I guess he'll just have to get by on the remaining $120 billion.

Jeff will make money on this. Climate change won't be averted unless green energy is cheaper than fossil energy. Green energy has reached the tipping point. From here on Jeff will benefit from lower energy costs.

#3 Good point, we should tax at least half of that and use it for education and to fight hunger and homelessness. Glad you agree nobody needs that much money.

#6 that's a flawed way to look at it. Green energy is made entirely out of petroleum products, and the Oil Industry is owned by the same holding companies that own Green Energy.

Next people are going to find out Macro Beer bought Craft Beer's marketshare back. Shocking times I know.

Everyone in America will benefit from lower energy costs. The entire world will benefit from lower energy costs. Billionaires have a moral responsibility to spend their money wisely and for the benefit of mankind. I am sure it is a publicity stunt but it it cuts energy costs from everyone then it was the philanthropic thing to do.

Andrew Carnagie said it best:

. . .
This, then, is held to be the duty of the man of Wealth: First, to set an example of modest, unostentatious living, shunning display or extravagance; to provide moderately for the legitimate wants of those dependent upon him; and after doing so to consider all surplus revenues which come to him simply as trust funds, which he is called upon to administer, and strictly bound as a matter of duty to administer in the manner which, in his judgment, is best calculated to produce the most beneficial result for the community-the man of wealth thus becoming the sole agent and trustee for his poorer brethren, bringing to their service his superior wisdom, experience, and ability to administer-doing for them better than they would or could do for themselves.

Andrew Carnagie, "Wealth," North American Review, 148, no. 391 (June 1889): 653, 65762.

"Jeff will make money on this"

Of course. Why be either intentionally naive or just plain ignorant?

Reversing climate change will be the biggest thing in several generations.

It will require, among other things, a massive technological breakthrough. The planet has money and will pay for those technologies.....just like everyone who got massively rich from the industrial revolution.

Well put.

When people believe investing into fighting climate change is going to better their lives and not worsen it......it will happen.

All we need is technology that gives people that belief.

Technology put us here.....it's also the only thing that will save us.
Technology wrapped inside capitalism.

His money. But for now. He is just the trustee. Of wealth he gained from society. He has an obligation to make sure that money is spent wisely. And in the best interest of the community. He will die someday then who's money is it? He cannot spend it all and if he loses control of it then it may not be spent wisely. It is like having ownership and control of something so powerful it can destroy or save lives depending on How it is used. Kind of like nuclear energy. So billionaires are actually liable and responsible that the money is spent wisely.

Reflect on this. If you can Mr Dust. Is it ok for a billionaire to spend his money in a way that is harmful to the society in which he lives?

Bezos is a turd. This is a lame attempt to BUY respectability. He should be taxed until he is "only" a millionaire. Billionaires should not even exist. Take their money and give it to the welfare queens and other more deserving people. Use it to end hunger Nationwide and fund the green new deal.

#23 | Posted by Effeteposer at 2020-02-17 09:42 PM | Reply

He is just trying to buy back left wing support after he single-handedly killed the homeless tax in Seattle. Bezo's is not a leftwinger - he is about making money and he knows he has pissed off Trump so all the fat government contracts are off the table now. So, he needs to win over the left to get back into a competitive bidding situation.

Re #23.i kinda agree ... The proof is in the pudding.

If he helps American home owners get cheaper energy and more energy efficient homes and energy efficient transportation then he would be helping everyone. Maybe he can help us upgrade our infrastructure since Humpy is too busy spending all our loose change on a useless wall for his vanity. And build more cheaper energy efficient homes and cars. Then Help the homeless get into one of those energy efficient homes and provide them with energy efficient transportation so they can rejoin our society.

Maybe that would help raise all our ships out of the muck We have made of things.

It's because Amazon has one of the largest carbon footprints on the planet. They could pay to sequester it right now. They don't. Advertising you are going to do something and slow rolling it is cheaper and looks way better. They announced "Going Green" last September.

#26 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2020-02-18 07:00 AM | Reply

It's not specifically green energy or efficiency. It's any "green" project you can pitch and get a grant for. Bezos in return gets tax deductions for his donations to his non-profit.

#27 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2020-02-18 07:50 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Bezos buys an indulgence from the Church of Global Warming and protects himself from criticism of his massive carbon footprint. Don't see him turning down his thermostat or flying commercial anytime soon. That's for us plebes.

Even a personal $10,000,000,000.00 investment can't buy Bezos out of a Nulli tu quoque fallacy.

That's a stupid post, even for you. And I haven't done the rigorous kind of economic analysis required to determine where someone's "need" for money stops and their "want" begins - but i do know that Bezos is well past that line. All you have to do is acknowledge the same, if you're capable.

Bezos] said the Bezos Earth Fund would help back scientists, activists, non-government organizations and any other effort that "offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world."

So the money will go to "scientists, activists [and] non-government organizations""in other words, the Left. I can guarantee that Bezos's billions will have zero effect on the climate, but they will enrich left-wing nonprofits, "scientists" who toe the global warming line, and utilities who greedily profit from foolish expenditures on wind and solar energy. I assume that Bezos is smart enough to know this, and that this is his way of sliding money to the Left without acknowledging what he is doing.

I'm sorry that scientists are "the left" and that conservatives are apparently too stupid to become scientists.

Who should he give the money to to fight climate change? Sean Hannity?

#34 | Posted by JOE at 2020-02-18 10:43 AM | Reply | Funny: 1

So what EXACTLY is he going to do to Fight Climate Change? Raise taxes, limit freedom, eliminate the rights of masses? Bezos is a self absorbed ----- who thinks he's an oligarch. He and Bloomberg are the epitome of individuals that got rich from manipulating others. This latest $10 bn promise is likely nothing more than another way of getting out of paying his fair share of taxes.

none of those things require an investment. You just do it.

No, he will give that money to activists who will use it to terrify the masses into accepting higher taxes and limitations on their freedom.

Like Humpy of the University of CHumps?

Kinda hypocritical of you to complain about billionaires while you support that other so-called "billionaire" who made his money from manipulating and conning others.

#38 | Posted by donnerboy at 2020-02-19 11:24 AM | Reply

He should give $100,000,000,000 to the treasury in taxes. Then I will believe he is serious. Not before.

#39 | Posted by Effeteposer at 2020-02-19 12:03 PM | Reply

Bezos didn't make money manipulating others... he made money putting people out of work. He is creating a new caste system in the US, that is similar to the one created 100 years ago when corporations enslaved workers . The atmosphere is similar too. Socialism, communism and other anti establishmentisms rolled easily off the tongue back then much like they do today.

It's funny how the clowns create the conditions that foster the things they resist. You know like now because of Trumplethinskin... in a couple years Iran will have nukes... to protect their business interests... so they can compete in the market place... like we do.

Soon AliBaba will own Amazon.

It's hard to hate rich people who donate significant portions of their wealth to good causes.

Gates does it. He isn't leaving his kids an empire.

Bezos is still hated but this helps some.

Maybe liberals just hate evil billionaires hell bent on spending money only on enriching themselves while screwing the country, i.e. Koch Brothers? Just a thought.
