Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, March 29, 2020

In such uncertain times, Americans can only hope that the media would follow suit and put aside partisan politics in the face of a global pandemic. Sadly, some journalists and fake news outlets can't help themselves. The media distorts and misleads, takes statements out of context, treats assumptions as facts, and in general, seems to want to sow as much rancor and fear as possible. This is irresponsible journalism in a time when the nation needs just the opposite.

Trump, who previously called alarm over the coronavirus 'a hoax' and compared it to the flu, now says he's 'always viewed it as very serious'

www.businessinsider.com

Trump mixes his words up like a salad most of the time but he had no business mixing a infectious disease with politics.. and neither do democrats. Extreme partisanship is crippling us because neither side has a low level trip switch.

@#4 ... Americans can only hope that the media would follow suit and put aside partisan politics in the face of a global pandemic. ...

The cited article is an interesting one, but with one significant flaw, aside from being an opinion piece and not cited as as such.

The article extrapolates the few cited facts to represent a wide-ranging media strategy and, without evidence to support that extrapolation, draws a conclusion that (surprise!) lines up with the author's opinion.

The article uses small bits of media [mis]reporting to try to present the author's opinion on the media's strategy as unquestionable fact.

The article ignores the very significantly larger body of reporting that has been properly and accurately creating a record of Pres Trump's gross missteps, misinformation attempts, and failures in fighting this pandemic.

@#1

While I would agree that none of the examples can be disputed, What the author fails to do is show any evidence for the article's conclusion.

Given the other op-eds she has written for RCP, and a similar lack of correlation of cited facts to conclusions in those op-eds, I am not surprised that she just winds up echoing the right-wing attempts to trash the media every chance it gets.

#12 - I got to the second one and said this is ridiculous. Let's just take that one and break it down. Here's the direct quote:

March 5, 2020: CBS News posted a story falsely claiming President Trump told sick people to go to work. If you read the actual quote, he is talking about healthy people going about their business not knowing that they have the virus: "So if, you know, we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better, just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work, some of them go to work, but they get better."

Charge: CBS said Trump told sick people to go to work.
Analysis:
First: The author posted a link to the story, and then paraphrased incorrectly what CBS reported. The actual CBS statement is:
"President Trump said people with coronavirus "go to work"." CBS did NOT, as the author said, say Trump "told sick people to go to work."

Second: Did Trump say people that have coronavirus go to work? (which is what the actual CBS quote stated), that may be found in the actual quote from Trump:
So if, you know, we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better, just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work, some of them go to work, but they get better."
Trump's statement clearly is talking about people that are sick and are going to work, or they couldn't get better by, you know, "even going to work... but they get better."

Third: The author is lying when she states that trump's is talking about healthy people going about their business not knowing that they have the virus. They may know, they may not. They may suspect, and go anyway. Pence stated new guidelines would be released "allowing some people who have been exposed to the coronavirus to resume working outside their homes if they wear masks."

So I didn't get past #2, and I glossed over #1 because we covered that in a LOT of detail on the DR already.

The above was too dishonest to bother with reading any more.

The very first one, about the hoax comment. It really doesn't matter what the context is, he used the word hoax to describe concerns about the coronavirus outbreak. And the bottom line is, the people who were criticizing him were right. So there never was a "hoax" at all.

I've got no time for all this garbage about the big, bad media and poor little Trump. I'm tapped out. Trump never shows respect for anything that matters"from people to science to history"so neither he nor his whiny ass defenders will get any respect from me. His brainless fans are still, right now, all over social media saying this whole thing is a hoax. What about the flu, what about diabetes? "Something doesn't add up!" And this one, fairly recent, "Dr. Fauci is a Democratic plant!"

Absolutely insane.

Trump is not 100% to blame for this pandemic, obviously. But his response was delayed, tragically, by his own ego. Not to mention the damage he did during his first three years to our nation's emotional well-being. Empathy and civility went out the door as "weak." We should be uniting during this crisis, and we can't, because every day Trump opens his mouth and disgusting and false statements fall out.

I could say more, but frankly I'm tired of talking about him.
