As health officials warned Floridians were at "grave risk," the state dismantled the defenses it built against a coronavirus-like crisis.

Fifteen years ago, Florida braced for a pandemic.

Officials knew as early as 2005 that an outbreak could devastate the state and infect much of the population. They wrote reports predicting a crisis remarkably similar to the one playing out now: a virus that could infect more than a million Florida residents.

And they responded in force, bolstering the state health department with resources and specialized workers to combat a potential crisis.

But that operation was dismantled by governors and lawmakers more worried about the bottom line, the Tampa Bay Times has found.

After so many sad stories at the state and federal level, was any state adequately prepared for this type of pandemic? :(

Was any D state adequately prepared for this pandemic? Not trolling, just looking for well managed state leadership to hold as an example.

I as much as I disagree with Gov. Newbeam's progressive tendencies, he has done probably the best job with the pandemic of any Governor in the US, especially with a State that is larger than many countries.

Long term thinking is no longer a norm. Anywhere.

Because budgets can be planned, at best, two or three (?) years in advance owing to constant rightwing slash and burn budget tactics and tax cuts.

States have had to pick up more and more of the tab on things like education and social welfare programs, leaving less money for things like public health that always seem to be required just over the horizon...until the need is there. Like now.

#2 Preparing for a pandemic is a federal job. Bush knew it and so did Obama. The umpalompa alone, could ---- this up.
