The Trump administration is bracing for a possible coronavirus outbreak in the United States that could sicken thousands -- straining the government's public health response and threatening an economic slowdown in the heat of President Donald Trump's reelection campaign.

Coronavirus May Be the Disease X' Health Agency Warned About
www.bloomberg.com

...The World Health Organization cautioned years ago that a mysterious "disease X" could spark an international contagion. The new coronavirus, with its ability to quickly morph from mild to deadly, is emerging as a contender....

"Whether it will be contained or not, this outbreak is rapidly becoming the first true pandemic challenge that fits the disease X category," Marion Koopmans, head of viroscience at Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, and a member of the WHO's emergency committee, wrote Wednesday in the journal Cell....

"We are not seeing community spread here in the United States yet, but it's very possible -- even likely -- that it may eventually happen," Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters Friday....

The article paints a somewhat grim picture...

Costa Mesa city officials are asking the CDC and the U.S. Department of Health for more information before feeling comfortable with the transfer of as many as 70 confirmed coronavirus patients to the city.

It depends upon the Federal reaction to the virus. Most people wouldn't blame for the economy, so long as Trump does what can be done regarding stopping the spreading.

It might spur investment in the US for factories to augment China factories? You never know.

Coronavirus outbreak edges closer to pandemic

There are outbreaks. There are epidemics. And there are pandemics, where epidemics become rampant in multiple countries and continents simultaneously. The novel coronavirus that causes the disease named covid-19 appears to be on the verge of that third, globe-shaking stage.

Yeah see, because like everything else, this is all about Trump; it's his re-election they are worried about, not that they have, "fired the government's entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure.

Like I said elsewhere, hell of a way to run a railroad. It will be interesting to see how Trump will spin these actions on his part as the Democrats fault.

I love this timeline.

Notorious germaphobe fires pandemic response team a year before a virus wipes out his genetically inferior brood.

Given the...ahem...quality of your posts I suspected you were a 4chan rat.

You mean like firing pandemic response experts, scientists and trying to cut CDC funding?

What's funny is this sort of event has been long predicted by public health experts and scientists. The right, in their infinite ignorant wisdom, always responded with "the sky is falling the sky is falling what a waste of money" sort of responses.

Trump being Trump, the WH is now almost entirely filled with people like himself. That is people who care about Trump first and then their lily-white asses.

When people start dying from this in America, of interest is whom Trump will blame. He'll have to get creative about this one.

Half of the country knows that Trump is a pathological liar, who lies about everything from crowd size to weather maps. In a real emergency, how will we believe a word he says? And since we also know that he will fire anyone in the govt who tells him--and us--and inconvenient truth, how will we believe a word of any of the officials he puts forward to inform us? Widespread panic isn't a good option, so a lot of responsibility will fall on the shoulders of state and local officials in the event of a real national emergency/crisis.

"When people start dying from this in America, of interest is whom Trump will blame. "

Democratic governors and big city mayors in places like CA and NY? Filthy homeless people, undocumented immigrants and the poor? Those would be my guesses off the top of my head.

I had to open this to see if the absurd was happening. Blaming Trump for the virus.
Wow just wow. I thought dubya controlling the weather took the cake.

Obama. Somehow it will all be Obama's fault.

"He'll have to get creative about this one."

I'm so cynical I bet he probably has more people working right now on who-to-blame-it-on messaging than he does on handling the potential crisis itself. I sure hope I'm wrong, and that for once in his God-forsaken presidency, the very stable genius doesn't think he is the smartest guy in the room and actually brings in real experts whose advice he actually listens to and follows.

Nobody blamed Bush for Hurricane Katrina. What they blamed him for was the federal response to it. No one is going to blame Trump for the virus. What people will hold him responsible for the federal response to it.

See the difference?

IOW, the paper-towel tossing Trump needs to avoid a "Heckava job, Brownie!" moment that gets repeatedly broadcast while scenes of American carnage flash by in the background.

You know, Trump is such a germaphobe, he's unlikely to go out amongst crowds of people if the virus really takes hold here in the US, so he's unlikely to do any paper-towel tossing. And since he is such a germaphobe, maybe he'll take this as seriously as he should. Let's all pray that is the case. Let's pray Trump is blessed with God's wisdom and grace.

@#17 ... See the difference? ...

You cite the Trump admin flew 14 Coronavirus patients to the US (which they did, and over the objections of the CDC, btw), and somehow you try to twist that into blaming Pres Trump for the corona virus.

Whether or not there is a difference is irrelevant.

What is relevant is the apparent complete misunderstanding of the English language that your comment represents.

Apparently you haven't gotten the latest WH talking points:

Trump was reportedly 'furious' after officials flew Americans with the coronavirus back to the US from a quarantined cruise ship in Japan without telling him

But since this is Trump, the pathological-liar-in-chief, nobody knows what the truth is.

Yeah we do. He thought he would be lauded for "saving Americans" and then blamed someone else when his delusion didn't play out in reality.

He is already doing what he can do. Which is create chaos. And division. He is firing all the competent people in government and replacing them with party loyalists (like a good nazi do) regardless of their skill sets. As long as they don't disagree with.

Yeah. Trump is doing what he can all right.

I am sure the deplorables will be very pleased with the results. No matter how many die. They will have reserved it, of course. And Trumpy will find someone to blame. Hopefully they will not be American and they will be a DemonRat and maybe even brown. And not from around here.

Trump will go into hiding if we get any sort of real pandemic here. Most likely he will also try to declare martial law and cancel the elections.
I could see a major pandemic being his ticket to an actual dictatorship like the reichstag fire was to the Nazis. Americans are easily led and fooled when frightened. We are a weak and callow people under the skin.

The House and Senate can take action and override a Presidential veto.

The clock is ticking. When a US city is quarantined, look to Congress to take action.

If they dont, then two branches will fail the public.
