A university in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has opened a 2,600-square-foot-facility for hands-on experience and research related to the cannabis industry.

The Mining Journal reports that the ribbon cutting for Lake Superior State University's Cannabis Center of Excellence was Friday.

University officials say the idea is to train undergraduate students as "job-ready chemists" with' "innovative experience." The school announced a cannabis chemistry program last year.

Michigan allows marijuana for medicinal and recreational use, which became legal in December.

Note that when I was in engineering school (1965-71), this school was a branch campus of my alma mater (I attended the main campus) but about 40 years or so ago it was split off by the state and was chartered as it's own state university. Today, Lake Superior State University has about 2,000 students and is the smallest fully accredited public university in the State of Michigan (maybe this will help boost enrollment).

That being said, I'll bet the lab assignments are meticulously performed by the students ;-)
