T.A. Frank: If everything goes Bloomberg's way, Sanders emerges as the front-runner after South Carolina, and Bloomberg, with a hurricane of cash, draws sustenance from the flameouts of Biden and Buttigieg and Klobuchar, establishing himself as the centrist alternative.

You allow a billionaire to buy the nomination and the Democratic Party is finished. The young will never trust them again. Good luck riding into retirement on their backs.

Early on, those who cobbled the system together under which we labor were opposed to the same political parties they soon set about creating. They had good reasons for rejecting parties (at least in theory), and some of those reasons are being rubbed into our faces much like Jimmy Cagney squished that grapefruit into Mae Clark's mug.

As a different Thomas Frank said four years ago, the Dems are now the Party of Martha's Vineyard. A Bloomberg nomination would put an exclamation point on that.

Bernie will prevail,Bloomberg isn't even a dem. Isn't that what everyone said about Bernie,? Bloomberg LOVED the Iraq war. He stopped and frisked everyone. If he wins the nom. America just became a one party state.

While I'm sure mattress and nulli would love that. I hope other more enlightened people here would be disgusted.

Well, you can go big tent and occasionally wield power or go on an ideological purge and spend most of the time out of power.

Bernie Sanders Won't Yet Explain Details Of How To Pay For Medicare For All

www.npr.org

"You're asking me to come up with an exact detailed plan of how every American " how much you're going to pay more in taxes, how much I'm going to pay," he said. "I don't think I have to do that right now."

"We're paying it now in a very reactionary, regressive way. I want to pay for it in a progressive way."

8% VAT and deep cuts to the military will git her done. Tell BERNIE. Americans are simpletons about their own self interests. They always want to give you their last dollar to people far wealthier than them. Usually for nothing in return.

What Is a Value-Added Tax (VAT)?
A value-added tax (VAT) is a consumption tax placed on a product whenever value is added at each stage of the supply chain, from production to the point of sale. The amount of VAT that the user pays is on the cost of the product, less any of the costs of materials used in the product that have already been taxed.

Bernie is the most wanted among Democrats. That triggers you. Hard.

Sanders isn't a Democrat. If it's a brokered convention, he loses.

If he manages to win the primary he likely loses the General in a landslide.

It's not concern trolling. It's a statement of fact. Like the good Socialist that he is, Sanders latches on to the Democratic Party so he can reap the benefits but when it no longer suits his purposes he ditches the party giving nothing in return. Party loyalists notice this schit.

#34 | Posted by JeffJ at 2020-02-20 10:23 AM | Reply

If Sanders is truly honest he'd be running as an Independent, or as a member of the US Socialist Party (yes, it exists). But he doesn't have a chance on either platform so he leeches off the Democratic Party.

Maybe Sanders has been an Independent until recently. But his politics have always been most closely aligned to FDR Democrats.

Just a little anecdotal story...

We live in an extremely conservative county. It's so conservative that Democrats don't even bother putting anyone on the ballot anymore.

My wife is on our local City Council. In some ways her personal views are even more progressive than mine, but we both remain unaffiliated. If we were to declare affiliation with the Democrats, working with the other side to get ANYTHING done would be an complete exercise in futility.

The best thing that could happen in this country is if everyone could get away from Party or left/right association, and simply move on to pragmatic ideas. My wife and I manage to have our voices heard, and to get some things done because we work hard at the local level while avoiding partisanship.

Even though his philosophy is definitely left of center, I think Sanders has managed to work within the system because he has avoided partisanship more than many other politicians.

#36 | Posted by Whatsleft at 2020-02-20 11:03 AM | Reply

But his politics have always been most closely aligned to FDR Democrats.

From the left of FDR, Sanders praised SovietUnion and Cuba. Sanders waxes eloquently about the Soviet subway system, ignoring the reality of the world around it.

Thats my view of Socialist in general. They pick one item, and say we should lose all our freedoms for this one thing. Then the one thing isn't very well implemented, and we have lost freedoms. Socialism is a lose lose proposition.

Anyone saying the Soviet Union or Cuba were/are nice places, hasn't lived in either. People have been voting with their feet, and floaties for decades.

You have a point. I know you probably won't like this author, who is a #nevertrumper, but:

Sanders was ridiculously naive about the Soviet Union. The Trump ads write themselves.

Sanders was amazed at the open 'self-criticism' of his Soviet hosts, but they were playing him. I hope I'm not forced to vote for him to oust Trump.

"Anyone saying the Soviet Union or Cuba were/are nice places, hasn't lived in either"

Bernie Sanders traveled to communist Cuba and urges a political revolution.' Will exile Miami take him seriously?

"For us Cuban Americans, we have this baggage," said Bernadette Pardo, who hosts a Spanish-language morning show on Radio Mamb and writes a column for el Nuevo Herald. "For us, socialism' is always going to be something to fear."

Which is probably why Denmark came up in last night's debate:

"When I talk about democratic socialist, I'm not looking at Venezuela. I'm not looking at Cuba," Sanders said. "I'm looking at countries like Denmark and Sweden."

Read more here: www.miamiherald.com

Bernie is going to have to keep making that distinction.

You sound like Mayor Pete:

"We've got to wake up as a party," Buttigieg said. "Most Americans don't see where they fit if they've got to choose between a socialist who thinks that capitalism is the root of all evil and a billionaire who thinks money ought to be the root of all power."

"Let's put forward somebody who's actually a Democrat," Buttigieg said to applause. "We shouldn't have to choose between one candidate who wants to burn this party down and another candidate who wants to buy this party out. We can do better."
