President Donald Trump said he'll stop using the term "Chinese virus," a sign that the U.S. and China want to deescalate their blame game over the pandemic, though his top diplomat kept up accusations that Beijing is waging a misinformation campaign about its origin.

Italy and Iran are suffering far more than the US - which country is most to blame for that?

How will insulting 1.5 billion people help a single Italian, Iranian or an American? Blame games don't help anyone. We have much to learn from the Chinese about this terrible virus, alienating them now serves no purpose and creates real problems for Chinese Americans here in our country. It's simply unnecessary evil.

We'll pass 1,000 dead today. This doubles about every four days. Ask what person is to blame for that.

Trump was serious about China until he wasn't, JEFF. He says thigs for effect, not to reflect reality. He tempted you out on the China limb and then sawed it off. He's done this sort of thing all of his life.

Ok, I get where that statement is coming from but let's also be realistic. So sometime China identified "something" was going on early to mid December. They don't literally know anything about it other than people are getting really sick and dying. They have probably identified it as a coronavirus at this time. They are likely thinking it is like SARS or MERS and they have time. They didn't. It was already too late. Don't forget the Bureaucracy of China doesn't reward people for creating panic - note the doctor who alerted his colleagues. The locals arrested him. Nobody seemed to even understand until late December just how infectious this disease was and even then the officials with power to do things didn't see the threat.

But then there is the recently publicly discussed fact that Trump removed the US CDC position that had a person embedded in the Chinese CDC a few months before the outbreak...

Look at our own country and Federal government. States are and have been doing more than the feds so far. Right now we are fight behind Italy for total infections and we will go soar past all of Europe in the not too distant future. Why?

China acted in the best interest of China. Exactly what Trumpy told them to do.

And now you want to complain about another country acting "responsibly " according to YOUR standards? This country is not acting responsibly and you expect others to do so?

This is the direct result of trumps America First nationalistic isolationist nonsense.

China will come out the other side stronger than us. If we continue being this stupid.

Communism was much better positioned to deal with this type of attack. It was easy for them to control the masses.

Individualists like Americans don't listen to authority very well. Because republicans have undermined the authority of our government for decades now. Because we have trained ourselves this way.

Diseased chickens coming home to roost and all.

Do you call everything that originates in China a "Chinese ______?"

Do you refer to everything in life by first stating its country of origin?

Can you at least admit that while the term might be technically accurate, it isn't normal to say it and there are obvious reasons for doing so?

Just kidding, i know you refuse to admit the obvious virtually 100% of the time.

I am not sure this is correct, although I can't be certain without knowing to which "study" you refer. I suspect it is the University of Southampton study quoted recently in this Axios article:

www.axios.com

Here is the study:

www.southampton.ac.uk

The critical difference is that the study and article do not state that "it's spread could have been contained by 95% globally" if China had acted sooner. The study makes it clear that it is referencing only the impact that earlier or later actions would have had on the spread of the virus in China - not globally. From the study:

"The research also found that if interventions in the country could have been conducted one week, two weeks, or three weeks earlier, cases could have been reduced by 66 percent, 86 percent and 95 percent respectively " significantly limiting the geographical spread of the disease. However, if NPIs were conducted one week, two weeks, or three weeks later than they were, the number of cases may have shown a 3-fold, 7-fold, or 18-fold increase, respectively."

The whole point is that once the virus is loose in a country, the speed with which authorities respond with effective containment measures dictates in large part how widespread and invasive the pandemic becomes. This is the reason why delays on Trump's part in denying the seriousness of the virus had real world consequences for the severity of the pandemic in the US.

As of 5:17 EDT the John Hopkins US infected total exceeded 80,000, placing us above Italy for the first time.

Deaths stand at 1132.

Our infection arc growth is now steeper than Italy's.

Don't be alarmed.
Part of the reason is that "people are dying who have never died before."
If you subtract those ones out, it goes down to maybe zero.

We could have contained it here pretty well here too.

But Trump refused.

There's lots of blame to go around.

On the other hand, while the Chinese screwed up, they also did a few things that gave the rest of the world time to prepare, i.e. shutting down the entire territory of Wuhan. We just wasted that time because the virus was magically going to go from 15 cases to 0 in the US according to Trump.

The Chinese acted stupidly. Trump doubled down on it. Then he tripled down on it. Now he's about to bet the house on it by opening up the economy by Easter.

#32 | Posted by Sycophant at 2020-03-27 12:43 PM | Reply

#32 not to worry.

Trump is just biding his time (i.e. waiting for the curve to bend) before he still start rewriting history and drilling lies into America's head that his response to this pandemic was the greatest in the history of the world.

And 35-45% of the country will actually believe it.
