Ronald Brownstein: The virtually lockstep Republican defense of President Donald Trump so far during his impeachment trial marks a new milestone in the Senate's long-term evolution into a more partisan and regimented institution that demands unwavering party loyalty and punishes the freewheeling independence that characterized the great legislators through the body's history.

Good analysis. Also very depressing. Things will not be changing anytime soon.

Let's not also forget that the current Senate "majority" represents 12,000,000 fewer people than the "minority."

Approximately 7,450 people die in the US every day. Because most who die are old, let us assume 4k of them were registered voters. On a high turnout year there will be 50%, so 2k voters and around half and half split by party. Therefore the repuglicans are losing 1,000 voters per day. And they are not replacing them so t-rump is starting out about 1,460,000 voters short of what he had in '16. This R downturn is going to severely affect the 23 R ----birds running this year. At the same time, anti-rump sentiment is not going to do anything except getting stronger. And this little paragraph barely scratches the surface of the dynamics of the blue wave.

2 reasons for that,

1. To prevent 50% + 1 rule

2. To allow the states to have some ability to protect their own interests at the federal level.

"To prevent 50% + 1 rule"

50% +1 of the Electoral College doesn't count?

The States destroyed it by amending the Constitution. Now the Senate is just two more House members.

The Senators are no longer beholden to represent the State legislature. The State govt has a better understanding of the needs of the State than the people.

The people's representatives in the Legislature devote their life to the need of the State. By choosing the Senators, they represent the State.

The House was to the people as the Senate to the States. Now the House & Senate is just the House and House.

If the EC goes, the small States will lose.

We all know the EC exists to protect the minority. Socialist/communists hate the minority having equal say.
Remember when some woman complained about praying for the return of our astronauts?
That was upheld because of one voice.
The majority did not trump the offended woman.
That..is how a Republic works.

One of the stupidest things I've read in weeks.

Not only because it's based around the mouthbreathing "soshulizm" nonsense but it's posted by a member of the minority with outsize power within the current system.

If the US survives the boomer generation history will look back at this era with unkind eyes.

To prevent 50% + 1 rule

Please explain the objective benefit of that as compared to 47.6% rule, which is what we have right now in the Senate.

To allow the states to have some ability to protect their own interests at the federal level.

No individual state can do that with just 2 Senators anyway, so that argument is hogwash.
