. The president did alert Lindsey Graham " who is not a member of the Gang of Eight and whose Senate responsibilities do not require notifications like these.

This isn't how any of this is supposed to work in this country, though clearly Trump doesn't care. What's less clear is what might happen in the future " because the funny thing about norms, institutions, and respect for the rule of law is that once they're broken, they're awfully tough to piece back together.

I've yet to see anyone mention how Trump's unilateral actions sidelining the Gang of Eight are directly related to his impeachment and his insistence that he alone retains almost unfettered power to be wielded as he sees fit based on nothing more than his own whims and beliefs dominating his decision-making in that moment.

Don't get this twisted, the ask here isn't for a veto over Trump's decisions, it's for recognition that the entirety of government (including US military and US citizens currently located in foreign nations) can be affected by his decisions and the repercussions arising from them. Trump is telling Congress that they have no authority and deserve no deference from him unless he decides to give them some.

The unitary executive has morphed into the "sole authority" while the GOP stands idly by, waving the pom-poms of Congress' innate fecklessness.

Citizens for Ethics @CREWcrew

We don't know who has access to the president at Mar-a-Lago. We don't know who he's meeting with or what he's discussing. It's terrifying to have to question whether any of Trump's paying customers knew more about the killing of an Iranian general than Members of Congress did.

Did Trump consult with Putin before killing the General?

It's disturbing that major decisions are being made by a small handful of people (for whom unquestioning loyalty is the highest qualification) whole playing golf at DOTUS' private club.

And the supposed "patriots" love it.

Uh oh, Pooty Poot's sock puppet is calling out Trump's dunsel, Pompeo.

You gotta wonder exactly WHAT Trump has on Lindsay Gayham. I have no idea what it could be but it sure is a ----- set of behaviors that senator has.

Whatever Trump has on Graham... it's probably a Dennis Hastert Level Event.

While Trump may have failed to inform the 'Gang of Eight' about the upcoming drone attack on a high-level Iranian military leader, he may have told his son Eric about it, who then went out and posted a taunt on Twitter which appears to allude to some sort of impending action by the United States. Can you imagine the outrage that there would have been if one of the Obama daughters had made a public comment about a potential raid on Osama Bin Laden?

It sounds like this was authorized in advance. Just waiting for the right opportunity. Goodbye and good riddance.

Other leaders better not upset me
Or I'll send a million troops to die at war
To all you Republicans, that helped me win
I sincerely like to thank you
'Cause now I got the world swingin' from my nuts
And damn it feels good to be a gangsta

IMPOTUS is acting as a dictator, eschewing oversight of any kind, appointing only sycophants and yes-men at all levels of government including his cabinet (SOS, AG, SOD) who will commit crimes on his behalf and cover up his crimes for him. This is where we saw ourselves going, and now we are here. He is now prosecuting an illegal war. This is how democracy dies. When President Obama took out Bin Laden he consulted the Gang of Eight, even though Moscow Mitch was fighting him at every turn and stated publicly that his goal was to make President Obama a one-term president. There are no two-sides here, no "Obama did it," this is new and should be frightening to EVERYBODY who loves this country and what it has stood for since its founding.

Trump Told Mar-a-Lago Pals to Expect Big' Iran Action Soon'

In the five days prior to launching a strike that killed Iran's most important military leader, Donald Trump roamed the halls of Mar-a-Lago, his private resort in Florida, and started dropping hints to close associates and club-goers that something huge was coming.
