Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, January 19, 2020

A portrait of Aatika and Zahraw Shah wearing hijabs was displayed on the side of an empty building in downtown Newnan. The sisters were born in Georgia and had lived in Newnan since 2012, after they moved from Athens, Ga. They attended a local high school in the county. Their father, an engineer, moved to the United States from Pakistan, as did their mother. The reaction to their portrait was fast and intense. James Shelnutt was driving through downtown when he saw it. "I feel like Islam is a threat to the American way of life," he said. "There should be no positive portrayals of it."

The reaction in that town would have probably been the same if it had been a picture of a couple of Orthodox Jews wearing yarmulkes and wrapped in a prayer shawl.

I don't think that the Georgia town is freaking out over the photos as much as it's freaking out over looking into a mirror.
That mirror isn't literally in photos as much as it is in the minds of those that look inward as a result of a thought provoking presentation.

In the Trump era, any attempt at informing the public about the benefits of looking inward carries severe penalties. Throughout the Trump presidency those with
intellectual capabilities are villainized (ie: Journalists, Educators and Scientists) because they answer to a higher calling or communicate better with other intellectuals and don't
need a sugardaddy's approval for what they already know about the world that is changing.

I don't know if it's fair to say the town has "freaked out". some individuals not liking it? no surprise there.

But if it gets too much press in places like the NYT then the headline is going change to "Liberals freak out over Georgia Town".

Artist Mary Beth Meehan's large-scale photographs of residents in Newnan have exposed the shifting demographics of the town. A resident, who protested the image of two Muslim schoolgirls in the town square, got more than a thousand responses from others who embrace a more inclusive vision of the town.

A thousand people embrace the murals.

But one person complains and NYT has to run an expose on the "racist town of newnan".

I bet you'd get more complaints in NYC.

No it's not.

Not if you read the article.

It was an initiative to show how the town has changed in the recent past by showing faces of the residents by hanging portraits of residents around town.

And the people who were concerned about being portrayed as rednecks acted like rednecks.

What exactly do you think needs to be answered about it?

I still can't figure out why Jeff thinks those questions are somehow relevant unless it was a terrorist they were posting up or the pictures had writing saying Islam is taking over the city.

Okay. Takes a lot to admit that. I appreciate it.

That said, the article is a bit overblown. I have a hunch a rural town like this might have some loud voices saying racist things but I doubt the entire town feels this way.

I hate it when the news listens to the loudest voices and says the "town" is freaking out when its just a few loudmouths.

It's because Jeff and Goat are friends in real life (family?). So sometimes they simply like to put their necks on the chopping board for on another.

What? You mean the few random tweets and Facebook comments aren't the whole story?!?! CNN will be shocked!

It's no surprise there was an element who acted poorly to it. As I mentioned, that element is largely dying off as the Boomers pass on. Younger generations are far less narrow minded about diversity.

GOATSHART.. The King of Trolls.... almost ruined this thread! Be on your guard and keep your eyes peeled!

Now then:

Right after 9-11, the US govt took out a series of full page ads in all Pakistani english language papers. They showed women wearing hijabs, doing doctor stuff and working as teachers in America and saying how 9-11 was against American-Muslims as well. And there was also one fat brown guy cleaning something (implying he was American Muslim too). Looked like a pimp to me.

Those ads backfired badly and the lady Dubya's people had hired for the campaign was fired.

Probably the same lady behind this too.
