"Somber members of the press offered their thoughts and prayers that someone would start some violence at the gun rights rally in Virginia today.

Reporters expressed their grief and condolences as the violence they hyped has so far failed to materialize.

"Nobody has so much as fired a shot. This is an unbelievable tragedy," said one teary-eyed MSNBC reporter, clearly caught up in the anguish of the moment. "It's tragic that we live in a country where reporters who are just minding their own business trying to push a narrative can have everything ripped away from them in an instant when protesters refuse to shoot at people."

A CBS News reporter called for a moment of silence live on the air. "Let's all take a minute and cry out to a non-specific deity of our choice that any second now, a miraculous shooting would occur." When it did not occur, she began weeping and gnashing her teeth before ripping her suit jacket in despair. "WHY, GOD, WHY!?!"

One CNN reporter has offered up to $1,000 for anyone who will start some violence to help out the narrative."

From the article by Colorblind author Tim Wise:

"I want to think about this for a second. I want us to imagine that a group not of right-wing, white people, but a group of black folks, a group of Latino folks, Muslim folk of whatever color, say, we're going to gather at an American statehouse, maybe in front of Congress, with weapons to protest laws we don't like.' Do we think for one second the president of the United States and other leaders and commentators would go, This is a very bold statement of Constitutional liberty? No. They would be calling it insurrection, terrorism. But, when white folks gather with a bunch of guns and essentially threaten civil war, we go back and say, isn't that funny? Isn't that interesting? We would never respond the same way if these folks were Black or brown, and anyone who is honest knows it."

What if black people showed up holding guns and rifles, forming large crowds? What if they were Mexicans? Arabs? Chinese?

I'm just basing this on my opinion. But republicans and conservatives would freak out. Along with a good number of moderates.

This is what people refer to as white privilege. Being able to walk around in public with an exposed weapon. Without getting shot by the cops.

Protestors from various groups over the years in Texas have carried rifles including the Black Panthers march on Austin to support Open Carry.

From the Dallas police ambush a few years ago... I don't remember anyone saying a word at the time during the demonstration about the protestors carrying rifles.

But then police officers started being shot.

I remember watching the live coverage and saw several protestors with rifles and I wondered if more chaos was about to happen but instead I saw protestors calmly speak with police officers to show they weren't part of the active shooting. The police questioned and released one person but other than that no one went nuts that there were Black Lives Matters protestors carrying rifles.

Some protesters at Thursday night's deadly Black Lives Matter demonstration in Dallas created confusion by legally carrying rifles. A sniper killed five officers. But proponents of the state's open carry laws say no changes are needed.

If black people armed themselves en masse in States like Virginia, Texas and the entire South, we would see the gun-carry laws in those States change so quickly it would make your head spin. Especially if it were young black men between the ages of 18 and 30. Simultaneously, we would see a mad rush from the white law enforcement community to also arrest them and get them convicted of felonies en masse as quickly as possible so as to strip them of their gun rights. Bank on it.

What I put in bold is absolutely absurd. There was a decade+ long stretch where Nulli and I disagreed much of the time. Yet, we managed to not only be mostly civil toward each other during that period of time but actually welcomed the dissenting viewpoints. It was jovial to the point where I'd call him a "Marxist" and he'd call me a "brownshirt" and it was all good-natured banter.

To the extent that "teams" exist in this forum I get that losing Nulli stings. It's even worse to lose his debate skills and knowledge to "the other side". just a few years ago I can't think of a better and more persuasive advocate for left-leaning policies than Nulli.

The one area where he's been steadfastly consistent is the 1st Amendment - not just on paper, but in spirit. He's ALWAYS advocated for uninhibited freedom of expression and has always blasted heavy-handed attempts at squashing differing opinion.

Moder8...

In 2015 the Black Panthers marched on the Texas Capitol to show support for open carry legislation. Texas then PASSED open carry. Therefore the presence of the Black Panthers at the state Capitol did not prevent the passage of open carry.

The next year in Dallas, Black Lives Matters had several people carrying rifles. That was when the sniper shot several police officers. The rifle carrying protestors calmly actually helped the police by showing they had a rifle but weren't involved with the sniper. Only one was detained and questioned (then released.) The police never freaked out that there were black protestors with rifles.

See #34 above.

It has happened more than once. The only reason the time in Dallas made the news was because of the sniper and not the protestors.

Some protesters at Thursday night's deadly Black Lives Matter demonstration in Dallas created confusion by legally carrying rifles. A sniper killed five officers. But proponents of the state's open carry laws say no changes are needed.

Also...

The Dallas-based Huey P Newton Gun Club marched through downtown Austin and posted up outside of the Capitol building with long guns Monday as the Texas Senate debates open carry bills.

The club is named after the co-founder of the Black Panther Party and inspires their message, according to member Erick Khafre.

Open Carry passed in 2015 and still exists. During the last fewc years there have been protests of one sort or another involving African Americans some of which carry rifles etc.

I don't view one flag in a vacuum, especially coming from someone who has been posting here for as long as I have.

Going further - you have been painting with an awfully broad brush of late, and quite frankly your tack has earned criticism that your moniker doesn't accurately reflect your posts in sum.

In short, you've kind of earned at least some divisive pushback lately, at least from some quarters.

I'll be honest - I almost always scroll down to "Posted by: __________" to determine whether or not I should read the post. When I see, "Posted by: MODER8" I always read those posts.

I don't personally have an issue with how you post but I understand how others do, especially given your Moniker and stance that it's an accurate reflection of you personally.

Police later retracted their initial assertions and deleted the photo after determining that Hughes had nothing to do with the attack that killed five police officers and injured seven other people

As I stated esrlier, there was one protestor questioned and then released. I think considering that a sniper was gunning down officers it wasn't unreasonable. What surprised me was all the other protestors who were carrying rifles had no problems - even while the shooting was happening. In fact they were quite cooperative with the police. It could have been much worse if there were a deep distrust of armed people of color - especially while the sniper was active.

I wonder: are we watching another NRA-sponsored charade where the gun-fondlers stampede other gun-fondlers into spending more and more on firearms and ammo.

It worked wonderfully for the eight years of Obama's presidency. The message seemed to be "Obama is coming for your guns!! You need proof? He's not doing that. But he will."

I don't remember how much the firearms' industry's profits went up, but it was good ROI for them.
