In a secure facility underneath the Capitol, members of Congress stopped by all last week to review two classified annexes to the Afghan peace accord with the Taliban that set the criteria for a critical element of the agreement: What constitutes enough "peace" for the United States to withdraw its forces?

"What constitutes enough "peace" for the United States to withdraw its forces?"

Depends.
Is it an election year? Is the GOP in charge?
Then the GOP will Cut N Run and Declare Victory.

Based on the Kurds it will be unconditional surrender and throwing allies under a bus, then hide the deal and lie about it.

It certainly could be argued that's what they did under Bush in Iraq. I do agree with not subjecting our troops there to local law enforcement though I'm not sure that was necessary.

"I do agree with not subjecting our troops there to local law enforcement"

Really, you think our troops should be above the law?
How about police here in America, you think that's the way to go? Exempt them from local laws too?

I mean, I can see why it's a deal breaker, for both sides.

It's because of people like that psychopath Navy SEAL guy Trump pardoned, for both sides.

No. NOT what I said at all. Our troops are sent where they are told. They don't have a choice. In places where corruption is rampant like Iraq and Afghanistan that isn't good. I think they should face military discipline.

Pardon means he accepts he was guilty. He avoided being found guilty of the worst charges. I tend to believe the troops in this case.

Truth is, I'm fine with that.

But, again, that Navy SEAL explains 100% why that's unacceptable, if you're an Iraqi.

I get what you are saying. And someone sliding a few thousand to a corrupt official to get off isn't acceptable either. Just as our justice system was intended though - I would rather see the guilty walk free occasionally than the innocent locked up or worse.

When it really comes down to it how do you think a US serviceman would do in a jail or prison in a place like Iraq or Afghanistan? Especially if locked up for something petty.

That's one way of looking at it.
Another is, what it really comes down to is a military that can't keep its troops from doing something petty.

I don't agree troops should have the functional equivalent of diplomatic immunity.

130 Americans a day are dying at the hands of the Taliban.

Not our law, no.

But we should not be subject to local laws.

Actually, you should if you go around murdering people. That's "murdering," as in, oh, Eddie Gallagher. Put a punk like him in an Afghan courtroom and watch some folks' manners start improving..

Damn, we're not going to get 100 years in Afghanistan? There goes my afghani mineral futures. So many heavy metals. The area just has to be sterilized..

That's the problem with you liberals. Always concentrating on the wrong thing. How about concentrating on the "manners" of the Taliban?

Dude, if we are invading any country there will always be a Taliban. Trick is to not invade countries.

You live off the taxpayers dime because you worked for a company whose function was to protect the nation from "enemies". You've lost every war since WW2... and for the past several years 130 Americans die per day at the hands of the Taliban because YOU and your team focus on the wrong thing.

therefore

Trumplethinskin is leaving office in disgrace.
