Robert B. Reich: Right after Sen. Bernie Sanders's big win in last week's Nevada caucuses, Joe Lockhart, President Bill Clinton's former press secretary, expressed the fear gripping the Democratic establishment in an op-ed for CNN: "I don't believe the country is prepared to support a Democratic socialist, and I agree with the theory that Sanders would lose in a matchup against Trump." Like much of the party establishment, he is viewing American politics through outmoded lenses of left versus right, with Sanders (I-Vt.) on the far left and President Trump on the far right.

BS Sanders is a brand killer.

His initials are B.S. But that's his parents's fault.

Reich's opinion on this is spot on.

We're not going to beat the plutocracy if we keep electing plutocrats.

"Trump's populist pose, of course, was one of the biggest cons in American political history. Since his election he has given the denizens of C-suites and boardrooms almost everything they've wanted and hasn't markedly improved the lives of his working-class supporters, even if his politically incorrect, in-your-face style continues to make many feel as if he's taking on the system.

The best way for Democrats to defeat Trump's fake populism is with the real thing, coupled with an agenda of systemic reform. This is what Sanders offers. For that reason, he has the best chance of generating the energy and enthusiasm needed to regain the White House.

In a general election, Republicans would surely do everything they can to tag Sanders with the "socialist" label. But that hasn't hurt him so far, partly because it doesn't come with the stigma it once did."

It's a short article and a good read... and I would like to agree with Reich as often as possible, but this recent poll just doesn't agree.

"Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is rising in the polls among Democrats, but questions about his electability against President Trump persist because he self-identifies as a democratic socialist.

A new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll backs up the idea that the label could hurt him.

Asked about their impression of socialism, 28% of adults said they have a favorable view, while 58% said they had an unfavorable one.

If socialism is so unpopular with Americans, how can Sanders be on the rise in the Democratic primary?

Because Democrats and, more specifically, progressives view socialism favorably. Half of Democrats said so, while more than two-thirds of progressives did.

Just 23% of independents, though, and 7% of Republicans viewed socialism favorably.Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is rising in the polls among Democrats, but questions about his electability against President Trump persist because he self-identifies as a democratic socialist.

Republicans are 1984 good at manipulating perception in a low news savvy electorate. While activists know better, this Red Scare!! tactic, like we see here daily from Trump trolls will be difficult to overcome... especially if one is depending on the mercurial presence of young voters in general elections.

Nah, to defeat a rich sexist racist you obviously need to nominate a rich sexist racist (Bloomberg). Then everyone can be racist and sexist as one in harmony with each other.

Whatever one does, don't listen to the same people who promoted 2016's big fat loser who fumbled against Trump. They should have to sit out of this year's nominating process.

Robert Reich is smarter than you in any subject, by any measurable metric.

And you will never achieve what he has, nobody important will ever give a --- about anything you say.

So, there's that.

is this the first time a registered "Independent" would become the Dem nominee?

i thought you had to be a registered Democrat to become a Democrat nominee

Sanders has a VERY low ceiling. Against Trump that might be enough but he's hardly a "safe" candidate.

When Reich said Bernie folks should support Hillary, then work on a 3rd party to keep the movement going, he wasn't wrong. This won't end particularly well.

They should convert the DSA into a party and merge the Green Party into it.

Bernie Sanders is an FDR Democrat.

The Republicans have genuinely become the Party of the plutocrats. The Democrats are obsessed with self preservation. Bernie Sanders is one of the few people that seems to care about everyone else.

If the Democrats aren't willing to stand up and lead on the things that are best for ALL the American people, this country is truly lost.

The democratic party doesn't realize yet that is really two parties. After the huuuuuge loss in November it will be even more apparent to them. By 2024 it will all be over but the crying for the donkey party.

If that's true, can we expect a National Socialist candidate to soon run alongside a Democratic Socialist?

Is fascist a term that should no longer scare people?

Bernie isn't being vetted very well by the Dems. Donald will be trotting out a lot of stuff in the general election and no Sanders supporters have anything to say about it.

Then again, Trump won despite all the bad stuff. Maybe Bernie will win and tax us all into oblivion for his great experiment.

Sanders vs. Trump would be entertaining! I encourage Republicans and Independents in an open primary State where the Republicans have canceled the primary (e.g. South Carolina) to get out there and vote Sanders. Make Politics Entertaining Again!
