Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In Louisiana about 70 percent of the people who have died are African-American though only a third of the state's population is black. In the county around Milwaukee, where 27 percent of residents are black, nearly twice as many African-American residents tested positive for the virus as white people. And in Chicago, where African-American residents make up a little less than a third of the population, more than half of those found to have the virus are black.

The death toll there is even more alarming: African-American residents make up 72 percent of those who have succumbed to the virus in Chicago. "Those numbers take your breath away, they really do," said Lori Lightfoot, the mayor of Chicago, who announced the city's figures on Monday. "This is a call-to-action moment for all of us."

Data on the race of Americans who have been sickened by the coronavirus has only been made public in a handful of places, and it is too limited at this point, experts say, to make sweeping conclusions about the national or long-term picture. But day by day, the emerging statistics show black residents being infected at disturbing rates in some of the nation's largest cities and states.

The racial disparities in coronavirus cases and outcomes, public health researchers said, reflect what happens when a viral pandemic is layered on top of entrenched inequalities.

Naw, the damn China virus is just racist. Have you seen it in a microscope? Damn thing is carrying little tiki torches all over its structure. < / snark>
The data emerging in some places, researchers said, is partly explained by factors that could make black Americans more vulnerable in any outbreak: They are less likely to be insured, more likely to have existing health conditions and, as a result of implicit racial bias, more likely to be denied testing and treatment. And then, the researchers said, there is the highly infectious nature of the coronavirus in a society where black Americans disproportionately hold jobs that do not allow them to stay at home.
Then there's that....

Isn't it something how the incredible amount of racial disparity in this country doesn't lead Deplorables to think our country is racist?

"what happens when a viral pandemic is layered on top of entrenched inequalities."

Recession, pandemic, global warming, earthquakes, floods... Republican administrations, all tougher on the least equal in society.

There is a scene in "All American" where it really illustrated medical bias well.

Football star is shot in a drive by not targeting him. Nurse calls for O- blood transfusion. Kid is dying. Doctor wants to wait to get his specific blood type, and not waste a limited supply of O-, talks about gang violence..

This is scene immediately after it, couldn't find the ER/ICU clip;:

"This is Trump's fault how?"

Trump got elected on a platform of White Nationalism.

This isn't Trump's fault.
This is Trump's greatest victory.

"Black Americans Face Alarming Rates of Covid Infections"

Add this to the my daily dose of anxiety. Thankfully my wife's test came back negative Thursday and as of today nobody in our family has been infected.

Wow... wish we could say we lived in a world where an ad like that would automatically eliminate you from being supported by the voters.

I believe that when all the data is crunched and the virus is analyzed, they'll find that some ethicities are disproportionately vulnerable to it. Maybe related to sickle cell trait?

Don't know if it's as much genetics as it is societal factors such as living conditions and overall health discrepancies.

Air pollution linked to far higher Covid-19 death rates, study finds

A small increase in exposure to particle pollution over 15-20 years was already known to increase the risk of death from all causes, but the new work shows this increase is 20 times higher for Covid-19 deaths.

More minorities and poorer people live in areas with worse air quality in addition to having less access to preventative healthcare and overall poorer nutrition.

It makes sense that all of these are probable factors in the noted group disparities.

#13 men are disproportionately vulnerable to it. Maybe related to the rudimentary Y chromosome that males have.

There's no reason for Trump to value the lives of Black people.

They aren't going to vote for him.

Underlying health issues....

Currently I am seeing a larger percentage of black drivers I am assuming it's because they still have to work. Lack of health insurance I'm sure is a major factor in the outcomes for both existing health issues and minimal care once/if diagnosed. So yeah two pretty major factors.

One group I'm not hearing about and frankly it surprises me is Hispanics. I have driven by and been told about (by Hispanics who were there) of large extended family and friend gatherings. I almost never see Hispanics with face masks I'm not sure if they aren't getting the information because of language or just don't care.

Black and Hispanic people in New York City are about twice as likely to die of the virus as white people are, according to preliminary data released on Wednesday by the city.

According to the city's data, the death rates for different ethnic groups are:

Hispanics: 22 deaths per 100,000 people.

Blacks: 20 deaths per 100,000.

Whites: 10 deaths.

Asians: 8 deaths.

A variety of socioeconomic variables are likely at play.

At least where I am the majority of cases are in the poorest, most run down AA neighborhoods.

Health disparities are pretty well known, at least among people who choose to know about them.

The pandemic is displaying the consequence of health disparities in high contrast.

Some dismiss what they see as "underlying conditions" in order to out it all on the victim, and not a problem with the system that delivers these racist results.
