Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, April 05, 2020

If people continue social distancing, coronavirus cases may level off by the end of April, Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates said on "Fox News Sunday." But he added that life still won't return to "truly normal" until a vaccine is distributed.

Gates also suggested ...that if the United States implements a consistent nationwide approach to shutdowns, increases testing and uses a data-based strategy to develop treatments and a vaccine, a second wave of the epidemic could be avoided.
These are two forward-looking points that I believe aren't being given the thought they deserve. Trump continues to show a complete scientific ignorance of what this virus is and how it will continue to affect and infect (and likely re-infect) Americans for months unending until a viable vaccine is available.

He thinks this is just one particular wave to get past and then everything can go back to normal. Nothing could be further from the truth. While it's absolutely possible that after the first wave(s) subside much of our economic activity can be restarted, but it won't be in any way what we just left. Social distancing will be the new norm until a vaccine re-permits us to gather in large groups in confined spaces since at no point will everyone have contracted the virus nor carry its antibodies, so the fear of igniting yet around round of spread will likely keep large spaces unoccupied. Masks will be obsequious just like we've seen in Asian countries on tv.

Everything is going to be different. And someone in authority needs to intelligently prepare Americans for what is to come.

"Everyone predicting that this pandemic will radically change America should at least reckon with what happened in 1957. The so-called "Asian flu" killed 116,000 Americans and 1-2 million people worldwide and today, literally almost no one remembers it. Even though 10% of the US population is 70+ years of age, including many of the most important figures in government."

I think we all need to remember that "normal" existed before the Polio vaccine and before all the other vaccines. "Normal" is going to be, for a long time to come, existence with deadly viruses. If not this one then it will be the next one.

I've heard rumors already that China has reopened wet markets? We actually need confirmation on that but if it is true serious consequences should be implemented. Nothing China exports should be welcomed elsewhere in the world until they permanently clean up their act.

Coronavirus is not the flu. There is no vaccine for the virus and still limited understanding of its pathology. Every single day we're learning more, but extrapolations certainly can be made based on the pool of data at any particular point in time, and that is all this is.

If and until there is a vaccine, what we consider as "normal life" cannot conceivably go on exactly as it was before. Now it's believed that infectable droplets of the virus can be expelled through normal talking, breathing, coughing, and sneezing up to 20+ feet from the source of emission and that they may stay suspended in air for minutes at a time.

What this means is that putting people together without masks to stop emission spread should be over. That means unmasked public activities should not or cannot occur. How can people eat or drink in public with their mouths covered? Are you ready for this possibility?

Now extrapolate all the other human activities taken in shared air space with significant groupings of people. You tell me how our immediate future isn't a harbinger into anything but what has been heretofore considered as normal.

We haven't forgotten it, the strain that spread in 1957 (H2N2) genetically shifted to H3N2 which was another pandemic in 1968.

And is a current seasonal influenza strain that has been kicking a-- the last few years.

I suspect the same will happen with this. It'll become seasonal with some years being worse than others due to genetic drift or time allowing for an increase in the non-immune population.

Life should not return to normal. We know better. We have better science. We have a more integrated economy that suffers more from isolation.

We need to prepare for the next pandemic. Learn from this one. Get better at detecting and responding to pandemics. And not let Joe Exotic, with an inheritance, get elected and f everything up because he thinks being born rich makes you smart.

I've been wondering why Tiger King has been such a popular show given the grotesque nature of the...ahem...characters.

But you nailed it. We're seeing what Trump would have been without a $500 million dollar inheritance.
