Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, March 20, 2020

On Wednesday, President Trump held another grim press conference to inform the public he was deploying wartime powers to fight the impending coronavirus threat. Several members of the White House press corps responded by squandering what little time available to them by lecturing the president about what they deem to be appropriate names for the virus.

"If we must have an absurd debate on whether it's racist to refer to the Chinese virus,' fine, but is it too much to ask that purportedly objective reporters not take a side in that debate?" asked National Review editor Rich Lowry. "Judging from today's press conference the answer is, Yes, of course it's too much to ask.'"

What's particularly obnoxious about the press's desire to force this debate is that it falls right in line with the Chinese government's propaganda campaign...

The amazing thing is the Koreans did what Trump sure seems like he wanted to do.
They ramped up domestic production of test kits; they didn't rely to the WHO.
They approached this crisis through government investment in the private sector, combined with waived regulations to amplify the stimulated demand.

Saying that we shouldn't call it the Chinese Virus is not defending China. It's saying we shouldn't smear a billion people just because the virus started in their geographic location.

Bold section is farking hilarious.

Why? Because China is not the biggest problem with this. They botched the early response and so did Trump. Both opportunities were squandered and both were known to be a problem when they were squandered. Trump's more so than the Chinese who were very much early enough to be less sure. At least you admitted it's pointless in regards to mitigating disease spread in the US.

Let's get through at least the first wave and once our medical system is no longer in danger of being overloaded with critical care patients we can discuss it until the cows come home. We can have as many or more threads on the DR for that very discussion.

But until then, do try and at least accurately represent what I'm saying.

Intelligence agencies "have been warning on this since January," said a U.S. official who had access to intelligence reporting that was disseminated to members of Congress and their staffs as well as to officials in the Trump administration, and who, along with others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive information.

"Donald Trump may not have been expecting this, but a lot of other people in the government were " they just couldn't get him to do anything about it," this official said. "The system was blinking red."

The warnings from U.S. intelligence agencies increased in volume toward the end of January and into early February, said officials familiar with the reports. By then, a majority of the intelligence reporting included in daily briefing papers and digests from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the CIA was about covid-19, said officials who have read the reports.

Not China's fault.

And if anyone wants to question the anonymous sourcing, take Sen. Burr's own recorded words as verification of what he was told privately by these same agencies.

It didn't matter what China did in December as it regards what the US didn't do in January and February that would have made a huge difference in the disease's effects today and moving forward.

Yet another twisting of reality to avoid blaming President Zero for his own actions. Not it is NOT that ---- will end up rising to impact him. HIS actions are wrong, plain and simple. He bears 100% of the blame for how things are playing out here.

The funny thing is he could have used this to his advantage, if he had character or a wit of intelligence. Americans would have rallied around him in January and February if he would have taken it seriously and soberly instead of with ignorant short sightedness. In times of crisis like this Americans look to their leaders for guidance and, well, leadership.

---- even Dubya, after 9/11 didn't respond to a reporter asking for solace for a scared populace by saying that was nasty!

What this tells me is that President Zero is scared, ----less.

Well, well, well. Color me not surprised. It wasn't/isn't the US media doing China's bidding, it was our President, Donald Trump that actually believed President Xi's assertions that China had the virus under control instead of listening to our own government agencies who were trying to warn him that Xi was lying and that the pandemic would likely wreak havoc in the US once it inevitably got here.

Trump's insistence on the contrary seemed to rest in his relationship with China's President Xi Jingping, whom Trump believed was providing him with reliable information about how the virus was spreading in China, despite reports from intelligence agencies that Chinese officials were not being candid about the true scale of the crisis.

Some of Trump's advisers told him that Beijing was not providing accurate numbers of people who were infected or who had died, according to administration officials. Rather than press China to be more forthcoming, Trump publicly praised its response.

"China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus," Trump tweeted Jan. 24. "The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!"

Some of Trump's advisers encouraged him to be tougher on China over its decision not to allow teams from the CDC into the country, administration officials said.

In one February meeting, the president said that if he struck a tougher tone against Xi, the Chinese would be less willing to give the Americans information about how they were tackling the outbreak.

Explain how it's a deflection Jeff. Trump himself publicly announced what Xi was telling him (China has everything under control) which countered what our own intelligence agencies were telling him, namely that Xi was both lying and downplaying how severe the crisis was inside China.

Don't know how the truth is a deflection, so I'll await your reply.

It's a deflection because the thread subject is the media echoing China propaganda.

"Trump did it too!" is a deflection. Also, Trump's comment took place when we were just learning about the existence of CV. Now, 2 months later, some MSM outlets are echoing China propaganda as it's become known that they suppressed all info regarding this virus for 2 months enabling it to travel much of the globe in the process.

Jeff, you really have lost all sense of perspective. The title of this thread is "Biased Press Does China's Bidding on COVID-19."

That happened this week. Trump himself did China's bidding in January, and by doing so ignored the very government entities entrusted with providing the President with the best and most timely information available. Trump's decision kept the federal government from being better prepared and now an untold number of American citizens and our economy will suffer because of it.

I guess I see how you can rightly claim this news is a deflection, but your point is so insignificant in comparison to Trump's actions and the price our society is and will pay for his ego and paranoia.

It's usually far more specific than a geographical region.

Marburg virus for Marburg, Germany.

West Nile for West Nile province of Uganda.

Hantavirus for Hantan River, South Korea.

Coxsackievirus for Coxsackie, NY.

The only two I can think of off the top of my head that are that broad in their description are Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and African swine fever virus.

Which is why I've slipped myself and called it Wuhan virus. Seems like a logical name given the normal conventions.

Yav,

A couple of things are happening simultaneously.

1. Trump is absolutely trying to shift blame to take the light off his administration's slow and incompetent initial reaction to this (setting aside the travel restrictions out of China at the end of January). Trump is an excuse-driven moron and is pretty fricking far from being 'the buck stops here' kind of president. I wholly agree with that aspect of your criticism of him and I think that this is something that may well sink his re-election chances.

2. China suppressed this for 2 months and disappeared the brave whistleblowers who brought this to light. Countless media outlets referred to this as the W-word corona virus in January and February. It wasn't until the CCP floated the insipid lie that our military was responsible for this did Trump start calling it the China virus. Amazingly, after weeks of calling it the W-word virus our media began parroting CCP propaganda and all of a sudden that term is now racist. Why is our media co-opting CCP propaganda? Seriously, why? Did you think W-word coronavirus was a racist term before Trump started using it? Seriously, I would love for you to answer that. Bottom line is this: This is a global Pandemic because of the actions of the government of China. Period, full stop. Pointing out that obvious fact in no way exonerates how the Trump administration responded to this. It's sad that I even have to explain this, but here we are.

Did they not float the lie that our military planted the virus in Wuhan?

Did our media not refer to it as the W-word coronavirus until Trump started using the term in response to China accusing our military?

Did our media not change its tune regarding the W-word immediately after the CCP condemned the term?

Is this NOT a global pandemic due to China's actions?

Or did you take umbrage with my comment that despite the fact that China is the reason that this is a global pandemic it in no way exonerates how poorly the Trump administration handled this in the early weeks? That must be it. :-)

#133 | Posted by JeffJ at 2020-03-21 12:38 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

Fine, Jeff.

1) China supressed. True. Initially and did horrible. Terrible. They were ground zero for this one.
NOTE: The US supressed, the President lied, Fox News lied, Called the concerns about it a "Democrat Hoax." The US is still making ---- up and lying.
2) The doctor that first reported it wasn't disappeared, he was arrested, wrongly, horribly, by a government that was worried about this disease making them look bad. Like the Republicans were. Like Trump was and is. That doctor is now a hero in China. Revered.
3) It was called Wuhan because that's where the outbreak originated Not "Chinese."
4) The CDC and WHO accurately characterized it as a Coronavirus and gave it the name Novel Coronavirus. Now a known, the media started using that term.
5) What CCP propaganda was ever repeated by the media? All you or this article cite is the name, for goodness sake. How genuinely pathetic and stupid.
6) This is a global pandemic because people and governments across the globe didn't take it serious and didn't prepare for it. That includes Trump, Fox News, Republican "news" outlets, and more. We sure as hell saw this coming months in advance, and we did nothing. And it hit. And now you and the Republicans want to blame China and are offended because people won't call it the "Chinese virus?" That's what you are upset about?

I could go on and on.

BTW, using a country's name doesn't make something racist. German measles was named for the Scientists (Germans) that discovered it.

If you want to know is something is racist, ask yourself why did someone say that was racist? Then use a dictionary and look up the word.
racist | resst |
adjective
prejudiced against or antagonistic towards a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized: we are investigating complaints about racist abuse.

Now tell me what you honestly think about Trump crossing out "Corona," the actual name of the type of virus, and putting "Chinese" in instead, was all about? Was it to be antagonistic towards the Chinese?

That's why "racist" fits.

It's a global pandemic because of the actions of China. Period. It's spread in the US is worse than it should have been due to the inactions of the Trump administration. It was already on our shores and had been for weeks before we were even aware of it.

And now you and the Republicans want to blame China and are offended because people won't call it the "Chinese virus?" That's what you are upset about?

Jeff.

The coronavirus, aka COVID19, started in Wuhan, China.

The Chinese did what they always do, and suppressed the information. Which lead to Chinese people traveling around the world and spreading the virus.

We can all agree on the above.

Here's the part that matters to most Americans.

When news of the virus was first available, and the impact it would have was being reported, Trump called the news a Democratic hoax. Not the virus, the impact. Rather than take any measures, he chose to downplay it, to spread disinformation, which Trumpublicans took to heart. They still believe his message, that the reports of this virus are overblown. To exasperate the situation, the people who were supposed to deal with this kinda of stuff had been laid off.

Which brings us to now. Where your biggest concern is making sure China is blamed. They're already held as the responsible party.

What more does blaming China do for us? Does it makes Trump's failed responses any better? Does it remove the disinformation Trump, his administration, and republicans are spreading? Do you want to go to war with China?

What's you're goal, Jeff?

To make sure the truth doesn't get lost in all of the political spin.

By continuing to try and turn a pandemic into a political partisan divide?

Interesting strategy I must say. Kinda deplorable tho.

You know there is much blame to share and there will be plenty of time for assigning blame and liabilities.

After we put out the fires.

China is already trying to seek redemption by making it right with the world by sending help to those in need.

When will Trump (and his deplorables) stop with the excuses and start trying to make it right with Americans and the world?

Oh, it's all so clear now!
You spent last week calling it the Dos Equis virus...

This is laughable, try listening to one of the daily briefings, especially reporters questions.

China is already trying to seek redemption by making it right with the world by sending help to those in need.

How about not sending the virus itself?

How about after how many exotic wet market virus pandemics they shut down the exotic animal eating? Is that too much to ask?

Instead you support them by claiming "here's a virus for your populace, and here's stuff we have been hording to help" is moral.

Not that you'll ever figure it out.

There are times when the level of true idiocy you are able to produce actually stuns me. That entire #146 posting is one of those times.

Ummm isn't that exactly why we don't want to call this the Chinese flu ? Because back when America was "Great" we made the mistake of calling it the "Spanish" flu and and as a result again?

If this were then Deplorables would assume this was because the sickness had originated in Spain and was somehow their fault for being Spanish or something.

But it actually originated on the Iberian Peninsula, but the nickname was actually the result of a widespread misunderstanding. Promoted and spread by Prehistoric Trumptilians no doubt!

It was spreading propaganda. Just like Trumpy is trying to do. But you knew that. Right?

"The major countries involved in the war were keen to avoid encouraging their enemies, so reports of the extent of the flu were suppressed in Germany, Austria, France, the United Kingdom and the U.S. By contrast, neutral Spain had no need to keep the flu under wraps. That created the false impression that Spain was bearing the brunt of the disease."

Something got cut.

And as a result Spain has been misunderstood to be the origin of the "Spanish flu".

In related news, Andrea, a mattress has teamed up with Swastika Rehabitatin' Sentinel to bring relief those poor maligned Germans who suffer every time we call those little brown cockroaches:

German cockroaches.

P.S. you know what they call German cockroaches in Germany? Italian cockroaches.

P.P.S. Calling it "Lyme disease" is a microaggression against Limeys.

Exactly.

While I'm at it, the Black Plague?

Black Plague (actually "Black Death") was named because of the color lymph nodes turned when infected.
I have no idea what Mackris was even trying to do by using that one as an example of god-knows-what.

I already did in another thread.

It's been convention for a long time to name viruses after the place of their initial isolation.

Which is why I catch myself calling this Wuhan virus.

But "Chy-Nuh" virus isn't what it would be. Nor is it the name that's been designated, which is SARS-CoV-2.

That's why Trump's behavior and the falling in line of his sycophants is so pathetic.

It's NOT the name of the virus. Period. Stop making a stupid argument when there's nothing to argue about.
