A Marine recruit arrested for allegedly striking a drill instructor at the service's San Diego boot camp has spent most of the last two years in the brig and is now confined to a federal prison hospital.

Drill instructors do everything they can to push recruits to their breaking point. It is intentional. To throw a recruit into prison for years without a charge or trial is criminal in it's self.

I have seen DIs stand a half inch from a recruit and scream at them "You wanna punch me you little schitball, go ahead, do it!"

This kid is not a draftee. Let him out! discharge him. Send him home. He is not helping the Marines.

When a man or woman freely enlists, there should be an understanding that, if he or she can not participate productively, that recruit should be sent home, not imprisoned for years.

The military should not be allowed to imprison a failed recruit as a criminal. Especially when the Military is too cowardly to charge and try the soldier. Not everybody can do that job. Failure to become a Marine is no crime.

I'm guessing there is something more to the story. I spent 3 years as an instructor and troop handler at MCT San Diego (88-91). While it was not common, "incidents" did happen. They were usually dealt with in NJP or at worst, an OTH Discharge. Unless it was malicious, they were usually put on a track of separation from the service.

"Wouldn't you rather be at home sucking on Momma's -----" is what they shouted at me.

So don't join, snowflake. The recruiters are turning people away these days. The smart ones (obviously that excludes you) that are snowflakes don't go there.

I'm sure with your style of training we'd have much better warriors -- those who say, "ooooh, don't hurt me Mr. Taliban. Let me pull out my time out card which says you have to leave me alone"

Unbelievable.

I bet this kid is still collecting pay while he is incarcerated. A friend told me that he met someone in boot who had been there for slightly over a year (got rolled, then broken, then healed, then a new division) and graduated with almost $10k.

Since he's been in "service," for over two years...does the VA qualify him as a veteran? He should have been a OTH separation after maybe a month or three in the brig.

Good point and context from experience. There has to be something additional here, like continued combative behavior toward the staff around him to create new and additional incidents. The services are typically quick to sep people who don't go with the flow of how things work, so this is quite the exceptional case and there has to be something going on to create reason to keep him in government "care."

Maybe his last name says it all. Institutional racism and malice.

It has been said that the US marine crops [sic] is akin to the French foreign legion for South America. Doubt it is "institutional racism."

What would a gob like you know about being a Marine?

They should prosecute or release him. He is not a Marine. And not helping the Marines. And apparently doesn't want to be one. But the problem is he is under the USMJ. Which means that he is basically Owned by the US government and not really protected by the Constitution. Sounds like there is more to this case than simple assault. Sounds like they want to get rid of him but he is not cooperating. Because he is cra cra.
