Today was the first day since the Corona virus has been in the news that I sort of became frightened that this could be something none of us want to ever experience.

This is a Trump panic as much as a virus panic, in that there's no one in this country that thinks Donald has a handle on it if it gets here.

Trump asserts coronavirus 'under control' as stocks plunge

"The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries," Trump, who is traveling on official business in India, tweeted. "CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!"

#11 Excellent article!

Half the planet will get this virus before a vaccine can be produced at scale, unless a containment miracle happens.

Trump weakened US defenses at exactly the wrong time. His incompetence will cost more lives that Bush's 9/11.

In written Chinese, the word crisis is the combination of two characters, that being danger and opportunity. Anyone who uses their gray mater instead of their hormones can see the opportunity of buying stock that has been temporarily discounted by this panic. This flu is new, but it is no more dangerous than most strains that appear every year. This isn't the Spanish Flu revisited.

#21 | POSTED BY DOCNJO

That took five seconds to look up and debunk.

No it is not the Spanish Flu. It has a different name. But it is a deadly flu. Just like the Spanish flu was.

And it is a pandemic flu. Not a regular seasonal flu.

Just like the Spanish flu was.

It is just as dangerous as the Spanish Flu was. But it just so happens we do have better medical care these days. So I do not expect as many deaths. But we still do not know how many will die. But many will die. Many have already died.

From www.preparemetrokc.org

"Pandemic flu is different and can be much worse. It can cause a worldwide outbreak of a new form of flu virus, which spreads easily from person to person because they have no immunity. Pandemic flu occurs when a flu virus goes through changes (called "mutations") that create a new virus the body has never encountered."

#22 | Posted by donnerboy at 2020-02-25 10:55 AM | Reply

#22 | Posted by donnerboy With a mortality rate of 2%, even where medical care is marginal, it isn't as dangerous as the than the three other pandemic flu in the last century. Considering that a virus divides and multiplies faster than cellular life, the chance of mutation is always a concern, but it hasn't happened yet.

#23 | Posted by docnjo at 2020-02-25 11:15 AM | Reply

I get that the virus is a problem. But I don't quite understand how pulling our money out of our mutual funds is going to stop us from getting it.

I am still waiting for the repubs to declare that getting rid of the country's pandemic response group to be stupid. Did fox news tell you that trump had done that? Probably not.

foreignpolicy.com

"For the United States, the answers are especially worrying because the government has intentionally rendered itself incapable. In 2018, the Trump administration fired the government's entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. "

Except it's completely novel with no existing immunity in the population. 2-2.5% lethality rate is a LOT of people when there's no immunity present.

Major difference with Spanish influenza is this (so far...) doesn't cause severe disease in healthy young and middle aged patients. Social disruption is a primary concern, though, as evidenced by the thread we're commenting on and the difficulty finding any sort of face mask in any sort of hardware/drug/big box store.

#23 | Posted by docnjo

Viral mutation has nothing to do with the rate of replication and yes, it does mutate when it replicates because that's what RNA viruses do.

We won't see a shift until there's significant enough level of immunity in the population to exert a selective pressure.

Irag and Docnjo must have listened to Rush Limburger yesterday. Rush also said this is really no big deal, claiming the panic is being ginned up to make Trump look bad.

If that's the case, Trump will need to start firing everyone at his own CDC. From a CDC press call today: "Disruption to everyday life mightbe severe," says Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. She said she told her children this morning, "While I didn't think they were at risk right now, we as a family ought to be preparing for significant disruptionto our lives."

Fortunately for us, Trump has not had to deal with any real emergency situation during his presidency. He and Fox News have created some fake existential threats (remember "the caravan"?) but there has been nothing that really put American lives at risk (if you don't count Puerto Ricans as Americans .... and Republicans don't).

I hoped we would get out of the Trump fiasco without a real emergency. I feared some international crisis would emerge that he would be completely incompetent to handle. I didn't expect it to be a potential pandemic. But, here we are. He's talking about Ebola for some reason and about miraculous cures due to warm weather and his lackeys are saying the virus is "contained." Meanwhile, the virus is spreading like wildfire and it's fatality rate is much higher than influenza.

If many Americans start getting sick I think it has the potential to be the one thing that MIGHT turn some of Trump's cult against him. Murdering someone on 5th Avenue won't do it. Sickness and death might. It should have never come to this.

You Trump supporters should be ashamed of yourselves. You built this.

Listen I love a good Trump pile on as much as the next guy and you are right if he gets credit for the market going up he gets credit for it going down as well. However I can't give him too much grief for the handling of the overall crisis. While not stellar given that he's not a microbiologist to lock himself int he oval office and create a cure his handling has been adequate and about expected from a president.

LOL I don't think that that is a widely known fact, certainly not one Trump would have known or been told.

It was tongue in cheek to illustrate the absurdity of his statement.

He and likely his advisers are so ignorant they think it's the heat that "kills" the virus as opposed to the break in winter weather (in the northern hemisphere at least...which leads to a whole different set of absurdity layers) and the corresponding break in constant, close indoors contact.
