Before dawn on Tuesday, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office descended on a residential block in West Oakland with armored vehicles, guns drawn.

A similar situation happened in New Orleans a couple of years after Katrina. As investors began to buy and flip properties it made many neighborhoods unaffordable for its previous owners/renters. Only thing I don't remember about the situation was militarized police doing the evicting.

Wouldn't they be better off pooling their resources and rent a house together, instead of criminally squatting on private property in a house they didn't pay a penny to illegally possess? What on earth makes people believe they should be given free housing, and when it doesn't come fast enough, they have a right to seize property and occupy it?

Further, why are people coming out and blocking the police, demanding they be allowed to stay? WTF is going on in peoples heads?

Close your legs and stop dropping babies. Go get a job. Pay for what you can afford.

I get the position of these people. I also get your position in all honesty.

The problem with housing costs as I see it is speculators/investors (individual and corporate) flush with cash and nowhere better to put it. They are the ones driving up housing costs. So they are right about that.

The thing is these moms are the working poor. I agree about personal responsibility from the point of don't have kids if you can't afford them but you are also arguing from the side of the aisle that says no abortions and breed. I will also say if you are waiting until you can "afford" kids the window will likely pass virtually everyone by. It kills me how many "conservatives" I work with that are on food stamps and breeding like fools and decrying welfare at the same time.

Frankly this is a failure of the state for not getting in the game of rent control much like NYC much much earlier. NYC has known for several decades they had to do it. Otherwise you end up with the exact issues California is having. Not everyone is making 6 figures and you NEED the people who aren't to do jobs. You aren't going to pay a cashier, daycare worker, warehouse worker, sales associate or janitor 100+k are you? No. They need to be able to afford to live and work in the area they work. Bottom line is you need the state to do something in these instances. Affordable Housing in CA in general is an oxymoron. Believe it or not it is nauseating to even have to say the state needs to do things like this but it is pretty much the only way this problem is manageable. At least nobody has come up with another yet...

All that empty space I occupy between your ears. What a sad life you live.

But hey. You know what. You can go to sleep tonight knowing these women were kicked out of the house. The kids living there don't have a house to live in anymore. You are a better person than they are because you're better at capitalism than they were.

It's okay tax dollars were spent to mobilize a small army to evict women and children. That's why you pay your taxes, right? So the rich can toss people into the streets.

Did you read the article at all? Everything in your #4 is slander and bullshht. The women living there had jobs. The kids attended schools. They tried to buy the house. But the company that owned it didn't want to sell it to them. They preferred to send in an army, at 5am, to drag them out of the house.

Go find your humanity. Go find empathy for other human beings.

Or don't. Perhaps you need other people to live a shhty life. So, by comparison, you can feel better about your own.

You've missed the point. The owner had already benefitted from the operation of legal process. From the article:

"In December, Moms 4 Housing filed a right of possession claim to the house, but on Friday a judge ruled against them and ordered the sheriff's office to evict them."

The County Sheriff's office was there to enforce the eviction order, so the question is simple: was it appropriate for the police to turn up in significant numbers, some kitted out in military style uniforms and heavily armed, supported by armored vehicles, to evict women who as far as I can tell, had not exhibited violence during the period of their occupation?

I'll go first: no.

They were living in an abandoned house owned by a flipping company.

Over 300 people got together to raise money and the owning company was approached to discuss selling the house. Which the company refused because they wanted more money.

Here's the sad part of threads like this. Are there people looking to take advantage of a situation? of course there are. I see It all the time. They're also usually the ones feeding off their families over and over. Are there people who truly can't get a leg up? absolutely. I remember a time when My second son was born and I was in school/working at the same time and my parents "LOANED" me money to get through '90-'92 recession times (which I later paid back in full) Those times were hard in oil and gas but with my parents help and opportunity I somehow managed to get through it. Not everyone has that contingency plan. I could have very well became homeless if it weren't for my parents.. What made me special enough to have that backup plan? Nothing really. Just a stroke of luck.

The rich get bailed out all the time.. be it tax breaks or initiatives to see that they don't fail.. Maybe gifts from our government that we as tax payers fund. No matter how you look at it, I didn't become a dependent of the state, I borrowed from Mom and Dad and paid it back. The rich never pay it back. People like myself and some of you pulled ourselves up by our boot straps and people funded their stupid, greedy decisions. maybe lighten up on others who made a bad decision or two.It hasn't cost nearly as much as the phone wars or bank bailouts - or auto mfgers.

I never accused you of not living up to my standard. I accused you of not living up to yours.

Let's recap:

You think it's OK for squatters to live in a home they don't own.
You are not willing to let squatters live in the home you own.

Is this accurate? Of course it is A simple PGUP proves it.

That being the case, you are a hypocrite. You are willing to allow squatters to live in someone else's house, but not your own.

Own it. Wait, you already did. The later posts are you just pretending you never said the things you did, accusing using strawmen, name calling, condescension, avoiding questions, and more in hopes it will mask your double standards. Guess what? It doesn't. It's too late for that unless you can get rcade to revise history for you by deleting the tell tale posts.

Better luck next time NIMBY. And again, donate to childsafe if you are as worried about the children as you claim to be. Childsafe doesn't occupy buildings they don't own, so as a charity, it may not be your cup of tea.

"...but I've been through a time when I needed a lift"

I've been there too, brother. My in laws bailed us out once and they had less money than us. Because of that it was important to me we paid them back in the time we promised. Looking back it's funny that what was a monstrous sum then is not that much now. It was about $2000. This was early '80s.

I had a lot of MCI stock (putting too much into ESPP was part of the cause of our financial problems, but I believed in the company. Ended up I was right in the long run, but wrong in the short term) We couldn't pay them back in cash, but I told them I would give them the equivalent in stock or I would cash some in and give them the cash. I convinced them it was a good investment if they held on to it.

It was. MCI's value exploded after Judge Greene's landmark decision breaking up AT&T's monopoly. They held on to the stock and sold it a few years later for at least 15x what it was when I gave it to them.

We all won.

Maybe the money spent on a tank could have been better spent on affordable housing.

Usually these are given to the local PD by the military. That way they can say they need more to justify keeping their budget from going down. God help us if we ever spent less on the bloated military than last year.

"There is nothing happening at 2928 Magnolia St that justifies this level of force."

Sure there is: Funding.

If you can't show a use for your local Law Enforcement Para-Military Squad, you can't support funding for it.

But now we use them for warrants with non-violent criminals, basic drug busts, etc. That's how they justify the cost.

Then when the numbers come in, they can claim they are being used...as long as no one looks too deeply into why when and how they are being used.

Man on meth stole 7 trucks, mostly U-Haul pickups or vans, camped in them and then torched them during 3-week crime spree - www.oregonlive.com

It's outrageous that U-Haul isn't required to provide all homeless with a truck to sleep in, then torch.

And why should this guy have to spend his own money on meth? Shouldn't there be a safe place to get it for free provided on every corner?

Two issues here:

1) The squatters. No one has a right to anyone else's property. Your personal circumstances are never a justification for stealing. Make no mistake, squatting In a home, is stealing. How can the owner show it for sale with squatters in it? They can't. How can they get a paying tenant inc so they get a return on their investment? They can't. The simple fact that they offered to buy it will after the squatting, in no way changes the dynamic. I wouldn't sell my car to the guy that stole it, any more than I would sell to the squatters. Also, no where in the article does it say they offered to pay fair market value. They could have offered to buy it for a dollar. Or half of what it was worth. No one knows.

2) the police activity. People tend to get cranky and lash out at the police who are only enforcing the law..... They aren't the homeowners. They are a disinterested 3rd party. The question of ownership and squatting are moot. The court says get them out, they have to get them out. They must do so safely. Yes, the mothers were peaceful, but the mob that showed up to try and keep the police out? Yeah, they need to be able to swiftly and safely, control that situation.

Is this a perfect scenario? No way. It's a no win situation, especially for the police.

Whether or not these folks had a right to be in the house is a separate issue than the inappropriate level of force the cops used to evict them.

Republicans would rather spend money on kicking people out on the streets than providing them with houses.

Oakland is very strongly liberal. Alameda county is very strongly liberal. California is very strongly liberal.

it looks like it's the Democrats not the Republicans who want to spend money kicking people out on the streets and not providing them housing

Thank you for playing. Get your concession prize at the door

"Usually these are given to the local PD by the military."

I went to a city fair a few years ago that featured both the Army National Guard and the local police department. The Army stuff was pretty standard-what you would find on any base. The police however, were kitted out with the latest ARs with camoflauge paint and netting, sniper rifles, body armor, etc.

Imagine the cast from Lone Survivor, but 200 pounds overweight. It was kind of embarrassing.

It was reporting in the article that the city had entered into negotiations to buy the property for a non-profit group that helps the homeless. The property owner declined.

I have to think there is more to the story.

There are only a couple of options:

1) the homeowner didn't want to sell to them because they think it might encourage others to squat in their other properties.

2) the offer was ridiculously low.

3) both.
