Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Gates acknowledged the "gigantic price" of shutting down the country and the economy, but said the alternative is worse. "We do then get an economic problem which is why you want to minimize the amount of time. Having states go at different things or thinking you can do it county-by-county, that will not work. The cases will be exponentially growing anywhere you don't have a serious shutdown," he said, adding later, "Basically the whole country needs to do what was done in the part of China where they had these infections." The good news, he said, is that China's shutdown has allowed the country to move past the disease.

Anyone care to chirp in on what shutting down the economy for 6-10 weeks would do to us? I cant even begin to imagine.

Sure thing.

Here's what it does for poor people around me; this is the text message I got from the county last week:

This is a message from County of San Diego. Your April, May, and June benefits will continue uninterrupted. Your renewals and status reports have been suspended for Medi-Cal, CalFresh, CalWORKs, and General Relief. The County will contact you at a later date if any information is required for your case.

other than federal, nothing. The midwest is fairing pretty well but I know its only a matter of time till we flare up like a bad hemorrhoid.

I have to disagree with Bill here.

In order for this to work there would have to be a GLOBAL shutdown. That's the only way to ensure the virus burns out and doesn't come back from hot spots.

Granted, under a more competent leader I would trust public health agencies would be given ample resources to catch incoming cases in a US only shutdown. But I don't and all we'd get under Trump is multiple smaller waves that would drag this thing out way longer than it would have taken otherwise.

It's already here.

News coming out of our major med center here is significant increases in COVID patients and ICU admissions. Still on the order of 35 patients or so (IIRC) but it jumped about two fold in a matter of 3-4 days.
