Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

MIKE BLOOMBERG'S PRESIDENTIAL campaign plagiarized portions of its plans for maternal health, LGBTQ equality, the economy, tax policy, infrastructure, and mental health from research publications, media outlets, and a number of nonprofit, educational, and policy groups.

The Intercept found that exact passages from at least eight Bloomberg plans or accompanying fact sheets were direct copies of material from media outlets including CNN, Time, and CBS, a research center at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the American Medical Association, Everytown for Gun Safety, Building America's Future Educational Fund, and other organizations.

I love this:

Bloomberg's own media entity, Bloomberg News, takes a hard line against plagiarism in its style guide, "The Bloomberg Way." "Plagiarism"the unattributed copying of others' work"is inexcusable," the style guide, which was updated in 2017, reads. "Plagiarism is theft. Be prepared to lose your job if you plagiarize. Always credit original reporting to those who did the legwork, and never reproduce quotes made to others if we heard them ourselves. Press summaries must cite the publication that did the reporting and explain the attribution used in the original story."

Classic.

Copying it with attribution is fine. Copying it without attribution is not fine, not fine at all. That very thing torpedoed Biden's first presidential run.

#4 I haven't plagiarized anything. So, your post makes no sense.

Bloomberg is running to keep himself and all his billionaire friends safe from Sanders. He should ---- off, but he won't.

The only value i see in Bloomberg is how hard it must trigger Trump to see an actual New York billionaire who didn't have to run two-bit scams his whole life to get where he is.

While that is what he will say, I don't think that's why he copied them..

My guess he hadn't thought of these problems in any structured way, and quite frankly no one really cares about "Plans" so long as they aren't outrageous.

I don't think there is one President that can say here's my plan to overhaul XXXX, and that President went and did it exactly like he planned.

Its just a talking point.

So it really doesn't matter, but as JeffJ points out its bad look.

#10 You're not the boss of me.

This is relevant news. Bloomberg is running for the Democratic nomination. If you want the Democratic Party to select the best possible candidate, getting this news out there is important.

" Bloomberg is running to keep himself and all his billionaire friends safe from Sanders."

He's the Democrats' back-up plan should they fail to be able to prop up Pete.

That said, this is really not a big deal IMO. You borrow good ideas wherever you find them. A big person gives credit where it is due though. IMO the bigger issue is Democrats' and the media's enthusiasm to accommodate him.

You would think that with the money and resources available to his campaign they would hire somebody who could competently read info from multiple sources then synthesize a policy statement that includes all the info.

It's really not hard to do and whenever I see this kind of story I just shake my head at the laziness and half asses nature of campaigns.

So did Biden. Big deal. Would a billionaire plagiarize?

Bloomberg is only in it to troll Trump. He's not getting a single delegate.

#17 | Posted by TFDNihilist at 2020-02-09 10:29 AM | Reply

Honestly I'm not sure how big of a deal this is, but JPW is right in #15 that with all of the money he's throwing around hire enough people to just do this correctly.

Bloomberg is only in it to troll Trump

That's probably just an excuse to try to ingratiate himself to Trump haters. He could easily run ads trolling Trump without being a candidate.

Jeff sure gets when others practice his own religion of whataboutism.

Jeff, let me help you with this.
Bloomberg plagiarized just like Trump frequently has done and I refuse to support either of them.

How's that work for you? Is that what you want to hear?

Bloomberg is only in it to troll Trump

Any bad look he can give to Trump is money well spent in his mind.

He could easily run ads trolling Trump without being a candidate.

Gets more notice as a 'Bloomberg campaign' ad.
He's not running to win, only to defeat Trump. He'll support the eventual D nominee as long as it's not Bernie.

Says who? If the point of the ads is to attack Trump, there's no need for Bloomberg to even mention himself (unless he's legitimately running for president).

If it's a good plan, then please use it. Attribution would be good too.

Trumpers need to stop acting like they know anything about integrity or ideas.

It's even more sad when they try to talk about those things.

Plagiarism is basically acceptable in business, so this is what running government -- or at least a campaign -- like a business is like.

Plagiarism is about as much of a thought crime as a crime can be, but everybody steals everybody else's ideas all the time, and having an idea isn't enough, you also have to execute. And even then, doesn't mean people will want your brilliant idea, perfectly executed. You might just be "ahead of your time" like when Apple basically invented the iPad 20 years earlier and called it the Newton.
