HOLY MOTHER OF GOD - the new coronavirus is a 3.8!!! How bad is that reproductive R0 value? It is thermonuclear pandemic level bad - never seen an actual virality coefficient outside of Twitter in my entire career. I'm not exaggerating

Coronavirus: Hong Kong on alert as China lockdown tightens
www.dw.com

...Chinese officials on Saturday announced that Wuhan was also building a second 1,000-bed makeshift hospital to deal with the crisis, to be completed February 3. It will be modeled on a SARS hospital built within six days in Beijing in 2003 during the deadly SARS outbreak....

When I watched DW news this morning, they showed video of back-hoes clearing the site.

the worst traits of this new virus are that it can be infectious without displaying symptoms and that it might be able to survive on surfaces for some time. anyone who trusts the numbers the chinese are giving is in serious need of a neurological examination, but even going by those it's spreading faster than at least one of the published models iirc.

>b-b-but only 50 out of 2000 people infected have died
you can only compare resolved cases. resolved means patient died or recovered. Nobody is "cured" of a virus.

BREAKING: A top Chinese health official warns that the rapid spread of the new #coronavirus is accelerating further.

5 million people left #Wuhan BEFORE lockdown.

#2019nCoV has sickened 2,744 and killed >80 people in #China.

Now that the #coronavirus has spread far outside the epicenter of #Wuhan--along with its purported ability to spread from asymptomatic people--prepare for the number of infections and deaths to escalate rapidly over the coming days and weeks.

This is just the beginning.

if you've ever given a moment of thought to how an "optimal" virus would operate, it would be one which is highly infectious but with a significant lag in time between onset and initial symptoms, which would ramp up severely from there.

Dr. Dena Grayson @DrDenaGrayson

Unlike H5N1 "bird flu" (which does not spread easily between people) or SARS (which was spread by only a handful of "super spreaders"), this #coronavirus DOES appear to spread easily between people, even after making the jump from an animal (this is not common).

In addition to being highly contagious, this novel #coronavirus can cause a SEVERE infection that can kill even healthy people. It's rare to see BOTH of these (bad) attributes in the same novel virus. Usually, it's one or the other.

As I've been saying, the number of actual #2019_nCov cases & deaths is likely MUCH higher than reported.

I got news for you, champ.

Neither of those are particularly unusual for a virus.

In fact, the exception is an infection that isn't contagious prior to symptoms.

you can only compare resolved cases. resolved means patient died or recovered. Nobody is "cured" of a virus.

What the hell does this even mean?

The standard criticism is that this only considers reported cases. As in symptomatic or lab confirmed.

But that's standard, so you're not really scoring any points by raising the objection.

So? All that says is that apparently we learned our lesson. Probably because of SARS and MERS.

Lancet reported 15% mortality, 83% transmissibility. 8 day day incubation, some carriers show no symptoms. Then they pulled the article.

The Spanish Flu had a 2% mortality rate. It circled the Earth twice.

The name of the bioweapon is NCoV-20. SARS escaped from the Huwong bioweapon facility 4 times. This was inevitable.

When China announced they were shutting down the city, a friend said, "Well this will be over soon. See they are being proactive."

The virus has already migrated past the city and has spread around the globe. It was too late to shut down the city. Them doing it was putting a band aid on a severed limb.

#38 | Posted by Gal_Tuesday at 2020-01-27 09:30 AM | Reply

You posted more than one twitter account (including retweet).

Both of which play up a single case to state the obvious: that actual numbers of cases are likely higher than reported.

That's always a given and is the reason it's phrased "reported cases".

Look, it is a worrisome situation that is very serious. But let's avoid trying to sensationalize it by squeezing drama out of every single detail.
