Since Chinese officials disclosed the outbreak of a mysterious pneumonia-like illness to international health officials on New Year's Eve, at least 430,000 people have arrived in the United States on direct flights from China, including nearly 40,000 in the two months after President Trump imposed restrictions on such travel ...

Mr. Trump has repeatedly suggested that his travel measures impeded the virus's spread in the United States.... But the analysis of the flight and other data by The New York Times shows the travel measures, however effective, may have come too late to have "kept China out," particularly in light of recent statements from health officials that as many as 25 percent of people infected with the virus may never show symptoms.

Many infectious-disease experts suspect that the virus had been spreading undetected for weeks after the first American case was confirmed, in Washington State, on Jan. 20, and that it had continued to be introduced. In fact, no one knows when the virus first arrived in the United States.

During the first half of January, when Chinese officials were underplaying the severity of the outbreak, no travelers from China were screened for potential exposure to the virus. Health screening began in mid-January, but only for a number of travelers who had been in Wuhan and only at the airports in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. By that time, about 4,000 people had already entered the United States directly from Wuhan, according to VariFlight, an aviation data company based in China. The measures were expanded to all passengers from China two weeks later.

Coronavirus was already inside the US and spreading weeks before Donald Trump enacted the ineffectual travel ban from China that really wasn't a travel ban from China. It was only a direct flight ban from China for non-US citizens, but one could still enter by connecting through another country from China first and then fly into the US. Not to mention US citizens were allowed to re-enter America from China after the ban was instituted as though coronavirus respected US Passports and wouldn't infect Americans that were in China.

The measures taken in no way were adequate to stop a virus that was already here and spreading. At most, the travel ban slowed wider spread and perhaps bought a small amount of time to marshall better responses to the virus' inevitable spread which were squandered in denial that the virus would do what nature created it to do; replicate exponentially wherever new hosts can be found.

Border closures are all one trick Trump have. That's what happens when he relies on a small handful of inept advisers who's primary goal is to rally the base, not govern.

It has got to be more now, but the 2010 census showed 1.5% or 3.8 million Chinese Americans. Of the 430k mention in this article how many were returning home from visiting family in China, how many were Chinese citizens coming here on business, how many were other Americans evacuating China as ordered, et cetera? I don't like the tone of this article.

Grumpy, nowhere in any article is it implied that everyone entering the US from China are of Chinese ethnicity regardless of their countries of residence. China is the 2nd largest economy on the planet and a center of global commerce. It's also a tourist destination for people all over the world.

While it's safe to posit that a large percentage of those coming into America from China may be of Chinese ethnicity, the larger point is that for the sake of the virus' spread, focusing on Chinese or Asians misses the point entirely. Many American businesspeople travel to and from China every day during normal times. Every one of them was a potential carrier of the virus too.

IOW, GRUMPY -

Coronavirus does not discriminate based on race or nationality. Which is why Trump boasting about cutting off all travel from China to the U.S. (a lie) was so amazingly laughable considering it wasn't a travel ban at all and was instituted long after many other countries instituted similar travel restrictions without labeling them a ban and allowing their leader to stand at a podium declaring himself a hero and victor.

This is what the left wants and they accused Trump of racism when he imposed restrictions in January.

This is what the left wants....

You should receive a vacation for even posting that. There isn't a single person here that wants to see anyone on planet Earth unnecessarily suffer due to this viral pandemic.

It's sick and twisted to even insinuate such a thought.

You appear to be just like Trump, a master at projection. Maybe you should ponder on that before you make your next keystrokes.

And I will apologize in advance if you were not implying that "the left" wants people to die so that Trump can be blamed for it.

Most of us here have spent the last 2 months trying to ring the alarm bells so that Trump would take the needed actions to minimize the amounts of infected and dead, unlike you who are obsessed with TDS as though the only TDS isn't Trump's own personal derangement itself.

This is what YOU wanted by constantly deflecting and downplaying this pandemic. What the left WANTED was a competent response by conservatives. That is what we did not get. Yeah, there may be some smug "I told you so" going on. But we would much rather you have listened to our (now probably) accurate predictions so we would not be in this situation now and not have the OPPORTUNITY to say "I told you so".

Any smugness on our part has not and will not cause people to die. Incompetence and sycophancy on the part of you and other conservatives has, is, and WILL cause people to die.

Trump is like the racist boy who cried we need to close the borders.

If the dumbfffk wasn't saying it every other sentence, maybe someone would take him seriously.

Such decisive action indeed. Not.

MSGT claiming that this is what the left wants is a disgusting piece of filth.

No, no, no. You've got it all wrong. t'rump assured the nation that another travel ban would limit the number of covid-19 cases to 15. (Not counting the 40,000)

From what I've read, the first confirmed case can be traced back to an individual in China in mid-November. This Guardian article is one example discussing it.

Assuming that is true, the likelihood is it was already here in the U.S. by December. I believe it has probably been spreading here undetected since then. Just my speculation, but it seems a high probability that I'm correct, given the high transmissibility of this virus.
