Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

President Trump's response to the coronavirus pandemic sparked uproar and alarm among governors and mayors on Sunday as Trump and his administration's top advisers continued to make confusing statements about the federal government's scramble to confront the crisis, including whether he will force private industry to mass produce needed medical items.

Many governors and mayors said they feel ill-equipped for the coming storm, particularly the expected deluge of patients at hospitals and health centers.

[Illinois Gov. J.B.] Pritzker said on CNN that his state has received about a quarter of the personal protective equipment it has ordered from the federal government.

"I've got people working the phones calling across the world, frankly, to get this stuff to Illinois," Pritzker said, as he worried that states are probably "overpaying" in part because of the lack of decisive action by Trump.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a centrist Republican, said the Trump administration, through FEMA, "has to take the lead" in securing medical items.

"We are getting some progress. Now, it's not nearly enough. It's not fast enough. We're way behind the curve," Hogan said on NBC's "Meet the Press," as he detailed how Maryland is scrambling to find supplies without any guarantees from the federal government.

Hmmmm. Shouldn't mayors and governors be leading? If the mayor of San Antonio relied on Trump and failed to lead, he wouldn't be getting my vote to re-elect him. I look for leaders, not leaders who look for someone to take charge. As the saying goes, lead or get out of the way.

Trump is looking for the mayors and governors to take charge, also with minimal Federal support.

We can't have 50 states all competing for the same limited resources individually. The supply issue is really simple: There needs to be one entity that has unlimited resources (and can literally print money) who coordinates buying and distributing supplies and resources so that 50 different buyers aren't driving up the cost by bargaining against each other.

This is what the US military is already designed to do and what they do better than most any other entity on the planet.

The fact that so many Trump humpers want to again ignore both precedence and common sense in support of this flailing manchild, finally facing a crisis that won't be cowed by his tweets and personality explosions, is costing unneeded lives and suffering and worsening this crisis with each and every day of his inept response.

The mayors and governors are leading as best they can, with the minimal Federal support they're getting.

What are they missing? Nothing but this ....

including whether he will force private industry to mass produce needed medical items.

Why would this matter to them at this moment? Equipment is being produced, people are working to produce it, and deliver it.
Do you think the government forcing industry to "mass produce" needed medical items will make it happen faster?

How about all those states with CON laws, rescind them?
So the free market can build

More Hospitals?
More Ventilators?
Hospital beds?
More doctors and nurses?

CON laws constrain these .. but you won't here that from these complainers.

We can't have 50 states all competing for the same limited resources individually.

We won't ....

This is what the US military is already designed to do

Manufacture? They don't manufacture anything....

The fact that so many Trump humpers

That pretty much ends this conversation.

Look, it's no secret now that Donald is holding back because he wants to lay blame on the disaster on the governors and others.

Then its no secret Democrats are complaining because they want to lay blame on the Trump.

But here's Newsome saying Trump gave them everything they asked for.

Boaz. You're confused about just how much power individual states actually have.

Without the federal government. Most red states would have gone bankrupt and died off decades ago.

As much as we are a union of states. No one thinks "America" and pictures North Carolina or California. No. The country, America, is all the states. Borderless. As one united nation.

It's America haters, like you Boaz. Who are destroying our nation.

@#4 ... with the minimal Federal support they're getting. ...

Pres Trump has said he is not a shipping clerk, implying that the states are on their own trying to get medical supplies that are desperately needed.

The auto companies want to switch their factories over to producing, e.g., medical respirators, but Pres Trump does not seem to know whether or not he has signed the order that allows them to do so. First he says he signed it, then he says maybe he didn't.

The one thing Pres Trump is able to do, is make those admin officials in the press conference shower him with praise.

Maybe that's the only way they can get the President to stay focused on the crisis and not wander off somewhere...

Stop being such an ignorant moron Mattress. The US military is first and foremost at LOGISTICS! I never said a word about production idiot, I was talking about coordination, warehousing, shipping and getting supplies and resources where they need to be.

Can you imagine if we left it to individual states to supply their own National Guard units during tours at war? Can you see 50 states all vying against each other for limited resources, driving up prices in the process?

That is what's going on now. As it is it may not be the states that have the most urgent need for supplies that get them, it will be the states who offer to pay the most.

This is why there is a singular, top down, integrated process operated through a central authority. That this simple logic escapes you only shows that you don't think, you just belch out nonsense and stupidity, some in, most out of context.

So, Pres Trump followed through on every thing he said. But take a step back and look at what Pres Trump has been saying.

Pres Trump has been pushing back at the states' request for help with medical devices (~I'm not a shipping clerk~).

The California Governor you quote knows that Pres Trump's ego needs to be scratched,... a lot.

So he did. Even though the quote you cite could also be interpreted as damning with faint praise.

We have a petulant snowflake who acts like he 5YO in the WH. A narcissist who finds grievance with anyone who doesn't give him the deference he thinks he deserves. So a week ago when Combover Quisling changed his tune and realized that having 100k old Rethugs die on his watch would hamper his reelection the governors were willing to praise the new attitude toward leadership. But of course the Regime was just putting lipstick on a pig, it was still the same old incompetent Drumpf Regime.

In WA a furniture manufacturer has quickly retooled his production line and they are now making surgical masks and eye shields. There are other businesses offering help and looking for direction from the Regime and getting none. The grievance President needs somebody to fight with and to blame so he's going to war with Governors and mayors. Not a surprise as this WH has never offered anything resembling leadership at any time in the past three years.

This is a level of stupidity truly rare in the world...

1. "Why would this matter to them at this moment? Equipment is being produced, people are working to produce it, and deliver it.
Do you think the government forcing industry to "mass produce" needed medical items will make it happen faster?"

Yes, that's literally how it works. The President orders private industry to produce certain items. Why is it necessary? Because Private Industry isn't going to produce more than they think they can make money on. And the order can force other companies to manufacture items they don't normally. It's all about the speed with which we get the items. We do this in war time.

We literally have a law for just this reason.

2. "How about all those states with CON laws, rescind them?
So the free market can build More Hospitals? More Ventilators? Hospital beds? More doctors and nurses? CON laws constrain these .. but you won't here that from these complainers."

The Free Market is open in most states and they don't have enough of these things. The Free Market isn't going to build a new hospital or add more beds for an epidemic that will be over in 12 to 18 months.

3. "Then its no secret Democrats are complaining because they want to lay blame on the Trump."
We are months behind on testing due to Trump. Your idiot president told everyone there was nothing to worry about and now its too late. They lied to the American public and classified the Coronavirus briefing for this very reason. This is on Trump.

4. "But here's Newsome saying Trump gave them everything they asked for."
That's weeks old and only about a Cruise Ship. Honestly, how stupid are you?

Mackris, I get you are scared and desperate. It shows. But you have repeatedly said the only thing you care about is paying lower taxes. You are of an age that puts you in severe danger with this virus. Your small government, low taxes, me first attitude is coming back to threaten your life in a big way. And you still don't learn. Honestly, I can't feel sorry for you.

Trolling the libs is the only thing left for them.
Everything they crowed over about Trump is gone in a puff of virus.
The Dow is way down, Unemployment is way up, and the official government response plan assumes a pandemic will last 18 months or longer with multiple waves of illness.

Can you see 50 states all vying against each other for limited resources

It's your worldview that causes you to think like this. In the world as it's intended to be, each state has it's own resources, and there is no gold honeypot at the federal level with unlimited resources and power.

But you are a liberal. You cant see being independent and free. You want a sugardaddy to go beg when you need money.

#34 | Posted by boaz at 2020-03-24 08:10 AM | Reply

Boaz the country is in deep trouble and all you can utter is some gobblygoop about some right wing diatribe about independent states which doesn't mean a hill of beans to the deadly virus ravaging the people in this country. This is a national emergency which requires a robust federal response to this. Do you honestly think someone dying gives two schits about your petty whinefest?

#35 | Posted by LauraMohr at 2020-03-24 08:26 AM | Reply

Boaz,

I was quite clear to what I was referring to and your interpretation isn't remotely close. First, this isn't an ideological issue, it's one of logistics and practicality. States do not have the ability to create money, many operate under balanced budget amendments that ill serve the public in times of crisis like these. The federal government has the ability to open their checkbooks and insure that the needs of its people are met.

I've never said a word about "unlimited resources and power," that's your erroneous invention. For a person who's spent decades in the military, you seem to be wholly ignorant of its logistics capability. As I mentioned, each state's National Guard units don't independently vie for supplies on the open market, with each state competing against the other and driving up the costs to taxpayers. The federal government through the Pentagon does it from a top-down coordinated effort.

That is precisely what a national health crisis demands, not each state trying to create their own procurement and supply chains for scarce resources that are going to largely non-state entities, our hospitals and healthcare service providers. This is why FEMA was created because certain disaster response efforts overwhelm a state's ability to respond leaving the federal government as the provider of last resort for citizens facing dire circumstances, usually through no fault of their own but for time and location.

This is the most dangerous and life altering crisis to strike America since last century's Spanish Flu pandemic. To view this through a partisan lens is idiotic on more levels than can be counted. We pledge allegiance to the United States, not our state government, and it's always the United States' responsibility to protect its citizens regardless of arbitrary lines on paper that this virus could care less about and doesn't recognize.
