Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, March 20, 2020

The coronavirus has infected far more people in the United States than testing has shown so far, and stringent measures to limit social contact in parts of the country not yet seeing many cases are needed to significantly stem the tide of illness and death in the coming months. Those are the conclusions of Columbia University researchers who used a New York Times database of known cases and Census Bureau transportation data to model how the outbreak could evolve based on what is known about the virus. The estimates are inherently uncertain, and they could change as America adopts unprecedented measures to control the outbreak. But they offer a stark warning: Even if the country cut its rate of transmission in half " a tall order " some 650,000 people might become infected in the next two months.

"The growth is driven by Americans with mild symptoms who are carrying and spreading the virus without being aware that they have it, the researchers say. The number of undetected cases " 11 times more than has been officially reported, they estimate " reflects how far behind the United States has fallen in testing for the virus."

But there is hope if everyone takes measures to stop it.

@#2 ... The number of undetected cases ...

This aspect, though I don't necessarily agree with the numbers you cite, is one of the main reasons why I think Pres Trump intentionally stymied testing effortsin the United States.

Stated simply, he does not want to see numbers he does not like.

Just like he does not want aides to tell him informaiton he does not like.

As I mentioned in anoother comment, we, the People of the United States, are currently undergoing two crises.

- the COVID-19 crisis
- the Oval Office leadership crisis

I am not saying it won't be bad.

But we need to see how this plays out, keep out distancing.

The sky is falling

Please, he can't hide it.

If there are 11X the numbers they aren't causing issues, like burdening the healthcare system, and possibly it would drive down the mortality rate into the standard flu numbers.

There is no reason to hide the numbers. The testing is picking up the numbers go up, expect the death rate to drop.

My concern is the European strain, if more it is a more virulent strain, it hitting America. Ruins my Sailing in Croatia this summer ...

God Bless Trump for cutting that cord, and the China link early on. Saved thousands.

Is there anything you haven't asked God to bless Trump for?

Yes

The only thing keeping me from thinking that President Zero's response was all calculated to create a huge crisis so that he could call off the November election is his incompetence and stupidity. Though I strongly suspect he did a lot of what he did to short the markets.

He squandered the time that was bought by that action and did nothing to get ready for what the inevitable. Now we're scrambling and doing all we can to flatten the wave after he and the right-wing press convinced their followers that this is nothing but a hoax.

We knew this was coming. Our Intelligence Agencies were warning him of it back to January 3rd.

He hasn't saved anyone yet.

Nonsense.

It simply delayed it's introduction to and spread within the US population.

His one trick pony "Chy-Nuh", denial and ignorance was a one two punch that we're just starting to reel from.

And didn't ban flights from Europe for another 6 weeks.

People who wanted to avoid the China flights ban simply routed themselves through European airports.

No testing upon arrival in the U.S. No temperature checks, nada.

I just flew into Portland, then Eugene from Maui with no checks, and there was an outbreak in Lahaina.

My wife and I both wore masks the entire time.

That's why this isn't going to diminish soon, but grow exponentially. Too much movement around the country and no measures taken at airports to even question whether or not they've been in an area with cases, as you were.

How hard would it be to have a questionnaire for people to fill out before landing? Listing location where they were checked against a database of where there are reported cases. Someone says 'yes' and they at least get their temperature taken and handed a sheet highly recommending they sequester themselves to see if there's an onset of symptoms.

Hope you stay well :-)

I and my co-workers travel a lot for work. Everything has been stopped now, but I wouldn't be surprised if I were one of those who had been a passive carrier. Travelling between Europe and the US goes like this. Catch train to airport. Hit lounge. Get on plane. Double Bloody Mary. Wine. Sleep. Land. Hit lounge. Connect. Land. Rental car. Hotel. Double bloody Mary. Ambien. And then a few days later you do the whole thing in reverse. And you always feel like ----. You always feel like you have the flu. And you do this once every couple of weeks.

And in the past three weeks, I've been through FRA, JFK, BOS, MSP, and LAS. I'm pretty sure someone with COVID passed through one of those...not to mention that I was roaming around downtown Las Vegas on March 7th. Maybe pot smoke kills COVID.

Playing the blame game is not helpful now; it only plays into conspiracy theories about how this was intentional. There's plenty of time to sort things out after the emergency part is past.
