Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, February 23, 2020

Mike Hughes, the self-made engineer who billed himself as the "world's greatest daredevil," was killed Saturday outside Barstow during a launch of a homemade rocket gone wrong, his publicist confirmed. Hughes, who went by the nickname "Mad Mike," was captured on video as he rode a rocket into the sky, failed to activate a parachute and then plummeted to his death, said Darren Shuster, his public relations representative. ... Saturday's launch was supposed to be featured in "Homemade Astronauts," a series on the Science Channel, according to Discovery.com. The series followed people looking to "explore the final frontier on limited budgets," the company said.

Hughes stated that he built his homemade rocket mostly through, "trial and error," and admitted, "You don't get a lot of second chances, though, in the rocket business."

was only supposed to take Hughes 5,000 feet in the air

I assume he was working his way to go a lot higher than 5,000 feet in his poo rocket?

Why not buy a lot of helium and send up a balloon with a cam? LOL

Although police did not positively identify Hughes

Sounds like he stuck the landing.

We've been watching the progress of this guy's efforts for years over on an engineering message board I participate on. Many of the people who have commented over the years had predicted that this is exactly what was going to happen. But before you write this guy off completely, considering his weak engineering background and his wacko beliefs, he was making progress and actually had a couple of successful unmanned flights, the most recent was in March 2018. Here's a video of that launch showing how it was supposed to go:

I was wondering if this was the flat earther guy. The story confirmed it was.

That was some incredible speed at take off. The G force must've been substantial. No wonder he passed out (but how did they know this?)

Poor guy never got to prove the earth is flat. Who's the next flat earther in line to do so?

The man was misguided, but his quest to to know the truth about the earth for himself. First hand knowledge, not book learning,is the scientific method itself. He was a brave searcher for the the truth. He was foolish in a way, but in earlier times before we really knew the truth,he would have been a scientist. He deserves more respect for that desire to Know from experience than people here are giving him.
RIP proud searcher for the truth.

Normally I would agree with you. This is so much a case of if the shoe fits though - fits in with the rest of the Trump's best and brightest. This guy was what a brilliant moron. Brilliant in that he had the ability to build a steam powered rocket. A moron on in not believing the earth is a sphere and to actually get in it and ride it after the last time he did so.

I really am struggling having any sympathy for him - he was a flaming idiot thus "Mad". His family sure. I would call it Darwinism except if he was going to breed it was already done.

Misguided? I say Delusional. High Altitude Balloon - they make kits for hobbyists. You could build one you could ride in... It would be cheaper and would have taken him a LOT higher.

Anyone in the Southwest want to see the Earth is round? On a sunny day, drive to Pike's Peak, Go to the top and look east. You will see the curve of the Earth.

First hand knowledge, not book learning,is the scientific method itself.

If he practiced the scientific method he wouldn't have been a flat earther.

He was either a crackpot or someone who called the earth flat only to get more publicity for his manned rocket stunts.

What's interesting is that Flat Earthers don't believe in gravity, either. They think the ground is perpetually rising to meet them. So obviously the rocket wasn't going fast enough, and things caught up with him.
