That is very, very unlikley. Having flown a helicopter (including the s-76) to and from work every two weeks for 8 years, I can say with certainty helicopter pilots never let their craft take on too much weight. Besides the S-76 has a capacity of 14 people. There were 9 on board. That's more than light enough for normal operations

Regardless, a helicopter pilot would never take off overweight. It would be suicide.

And I assume you are joking about a hot tub in a helicopter, right? LOL I can see a wet bar, but a few bottles of gin and a jar of olives don't weigh that much.

#67 | Posted by goatman at 2020-01-26 07:46 PM | Reply

And I assume you are joking about a hot tub in a helicopter, right?

A wee bit hyperbolic perhaps. :-) That said, industrial pilots fly under more stringent rules than others, and are less likely to bend them.

John Denver was an accomplished pilot and he died because he took off with a near empty gas tank.

Why would a pilot engage in an act (overloading his craft) that would likely cause his own death? That makes no sense.

And again, the S-76 has a capacity of 14. Nine were on Kobe's helicopter. It is highly unlikely weight was a factor.

#69 | Posted by goatman at 2020-01-26 08:01 PM | Reply

His death was no less tragic and unavoidable than police shooting an unarmed black man.

Why would a pilot engage in an act (overloading his craft) that would likely cause his own death?

My bet would be time pressure and assuming one of his engines was not likely to fail. One of the dangers of twin engine aircraft.

Like I said, NTSB report will be out in a year. Good bet that thing was loaded with monitors.

#71 | Posted by REDIAL at 2020-01-26 08:10 PM | Reply

"My bet would be time pressure and assuming one of his engines was not likely to fail."

How would overloading the craft give them more time? That would have slowed them down. It would take extra time to load whatever and flight speed would have been reduced due to extra weight. And what would they have overloaded it with? It wasn't people. There was still room for 5 more people.

I did not realize there was an engine failure. I didn't see that in any of the stories.

He was flying VFR in fog. I think it is much more likely that was a factor rather than overloading.

In a utility transport, yes. Some of those things are decked out with acoustic modules that limit them to less but passengers don't need headsets. Those would add weigh, no?

I read about witness reports hearing "engine sputtering". Did not read anything about VFR in fog though. What kind of suicidal pilot would fly VFR in fog?

None would take off in it, to be sure. But if in the air and it forms around you, you don't have much choice but to fly in it.

And there are a lot of countries who don't give a crap about a helicopter going down and killing children, yet nobody would consider them self-absorbed and it wouldn't warrant someone spreading hate because of it. Oh, I'm aware..and I've traveled vast stretches of it, so you might take heed when I tell you that while the US is always first in line to lend a hand after a disaster, the American people are shallow, disinterested and woefully uninformed about anything that happens outside our borders. I'm also aware that we can't respond to every tragedy, but we appear to reserve our condolences and our "thoughts and prayers" for celebrities. Not because we actually care more, but because 1) more people will hit "like" and 2) they can't find most foreign countries on a world map.

Now reporting that it was foggy when they took off. Police had grounded their choppers due to weather but they had special permission to fly.

#91 | Posted by REDIAL at 2020-01-27 07:16 PM | Reply

Update:

The pilot asked air traffic controllers a special clearance, known as Special Visual Flight Rules, to fly in less than optimal weather, said NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy, who went to the crash scene to collect evidence.

The helicopter, she added, circled in the air for 12 minutes before being given the clearance. The pilot then asked controllers for "flight following", an assistance given to helicopters to avoid collisions, but was told the craft was too low to be picked up by radar.

Minutes later, the pilot said he was "climbing to avoid a cloud layer", she added. The helicopter climbed and began a left descending turn, according to radar data, before communication was lost "consistent with the accident location".

Sounds a lot like the JFK Jr. crash.

Acronym time. VFR into IMC, ending in CFIT. Flew into bad weather, lost control, crashed. The primer on it is called "178 Seconds to Live". That's how long before the average pilot has the machine in a Graveyard Spiral, an unrecoverable, overspeeding, descending turn.
