President Donald Trump addressed a massive public rally early Monday in India, where he showered the country and its prime minister with praise -- but repeatedly struggled with his pronunciation.

He struggles with enunciation, again, because his neurological state worsens.

Give be a break. Can you pronounce Ahmedabad and Vivekananda, Rcade? I'll bet if he was an illegal alien mispronouncing "where do I find immigration papers" you'd have no problem.

I'll bet you saw no issue with JFK referred to himself as a breakfast pastry in Berlin because he was not a fluent German speaker

It has been said before:. Trump is a big enough ---- up that there are worthy stories to talk about. Not being able to pronounce words in a fine language is not one of those things.

#3 | Posted by goatman at 2020-02-25 08:42 AM | Reply

He did not 'mispronounce' any words, Shart. He absolutely mangled them.

And now I respect him more. LOL

This one should have been easy not to mispronounce:

and called the Vedas--ancient Hindu religious texts--"Vestas."

I think a problem is that both Urdu and Hindi... both of which are based on Sanskrit (in Urdu's case, it's Sanskrit + Persian)... are not pronounced as they are written in the English alphabet. The english alphabet isn't large enough so it approximates a sound leaving a non-speaker to guess.

For example a simple sentence..... Mera nam Cripple hai. (my name Cripple, is)

May-Raa

Nam (am like in "aaaaa" when doc sez open wide, not like in "I am")

Hai (ai like the a in apple)

Not so obvious was it?

But Trump should have been briefed and he should have practiced. What went wrong?

Glad Der Dotard didn't rehearse, didn't practice, didn't prepare. One wouldn't want him to come off sounding...prepared, intelligent or respectful of his hosts...

Just like you, I know or have heard hundreds of ESL speakers who have 'practiced' for years and decades, yet still mispronounce English words.

Focus on the real issues. With Trump there are plenty.

My guess is that he thought he already knew all he needed to know.

Which is unfortunate.

Most US Presidents will at least try to learn the pronunciations so they they do not embarrass the United States as Pres Trump did.

Trump has a habit of mispronouncing English words and of strangely garbled speech at times. Is this video clip from a recent Trump rally Tweeter claims it is unedited, but I don't know. I hope someone investigates:

He could've asked someone for the proper pronunciations before giving the speech. He also could've practiced. But, he's a lazy, entitled POS who'd rather be playing golf or watching Fox News.

Trump is actually popular in India, I doubt his faux paw of mispronouncing names will effect that. There are about 16 languages spoken in India. Mispronouncing names is a fairly common occurrence. The Chinese would take it much more seriously.

Trump Speaks to Massive Indian Crowd, Mispronounces Almost Everything

These public displays of stupidity are totally avoidable. It demonstrates to the world, Trump's contempt for his hosts. There was no reason he couldn't have spent sufficient time prepping for his speech to learn the proper pronunciation of words.

A few years ago, Fat Fanta said "I love Hindu"... which did not make sense at the time... but now it does. He was already planning how to misuse language to insult them on their home turf.

It's just a cheap thrill for him. Maybe a bit more than "grab 'em by the #%&$*".
