Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Pearl Harbor Monday, the U.S. Navy is expected to announce that a new aircraft carrier will be named after Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller, the first African American to receive the Navy Cross for valor for his actions on Dec. 7, 1941, when he manned a machine gun on the USS West Virginia to fire back at attacking Japanese planes.

In 1941 an African American was not allowed to man a gun in the Navy, and as far as rank was concerned, "he could not really get above a messman level," [Doreen] Ravenscroft said. Miller's actions started to turn the tide, she added.

In line right after JFK and Enterprise.

Odd time to break tradition, but good on him.

A black man grabs a white man's gun and lives.

It will never happen, but it's a nice PR gimmick.

Thank progressive icon Woodrow Wilson for that. The Navy was integrated before Wilson's Democrats segregated the bulk of the federal workforce, including the Navy.

Good for Doris.

Cooks had/have a thankless job. I always made sure to treat them well. Mainly because they deserved it, but partially because nobody else did and they would hook me up.

Hopefully the new aircraft carrier doesn't get repo'd.

As soon as Drumpf learns the carrier is being named after a black man, he'll have the Navy pull a Harriet Tubman and then court marshal Doris Miller in absentia. Then he'll insist the Navy name the carrier the USS Donald Jenius Trump because he supposedly "rebuilt the military.

Breathtakingly parsed view of who Wilson was:

"Wilson's earliest memory was of playing in his yard and standing near the front gate of the Augusta parsonage at the age of three, when he heard a passerby announce in disgust that Abraham Lincoln had been elected and that a war was coming.By 1861, both of Wilson's parents had come to fully identify with the Southern United States and they supported the Confederacy during the American Civil War."

Tradition was broken when the ship I was on was named. It was the first one to be named after a non-American. The USS Harold Holt (FF 1082) was named after that Australian PM who disappeared mysteriously while walking an Australian beach one night.

Rules are made to be broken, even by the Navy

How sad you have to drag your TDS and hate into a very positive thread honoring an American hero. Besides, ships are named under the direction of the president, Compernicus. Now take your hate and TDS to another thread.

The vessels of the Navy shall be named by the Secretary of the Navy under direction of the President according to the following rule: Sailing-vessels of the first class shall be named after the States of the Union, those of the second class after the rivers, those of the third class after the principal cities and towns and those of the fourth class as the President may direct.

Title Thirteen, Chapter Six, Section 1531 of the United States Code,

Yes, and Harry Truman, by executive order, did away with segregation in the military. This was a turning point in the Democratic party's move away from the old post Civil War view of the party. It took years to overcome a hundred years of 'tradition' but it was finally complete under Lyndon Johnson with the civil rights movement. However, Ronald Reagan opened the doors of the Republican party to the old white Democrats, particularly those living in Southern states, when he ran for office in 1980 under a campaign centered around his so-called 'Southern Strategy' which welcomed racist-leaning Americans into the party of Lincoln. Trump has simply taken this to its logical conclusion where being a White Supremacist is no longer something that people need to hide from their friends and family.

Thank you. I was wondering if anybody was thinking the same thing I was.

Glad to read that new ships may be named after those who committed incredible acts of courage rather than presidents with a tenuous pre-Presidential military connection

Only people too stupid to know how ships are named and are so consumed with TDS they even resort to making stuff up. Again.

Don't get too comfortable. The Navy just gave Trump a new brain fart.

You still can't give Trump credit for the naming of this carrier. Even after -------- on him with some imagined scenario gunslinger dreamed up.

Is TDS as painful as it appears? I can't imagine my mind being controlled by a jerk like Trump as yours obviously is. Damn.

And don't pretend you aren't reading this. Your "I plonked you, goatman" lie was exposed last week.

#7 Sounds like you're making an excuse for Wilson's abject racist views and policies.

#10 and you're engaging in a top tier demonstration of whataboutism

Just own it, progressives. One of your icons was a K-K-Klansman.

No, he's educating you on why the "duh Democrats were racists" is an argument used by the intellectually shallow or uninformed.

The dotard and his klansman father would've refused to rent an apartment to Mr. Miller because of the color of his skin. MAGA!!!

Not at all, just pointing out few people can be defined by a one-word phrase.

Despite some of Wilson's progressive initiatives, I think he was poorly suited to be President.

#20 | Posted by SunTzuMeow at 2020-01-20 01:17 PM | Reply

Drumpf has never heard of Doris Miller, and if he has probably thinks he's white woman and that this will help him earn some votes of suburban white women. He damn sure doesn't know the color of Doris Miller's skin or this would not have happened. I'm sure somebody slipped it in with other docs that needed his signature. Diaper Donnie is the most racist occupant of the WH in well over a generation. He is is a racist, surrounds himself with racists, and is supported by white supremacists because the recognize that he is one of them. Again I point to the plans for the Harriet Tubman bill, what happened to that? The Drumpf Regime nixed it, was it because she was black, or a woman, or that she would have replaced Drumpf's racist slave-owning hero Andrew Jackson?

I don,t think there was any defined rules in naming aircraft carriers. Some named after battles, from the revolutionary war,and then world war2.
A couple after predatory insects "Hornet and Wasp. And afterwards presidents and naval secretaries. Good call on the newest name for the CVN, USS Doris Miller.

#22 | Posted by Badcat at 2020-01-21 02:24 AM | Reply

The Secretary of the Navy picks the names. That's it, they can do as they please.

#23 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2020-01-21 07:47 AM | Reply

Carrier naming as Presidents didn't start until the JFK class and continued, mostly, through the Nimitz. There have always been exceptions, including Nimitz, Vinson, and Stennis. The first Gerald R. Ford, which might come see deployment in 2027 if they can debug it, is the Enterprise. Miller would be 3 years after that.

As a Headquarters commander in the 82nd, I had the mess hall in my company. We won best mess hall in the army in 2009. They were also great in theater. Sometimes in combat operations, the commander and 1SG couldnt always get away to eat. They would bring us dinner to the TOC. I especially liked Fridays when we had surf and turf. They would bring us a box full of cooked lobster tails and a plate full of steaks. I made sure they were stocked and their soldiers constantly sent to promotion boards.

Two things you dont mess with when it comes to soldiers...mail and chow. Get those two right and the soldiers will love you.

This is a little off-topic, but the company I work for does some defense work. In particular, we work on various components that go into the motor of the new Columbia class submarines. Very interesting meetings i've sat in on as of lately. Im used to brash oil and gas meetings where we cowboy ---- together.
