Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, March 26, 2020

Americans displaced by the coronavirus crisis filed unemployment claims in record numbers, with the Labor Department reporting Friday a surge to 3.28 million. The number shatters the Great Recession peak of 665,000 in March 2009 and the all-time mark of 695,000 in October 1982. The previous week, which reflected the period before the worst of the coronavirus hit, was just 282,000.

Estimates for new jobless claims run as high as seven million.

Trump has no responsibility.

I fully remember 1982 unemployment. I was a young teenager watching my parents struggle with that.

That was half as bad as what were about to go through, assuming it doesn't double again soon.

Of interest is whether Donald Trump will attend the Inauguration of President Biden.

I'm no fan of Trump but Trump is right that this can't go on indefinitely. We should be making an attempt to "freeze" the economy like some European countries are doing. But of course, we have no plan and no responsibility. At least we may have unemployment for a while but that is of course not the situation you want.

"ut of course, we have no plan and no responsibility."

And whose job would it be to come up with a plan and to take responsibility?
If all of this was happening while Obama was President do you think Donald Trump would be loudly blamining him for it?
You know the answer, of course he would be.
Thing is though, Obama would actually have a plan and he would take responsibility.

No, it can't.

But instead of giving real relief to people at the bottom who will in turn pump all their money into the economy (shall we call it concentrate up economics?), they're using it as an excuse to dump cash into corporate coffers.

I'm starting to suspect that that brief period of time where they acted competently was just a flash in the pan to ease resistance to the corporate payout they realized they could make.

Well the Democrats did their proudest work making it so.

Impeachment trial right up until Feb 2020, wasting valuable time we could have used to prepare, instead lets have the Federal government waste its time arguing over witnesses.

Trump: Cancel flights from China
Democrats: You are a xenophobe.
Trump: Cancel flights from Europe.
Democrats: Air travel makes no difference.
Trump: Not sure I want to lock down the whole country indefinitely
Democrats: People are going to DIE if you don't lock it ALL down now.
Governments: Shelter in place.
Democrats: Millions are losing their jobs its Trumps fault
Trump: Not sure we can do this forever
Democrats: Millions are going to die!

The other problem is panic in the general population. The news outlets love a good pandemic because it keeps people glued to their screens. This causes the media to sensationalize their reporting.

I'll hold my criticism of this administration's handling of the crisis until later, right now more than ever we need to follow the CDC and their advice on minimizing the spread of this virus.

The stimulus should be primarily through unemployment benefits. Money to the people that have been sent home with no work. I've lost value in my 401K but, as of today, I still have my job and paycheck. If I get a government check now, it's going into savings and provide almost no stimulus to get things re-started. Give the stimulus to the consumers that will spend it.

South Korea and the United States both had their first coronavirus within 24 hours of each other. You can look at the two countries and see the difference in action and results.

United States:
On January 19, 2020, a 35-year-old man presented to an urgent care clinic in Snohomish County, Washington

South Korea:
The first confirmed case of the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in South Korea was announced on 20 January 2020.

So, who's fault was it when people lost jobs due to the various other pandemics during Rep AND Dem power? I assume Liberals today are going to say it was all the Reps' fault in any situation?

How about all the hatred related to partisan crap just stops and we stop basing fault on party lines? Especially considering Dems are on a very razor thin line right now where they are actually blaming corona virus on Trump? They aren't there yet but all of the hate rhetoric I'm seeing from Libs is them saying that because people get sick, Trump is to blame. Whenever you are caught asking yourself how in the hell could someone like Trump be elected, this is one of many answers that tell you why.

Way to twist, distort and exagorate things as much as possible.

Air Travel - once it is here and widespread it is too little too late to "shut it down". Like the countries successfully battling the disease we needed to be aggressively TESTING and running down people's interactions. Once the disease was here and the ball was dropped on testing the flights didn't really matter did they? THAT is what was being said. Besides that guess what? Flights are still rolling between the US and China and Europe and China. They never stopped. It's just we started banning non-US residents but Americans are sure flying back and forth and cargo on top of that.

Lock Down - Talk about bassackwards... Trump hasn't done it yet. States and local governments have done it but you kind of slid that in there. I don't see Democrats saying NOT to do it. Most were saying why hasn't it been done already? They wanted to provide MORE help to the people of this country directly. The people is see saying don't do it are all righties crying about the economy.

Not able to do it forever... - Nobody ever said "forever". Yes Democrats are telling you millions will die if we don't do what the experts tell us to do. Look at what is happening in NYC for Christ's sake. Mini-Italy/Wuhan.

Then name other Pandemics that have happened in modern times that caused job losses not to mention anything like this. I mean say the last 20-40 years. Today we have a lot more tools and knowledge. We have learned from the past and created plans and playbooks when you fail to acknowledge or simply dismiss this knowledge you get the Charlie Foxtrot we now have.

The feds SHOULD have taken the lead of just got the hell out of they way. Instead they are competing with the states (consistently out bidding states on need supplies) and dragging their feet. While people are dying Donnie Donuts is whining about people needing to be nice to him and telling states they should do more on their own.

There isn't much nuance to the fact that siding against corporate America and with the poorest in our society is a progressive point of view.

If Joe Biden were still in the Senate, he'd be one of the biggest advocates for this bill. The only attacks resonating with your POV are coming from the progressive left. Congratulations.

Job Vacancies and Inexperience Mar Federal Response to Coronavirus

Is the problem with the Trump administration that it's staffed by incompetents, bootlickers, and industry lobbyists with no experience at disaster response, or is the problem with the Trump administration that it's barely staffed at all? Both, actually.

The New York Times runs through some of the key vacancies and numbers: 20 of the top 75 jobs at the Department of Homeland Security are vacant or "acting." At the Defense Department, it's 21 of 60 top civilian positions. The Department of Veterans Affairs doesn't have a second in command or a head of emergency preparedness. The Internal Revenue Service is seriously understaffed as the federal government launches an effort to get stimulus payments to people using the IRS taxpayer database. But as troubling as the numbers are, some of the details reported by The Times are worse.

Thanks to an egregious lack of planning, our government is relying on buying medical supplies on Amazon, where they are largely not available due to everyone else buying them.

Also, in 2017, they hid the numbers a pandemic might affect in the U.S. This was before they disbanded the NSC Pandemic Response Unit.

"Also, in 2017, they hid the numbers a pandemic might affect in the U.S. This was before they disbanded the NSC Pandemic Response Unit."

Trump's ego and his hatred of Obama has guided some of Trump's most pathologically irrational decisions.

Unfortunately for the country for the past 3+ years, Trump's warped pathos didn't stop there.

Judging from the way he's refusing to call up the Defense Production Act tells me he's reached the "nothing-to lose" stage of his failed presidency He's going to burn the house down.

I'm one of them.

Yet, I've also been one of those folks who attempted to file for unemployment during the last recession and was repeatedly put on hold for HOURS. I finally gave up after unsuccessful attempts over about a week span. With this wave of unemployment, there is no way in hell the unemployment office was prepared to take on this sort of volume. Hence, the actual jobless numbers, I guarantee you, are far higher than these initial reports.

This is far more grey than black and white.
