April 15-First US case of H1N1 detected April 25-WHO declares public health emergency April 26-US declares public health emergency and releases antiviral drugs from national stockpile April 28-FDA approves CDC test for H1N1; CDC releases guidelines recommending school closures May 1-CDC H1N1 tests ship June 11-WHO declares H1N1 a pandemic; CDC holds press conference July 22-clinical testing of H1N1 vaccine begins September 15-FDA approves vaccine October 5-first doses of H1N1 vaccine administered in US Late December-vaccination open to anybody who wants it You can continue reading the further response in 2010 if you'd like, but I think the point is clear. Obama did not did f--- up the H1N1 response. Trump is not doing a better job. Ten days went by from first case to emergency declaration and mobilization of US agencies. In less than a month tests were approved, produced and shipped for disease monitoring and public health experts. It took 2 months for Trump do some part of that.

Lie ...

First detected in March of 2009 in CA.

COX: Yes. The details that I have are that the earliest onset was March 28 and that the more recent ones are, I believe, April 19. That may not be accurate and on our Web site we will have the accurate information. But these are, you know, ranging from that early, that late March time line to quite a bit more recently.
www.cdc.gov

March to May it was in all 50 States.

Where was the shelter-in-place?

Did we have enough data to not care?

In February, as a first set of COVID-19 test kits sent out by the Center ..

On February 5th, sixteen days after a Seattle resident who had visited relatives in Wuhan, China, was diagnosed as having the first confirmed case of covid-19 in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control, in Atlanta, began sending diagnostic tests to a network of about a hundred state, city, and county public-health laboratories.
www.newyorker.com

Were there millions of test kits? Where millions of people being tested by Obama's CDC?

Gentlemens bet: More people will be tested in the next two weeks than the whole Obama H1N1 response.

Lie ...
First detected in March of 2009 in CA.

CDC timeline lists April 15th as first case detected in CA. Second one was April 17.

In February, as a first set of COVID-19 test kits sent out by the Center .

Of course you'd present this so shamelessly.

They were largely defective.

And we're still testing far too few and based on bad criteria of known contact with a positive case (for obvious reasons this is stupid) and being a traveler from a hotspot (even more obviously stupid).

Jan 30th CDC did the same thing

Meanwhile Trump went on TV saying everything was fine, not to worry about anything, don't stop shopping or do anything to make the stock market drop...

You are a lying POS, Jeff. There was never a time during the H1N1 pandemic that our healthcare system was predicted to become overwhelmed with patients unlike what is inevitable today. The final emergency declaration by Obama was given at the time the crisis dictated and at no time did the Obama government downplay the lethality of the pandemic, nor minimize how many people might be affected by it, and most importantly Obama never deferred to the states, the federal government provided whatever the states needed to the best of its ability.

States didn't shut down, the economy didn't stop, and no social distancing practices became widely promoted as are happening now. To even try to analogize these two pandemics as equal is disingenuous and downright ignorant.

But that's who you are these days. Everyone expects nothing from you but that.

With the poor response by the CDC under Obama, and Bill Gates excellent speech at Ted 2015.

When all else fails, make ----- up.

Gates is talking about global preparedness in that talk.

And many of the functions he talks about the US fulfilling were the objective of the NSC team and those who reported to it regarding foreign monitoring and disease defense.

In any case, you're a cheerleader for the administration that has tried to cut CDC and HHS funding every year. Luckily the GOP congress is smarter than Trump, but you still own that mentality exhibited by your favorite DOTUS.

Nothing upsets Tony more than any criticism of Obama.

You're not criticizing Obama for there's nothing to criticize him about.

You're just bald-faced lying, repeating right wing distortions that don't begin to tell the true story of events.

Answer me this: Did you ever see one single story throughout the domestic media where Obama EVER downplayed the scientifically calculated impact of H1N1 or ever tell Americans to just ignore its spread by implying that it would just "go away" causing reporters to write multiple stories like this?

In pro-Trump West Virginia, a fight to convince residents a pandemic is coming

For weeks, people here listened as Trump and conservative media dismissed the virus as a hoax. Many residents accused the state's Republican governor, Jim Justice, of overreacting when he closed the schools. "I think it's all B.S.," one local said. Soon the state's restaurants and bars followed.

Milvet understood why so many of the 12,000 people in Grant County, just 2 hours from Washington, viewed the dire predictions about the coronavirus as another partisan attack, like the Russian hacking of the 2016 election and Trump's impeachment.

"It sounded like just something else we don't have to believe in," Milvet said.

www.washingtonpost.com

This imbecilic President is actively causing American citizens to ignore vital preparations and defenses against unnecessary spread of this virus.

That you focus on the actual facts of the H1N1 response as a defense of Obama instead of a scathing indictment of Trump's criminal incompetence is indeed part and parcel to your delusion in discussing the tragedy occurring in America right now that doesn't give one whit about what China did or did not do at its inception.

Obama didn't do squat for 6 months.

H1N1 didn't overwhelm the hospitals. H1N1 didn't crash the stock market. H1N1 didn't shut down the economy. Within two weeks of the first case, Obama declared a national emergency and had a CDC test that worked. We shared our test with the world and produced a vaccine later that year. The death rate of H1N1 was just 0.02%, which is comparable to the flu each year.

I can still remember standing in line with my family to get the vaccine. We were incredibly grateful for the seriousness of Obama's approach to the outbreak.

You should be praising Obama for successfully handling that pandemic. Instead you're pretending he did badly to provide Trump with another cottony soft pillow to land on if he fails.

This self declared "war time president" telling the Medical personal do the equivalent of telling ww1 soldiers when the gas comes to piss on a cloth and cover their face - cause we have no cartridges for the gas masks. His lack of basic life experience have left him ill prepared to deal with issues real working people face.Obama learned from his experiences as president with h1n1 and ebola and set up the agency to watch for and deal with improved government response to pandemics.Trump decided this was a bad thing and dismantled it.Many other countries sent their own Investigators to Wuhan and shared their info with the USA through our partnerships.South Korea listened to their investigators and mobilized a response.Mean while Trump held Political rally's and Those bobbleheads on Fox mislead the rubes knowingly til it reached criminality and management ordered a shift in coverage.Mexico

I looked into this last week after a debate with a good friend that is sadly a trumper. H1N1 taught us a lesson (along with Ebola) that trump dismissed. Obama was out in front of H1N1 quicker than trump EXCEPT for the Emergency declaration. The thing is it wasn't that big of a deal when compared to the Annual flu and we knew that. COVID-19 is similarly for sure and possibly more infectious but puts FAR more of a load on hospitals.

Look at Italy. Talked to our friends in Milan again today - it is frightening what is happening there. In a couple weeks they have a years worth of flu deaths. Anyone still think it's just the flu? I would love to know why it is so less deadly in Korea period as well.

According to Trump we had people in China and they had access. He said it yesterday when asked why he cut the epidemiologist from the US team in India. Then he had one of the task force members in charge of that come forward and say we had so many people in China they refer to it as "CDC China."

#35 | Posted by JeffJ at 2020-03-23 12:27 PM | Reply

Yes the US has the highest infection rate and far fewer tests per capita than Canada. A couple of weeks ago BC had done more tests that the US with 1% of the pop.

Trump utterly failed the US, and is playing catchup. I live very near the epicenter and likely know people that Trumps incompetence will kill.

American infection rate is 33.3% higher than Canada using Jeff's numbers.
