Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, March 31, 2020

The deceptively edited video that purported to show Joseph R. Biden Jr. endorsing President Trump's re-election bounced relentlessly around the internet, falsely painting the former vice president as too confused to know what office he was running for or whom he was vying to run against. The doctored video didn't originate with one of the extremist sites that trade in left-bashing disinformation. It was posted on Twitter by Mr. Trump's own social media director.

More from the article:

...The video, based on a speech Mr. Biden gave earlier this month, registered five million views in a day before his campaign responded " with statements to the press and cable interviews that largely focused on persuading Facebook to follow the example of Twitter, which had labeled the content "manipulated media." A direct social media counterattack, aides said later, would have risked spreading the damage....

This is precisely why you should never get your news from social media.

Now this is really depressing.

Sounds like a Trump concern.

@#2 ... This is precisely why you should never get your news from social media. ...

You know that, I know that, and I suspect most of the community on this site knows that.

On the other hand, I talk with a family member who lives on facebook and gets nearly all of his current events info from that site.

For example...

More Americans Are Getting Their News From Social Media
www.forbes.com

...It isn't news that most Americans aren't reading the daily newspaper or even watching the evening news. Instead of the paper of record delivering everything from local happenings and sports scores to current events on the global stage, more and more people are turning to Facebook and Twitter.

According to a newly published Pew Research Center report 55% of U.S. adults now get their news from social media either "often" or "sometimes" " an 8% increase from last year. About three-in-ten (28%) said they get their news "often," up from 20% in 2018.

As the Pew Research's reporters noted, "social media is now a part of the news diet of an increasingly large share of the U.S. population."...

The problem with social media as a news source is that the algorithms used tend to show you more of what you like to see so that you will spend more time on the social media site and see more ads.

The so-called "filter bubble."

TED - Beware online "filter bubbles" (2011)

TED - Beware online "filter bubbles" (2014)
www.ted.com

...Mark Zuckerberg, a journalist was asking him a question about the news feed. And the journalist was asking him, "Why is this so important?" And Zuckerberg said, "A squirrel dying in your front yard may be more relevant to your interests right now than people dying in Africa." And I want to talk about what a Web based on that idea of relevance might look like.

So when I was growing up in a really rural area in Maine, the Internet meant something very different to me. It meant a connection to the world. It meant something that would connect us all together. And I was sure that it was going to be great for democracy and for our society. But there's this shift in how information is flowing online, and it's invisible. And if we don't pay attention to it, it could be a real problem. So I first noticed this in a place I spend a lot of time -- my Facebook page. I'm progressive, politically -- big surprise -- but I've always gone out of my way to meet conservatives. I like hearing what they're thinking about; I like seeing what they link to; I like learning a thing or two. And so I was surprised when I noticed one day that the conservatives had disappeared from my Facebook feed. And what it turned out was going on was that Facebook was looking at which links I clicked on, and it was noticing that, actually, I was clicking more on my liberal friends' links than on my conservative friends' links. And without consulting me about it, it had edited them out. They disappeared.

So Facebook isn't the only place that's doing this kind of invisible, algorithmic editing of the Web....

etc... etc... etc...

I have a family member who's always plastering pro Trump stuff all over Facebook, most of it false. His response to being called out on a lie was "the Democrats and MSM lie about Trump all the time, so I'm going to lie about the Democrats and MSM". Mind you, a lot of of his posts are lies about how the Democrats and MSM constantly lie about Trump.

Our country is too fat and stupid too survive.

If we get another four years of Trump it will finally stop circling the drain and be flushed.

People do what works. Do you see Democrats doing this? No. Because they know it would be counterproductive.

You see Republicans do this because they know conservatives are dumb enough to fall for it.

The problem is not Trump. The problem is the people who support him and his political party.

Dumbing down? Meh.

Leaders are just a reflection of their base. Entertainers are just a reflection of their audience.

The Right dumbed themselves down. Their leaders and entertainers helped, but only because that was what the base really wanted.

You can't fix stupid, because usually stupid WANTS to be stupid.

You can't fix stupid unless stupid WANTS to be fixed.

You can lead a horse to water but He can't make You think. See what I did there? We are as much to blame because we are supposed to be smarter.

Who are the stupid ones? I am not sure anymore. The ones who are as thick as brick walls or the ones banging their heads against them bricks over and over wondering why our heads hurt.

It seems to me that deplorables just WANT to be deplorable.

Ignorance IS bliss.

Btw- you can "win" the internets but you can't keep it. You can't stay the "winner" for long. Someone "wins" the internet every day it seems. The world is changing very fast now. On top of that the deck is getting reshuffled.

Today's mortality rate for covid-19 (based on CNN's numbers) is an astounding 4.999%.

Like Trump's poll numbers. I deal with some right wingers telling me his numbers are rising, I just roll my eyes. We'll see what his numbers look like in a few weeks, months. I almost feel sorry for him. Almost but not quite.

We are going to be lucky to have less than 100,000 deaths.

Trump will get the blame.

Joe Biden can't keep his thoughts straight while words are coming out of his mouth. That has nothing to do with selective editing.

Keep pretending that editing has anything to do with Biden's brain leaking out of his ear any time he has to say anything when he isn't hopped up on Provigil.

#18 | Posted by Ben_Berkkake at 2020-04-01 01:21 PM | Reply

Lying doesn't help you, Berkkake.

This add was deliberate lying. It was edited. If Biden was so bad your corrupt incompetent lying side wouldn't have to resort to this kind of editing, capiche?

You know it's bad when even Facebook has to label it as "manipulated media."

#19 | Posted by YAV at 2020-04-01 01:25 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Lying doesn't help you, Berkkake.

Who's lying? You want to focus on the editing, when Joe Biden can barely complete sentences. Go for it. Dude is running on fumes in March.

It's right there in #20.
You may choose to use the word "ridiculous hyperbole" if you prefer, rather than admit you're lying.
I'll accept that.

#21 | Posted by YAV at 2020-04-01 07:35 PM | Reply

Biden may not be as sharp as he was 20 yrs ago,
but Trump is an utter basket case. Whole books
will be written (if not a library full) of the
various mental deficiencies which plague his
addled mind, when he leaves office.

Trump is a Cancer. Period. He is a Natural Disaster.
Everything the man touches, gets ruined or wrecked. When the
markets take the next decade to recover, when the 33%
unemployment rate, spikes past 40%, and when 100,000+
lie dead at THIS Administrations feat, maybe then,
5-10% of his brainwashed base will come to their
senses and admit that he was nothing but a fraud and
failure. Maybe then, in November, we can finally
rid this country of this Monstrosity, and start slowly
to pick up the pieces.

Why can't the dems give us a single, viable candidate? This era reminds me of when the gop used to trot out broken down ponies like dole and McCain and seemingly seriously thought they had a chance. Pls dems...put forward someone to vote for instead of merely vote against.

Every single candidate the Dems have put forward is far better than the Idiot we have now.

Every.

Single.

One.

I heard that Humpy Trumpy could kill 100,000 people on 5th ave and his base will still support him.

Look at a map of the states where there is still not COVID-19 actions being taken. Bet they'll all be red no matter what. They'll climb over bodybags just to vote for Trump again.

I've heard a lot about Federalism over the years. is having one person who can lead the whole country not a feature of Federalism? Help me understand.
