Florida's death count from COVID-19 likely stands significantly higher than the official number, indicating the disease is taking a more severe toll than thought, according to interviews with experts and information from local officials. The number of dead in Florida stood at 144 Thursday, according to the Florida Department of Health.

"indicating the disease is taking a more severe toll than thought"

Uh, no it's not.
It's taking pretty much the toll everyone that isn't Deplorable thought.
Made significantly worse by the lack of leadership -- or rather leadership in the wrong direction -- at the Federal and State level.

Trump screwed up, and now he does not have enough ventilators for Florida.
I'd say womp womp, but it's not much fun to mock the soon-to-be-dead.
Well, unless you're President George W. Bush, or just a Republican for that matter.

@#1 ... Made significantly worse by the lack of leadership -- or rather leadership in the wrong direction -- at the Federal and State level. ...

That is important, and worth repeating.

It is not that there was no or little leadership in the early stages of this viral infection.

It is that leadership at the Federal level, and at a State level in many states, was proactively leading in a manner that made it easier for the virus to infect, hurt and possibly kill Americans.

Let me say that again...

MSGT, doing one single good thing doesn't make up for barely doing anything else the next couple of months.

America has over 300,000 cases now so the travel restrictions clearly didn't work anyway.

Because most of our infections came in from China via Europe.... erm... so there.

On the other hand... maybe being infected by whites will make it easier... dying less death-like.

Using the declaration of a "pandemic" is more than a little misleading. WHO labeled it as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January as they received reports of person-to-person spread of the disease in countries other than China. The declaration of a pandemic is because it was spreading uncontrolled in a large number of countries around the World, including, by the way, the U.S.

As far as travel restrictions go, the quote from this article in STATNews covers what experts were saying pretty well:

The declaration comes as individual countries have started to close borders and restrict trade to China, and as airlines have halted some flights. Experts say such measures are not effective in stopping the spread of a virus and may discourage countries experiencing outbreaks from being forthright. The PHEIC gave Tedros the authority to formally recommend that countries not limit travel and trade to China, though other nations do not have to comply.

Even if we accept that limiting travel from China the way it was done were the correct thing to do, rhere were a lot of other actions that should have been taking place at that point, like starting to catalog the supplies in stockpile, giving a warning order to manufacturers of medical supplies, and a long list of other things. It appears none of that happened until March, or the end of February at the very earliest.

You were in the military. What would you think of a commander who didn't order weapons and ammunition until the supplies were already running out? That didn't increase the patrols when enemy action was expected? "Hey, I ordered barbwire be put up, what else could I do?"
