Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Two days ago, NPR reporter Mary Louise Kelly revealed that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had berated her with expletives after she asked him about the Ukraine scandal. Today, President Donald Trump chimed in -- by appearing to threaten to cut off NPR's federal funding.

I am already a donor to my local NPR station which is WLRN and here is my promise that if Trump stops federal funds going to NPR I will double my monthly contribution. I know some here don't like the corporate support slowly edging its way into reporting but it is still better than anything else I can get in my car and I will continue to support it.

NPR gets less than 1% of the operating budget from government funding.

Should not get any govt money as been biased since the 70s. Should be able to continue on its own by selling advertisements.

For years 'Voice of America' got 100% of it funding from taxpayers, and it was very biased.

But getting back to NPR, I'd say if they're able to cover better then 99% of their expenses from private sources, they're already doing pretty good.

Because they don't play favorites doesn't mean biased reporting. Because they go after BS and Lies doesn't mean biased reporting. They ask hard questions and work for answers yes.

OCU - to be clear: "While NPR does not receive any direct federal funding, it does receive a small number of competitive grants from CPB and federal agencies like the Department of Education and the Department of Commerce. This funding amounts to approximately 2% of NPR's overall revenues."

I will double my donations. I have been donating since I was a very right leaning fiscally responsible Republican. (Never bought into the Religious Right - I am and have always been about personal freedoms.)

NPR needs to have a new show titled: things Trump can stick where the sun doesn't shine.

#7 | Posted by Tor at 2020-01-27 09:20 PM | Reply | Funny: 3

Literally everything Trump does is an applause line for his troglodyte base.

Public broadcasting gave us "librul" programming like Firing Line and Wall Street Week.

The private market has given us The View, Entertainment Tonight, QVC, and Fox News.

Let's don't gloss over the real story here. It isn't about how much.

It's about Trump once again threatening to use the power of his office for revenge.

_______________________________________________________

Let's skip ahead to a couple years into "Dictator Trump's" second term. Mary Louise Kelly would find herself in a shallow grave for committing such an act of treason against Donald Trump's "state."

Of course all righties can do is whine about bias, because reality is biased against them.

Also, anyone want to take a crack at explaining how this isn't authoritarian? Using the powers of POTUS to be vengeful and spiteful against a free media outlet for accurately reporting your misdeeds?

#18 | Posted by jpw at 2020-01-28 08:42 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 7

The worst part is that NPR didn't do anything here that warranted Pompeo's outburst, much less a response from the "president." If i were Pompeo's boss and he couldn't answer questions about US policy without throwing a tantrum at a reporter i'd fire his ass the same day.

But being a baby and attacking the press is an asset in this embarrassment of an administration. Righties defending this nonsense are ludicrous people.

They have a ludicrous leader who amplifies their own sense of disenfranchisement.

Yeah, corporations have become woke. It's an amazing turnaround from the days they were conservative and focused on increasing stockholder value. Now they all want to be applauded by the MSM and the progressive elite for their wokeness.

Uh huh....sure.

"Yeah, corporations have become woke. It's an amazing turnaround from the days they were conservative and focused on increasing stockholder value."

Today's monopolies do have PR concerns which serve to help them continue owning monopolies. Your complaints against them are focused on their PR which is a tiny part of their overall efforts, spending, profit centers. If you really cared about what you claim to then you would oppose monopolies in many areas of industry today. Where efforts to combat monopolies are ongoing consumers get lower prices, far more choices and better service.

"Such "corporate vigilantism" is particularly dangerous when, according to one recent survey, upwards of two-thirds of top CEOs see their responsibility is to shape society, as opposed, say, meeting simply the needs of shareholders. Such thinking is particularly widespread among those companies " the five tech giants that now constitute the world's five most wealthiest companies " who dominate and in some cases, exercise near monopoly control of key markets.....

But over the last twenty years most of the oligarchy--whose firms are overwhelmingly non-union--have embraced the progressive social and environmental agenda. The clear majority of wealthy donors support the Democratic Party while vast majority of the ultra-rich foundations " funded by the offspring of the Rockefellers and the Fords based on fossil fuels-- now all tilt well to the left.

It used to get a lot higher, but the government's share has been going down for decades. They'd be able to make up for the lost revenue easily enough. As with almost any story these days about government cuts or policy changes, it's more about Trump's insatiable lust for retaliation and/or extortion than anything else.

Same reason you pay for wars you cannot fight. Or firefighters you never call. Or police you never need. Or a post office that only sends you bills.

We are all interconnected. Interdependent. Do your part. Kick in. Pay it forward.

Ask NOT what your country can do for you. But what YOU can do for YOUR country. And the least you can do... THE VERY LEAST you can do is pay your damn taxes. And the President is supposed to set the example.

America needs you to grow up now little sniper. Do your part. Freedom is not free.
