Bernie Sanders says he's the Democrat best-equipped to defeat Donald Trump in November. But Florida Democrats insist hes the worst-equipped after Sanders' refusal Sunday night to thoroughly condemn the Cuban revolution. His comments on 60 Minutes sent shock waves through the nation's biggest battleground state, where Democratic members of Congress, state legislators and party leaders warned that his nomination "- and Sanders' self-described "Democratic socialism" "- will cost them the biggest battleground state of them all.

"Donald Trump wins Florida if Bernie is our nominee," said state Rep. Javier Fernandez, a Democratic candidate in a majority-Hispanic state Senate district. "If Bernie Sanders is atop the ticket, it's going to make it tougher for all of us to win in Florida," said Fernandez, who has endorsed Sanders' rival Joe Biden. "No one really sees Sanders winning Florida and I don't think his campaign does either."

This may be overstating things, but I think that Bernie needs to address this otherwise he may have written Florida off.

I will, of course, love to hear from Corky, Danni, Rogers etc., as Floridians, on their take here.

Not overstated at all. All one has to do is to remember those long nights of vote counts in Dade and Broward counties in S Florida... and the lingering hatred for Castro by ex-pats there.

Not to mention the Brooks Bros Riot....

"Roger Stone is one of the last guys on Earth one would expect to feel guilty over an episode of rough and tumble politicking. As a self-admitted hit man for the GOP, Stone has had a hand in everything from Nixon's dirty tricks to Eliot Spitzer's resignation to spreading discredited rumors of a Michelle Obama " whitey" tape during the 2008 Democratic primaries. You might call Stone the Forrest Gump of scandal, popping up to play a bit part in the most notorious negative campaigns in recent history.

The capstone of Stone's career, at least in terms of results, was the "Brooks Brothers riot" of the 2000 election recount. This was when a Stone-led squad of pro-Bush protestors stormed the Miami-Dade County election board, stopping the recount and advancing then-Governor George W. Bush one step closer to the White House. Though he is quick to rebut GOP operatives who seek to minimize his role in the recount, Stone lately has been having second thoughts about what happened in Florida."

I'm thinking this will probably be the first of a series of such misstatements as the campaign progresses and heats up. Sen Sanders is a long-time campaigner, he should not have the "mis-speak" problem at this point in his career.

Thank you for posting those links, I had forgotten about the Stone-led Brooks Brothers Riots that led to Shrub.

My wife, who has relatives in Cuba, couldn't believe he said that and her Mother, who lives in South Beach, was particularly pissed about these comments so you may be right about the effect not being exaggerated by the article.

This is just the start.

Sanders is going to get clobbered over Cuba, the Sandinistas, that frigging Moscow subway, etc.

He'll be spewing politically lethal fallout like a veritable Chernobyl by convention time.

And then, after he's got the nomination, the Republican smear machine will crank into high gear.

I'm afraid that Sanders is the wrong man at the wrong time.

This also describes Trump, however, and he got elected.

Posted in another thread, but I really hope Bernie does this:

Dear Bernie, I have faith in your empathy and listening ability, which you have demonstrated in the past when you spoke with coal-miners in KY and WV. e.g. Please do a listening tour of Hispanic voters in South Florida, and stop doing this unnecessary damage to your campaign.

#7 Yes, I believe if Bernie met with these folks it would have an impact on him:

leana Ros-Lehtinen @RosLehtinen

Yeah, Bernie "truth is truth", as u say, and the "truth" is that Fidel Castro was, from the 1st day he illegally took power, a ruthless murderer, a sadistic killer who stripped Cubans of all freedoms.
Literacy programs were indoctrination.
I lived it as a child.
All lies.

Ana Navarro-Crdenas @ananavarro

Castro regime's been in power in Cuba for +60 yrs w/o free elections. They've killed, jailed, tortured thousands. They confiscated assets, expelled priests & nuns... And let's be clear, Cubans weren't exactly communicating by grunts. Most knew how to read.
I was in 2nd Grade when Sandinistas came to power in Nicaragua. They adopted Cuban education model. The books/curriculum taught ideological indoctrination. Children had to recite communist, revolutionary, anti-American slogans. That's how communist teach people to read and write.
FLA is home to many victims of Castros, Sandinistas, Maduro. I have friends whose dads were jailed, tortured, killed. I know Political Prisoners carrying physical & emotional scars. It's an open wound for many of us.
@BernieSanders should meet w/victims to understand the pain.

I'm not interested in the squabbles between Sanders and the DNC.
That's party stuff, although it's a tad ironic the guy isn't even a member of the party.
Nope, what concerns me is the damage he will do by assisting Trump.
Bernie's accustomed to playing the Useful Idiot at times...this Cuba stuff is just the tip of the iceberg...so he'll doubtless see this as a matter of principle.
If his babbling about dictatorial left-wing regimes doesn't sink him, his musings about health care ought to do the trick.
As for this "will of the public stuff," yeah, right.
Sanders represents one slice of the many slices (constituencies) in the party.
One aspect of the electorate, which is composed of a number of groups.
And he's done ------- to convince the other constituencies that he's got much on offer for them that he can explain coherently and in which they evidence interest.
If he and his acolytes weren't so goddamn self-righteous the nose-holding might be a tad easier.

#10 You can't have it both ways. He is portrayed as the uncompromising, uncaring, ideologue by the Bernie Bros. Nobody's showed he's anything but that.

How odd the Democrats have let Bernie primary with them, twice.

You should tell them he's not blue enough for you.

what concerns me is the damage he will do by assisting Trump.

By pulling a Hillary? She lost the general election and screwed over down ticket politicians. She was instrumental in handing all three branches of the government to the GOP.

But. By all means. Let's do it your way, again.

We'll figure out how to fix the damage done by Trump in 2024.

Yet he's still winning the primaries.

So?

I love it how people think the primaries mean anything more than what a fraction of Dem voters think.

Means absolutely nothing in the general.

We'll figure out how to fix the damage done by Trump in 2024.

Sans Bernie it probably wouldn't have been necessary.

But Bernie and "Progressives" are too dense to see the writing on the wall.

I was disappointed Bernie was stuck on his talking points about Castro. He deserved the barb Mayor Pete threw his way:

You can't "Look at the bright side of the Castro regime."

Summary seen on the internet of tonight's debate:

Sans Bernie it probably wouldn't have been necessary.

Why? Is he spoiling Hillary's chance of winning in 2020?

Biden is a failure, he sank faster than a turd in a punch bowl.

Warren is a more palatable version of Bernie for people who think Bernie is to extreme. I'd be happy to vote for her, but she's not winning in the primaries.

Pete is great, smart, military, young, moderate. Black people seem not to like him, won't get out to vote for him. Homophobes don't like him, won't go out to vote for him. Maybe in a presidential cycle or two he can fix his image and get in better graces with black people. Regardless, I'd be happy to vote for him now. But he's not winning the primaries.

Klobuchar, I don't know too well. She seems good enough. I'd vote for her. But she's, not, winning, primaries.

Bloomberg is a Fffking REPUBLICAN. You know when liberals say America is moving further right, politically, and Hillary, Obama, and Bill were all pretty much right of center. Well. In response. It seems like the DNC decided an actual Republican should be allowed to run for Democratic Nominee.

You know how some people say they won't vote for Bernie because he's a socialist. A lot of liberals I know don't want to vote for Bloomberg because he's a Republican.

The difference being. Bernie is actually winning the primaries.

So. Who are you voting for?

From the world of realpolitik:

Bernie Sanders looks electable in surveys " but it could be a mirage
New research suggests Sanders would drive swing voters to Trump " and need a youth turnout miracle to compensate.

Anybody but Trump.

I'm not the one to worry about.

It's the folks in states like WI, MI, PA, OH ect that are going to either stay home or hold their nose and vote Trump when Bernie is the candidate.

It's gonna be a blood bath when Bernie is the candidate and that's only going to embolden Trump further.

It has played very, very poorly with Cuba. It boils down to whataboutism.

Pretty much everybody: "Castro was a ruthless tyrant that used Communism to build a corrupt oligarchy."

Bernie: "but he had a great literacy program!"

... not going to go down well in Ybor.

#23 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2020-02-27 07:53 AM | Reply

Culturally, Cubans in Ybor prided themselves on their own education initiatives. The factories were more like family unions than you could imagine. They had daily speakers at the lectern keeping workers informed and helping them obtain english literacy.

It sucks for Bernie, but I respect him for standing for his values, even if I don't agree with them. It's much better than a phony like Hillary who sticks her finger in the air and tells her audience whatever they want to hear -- even if it is contradictory to what she said the day before.

Winning doesn't mean you're not ideologically blinded.

Sander's briefly tied No Majority in the odds. Now the odds favor No Majority again, 1 in 2 odds. That's from the firm closest to the Trump-Hillary results, giving Hillary a 70% chance to win, when the media went with the 99% Hillary narrative.

Statistics on it are compiled, edited, and published by the State.
