Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, April 08, 2020

John Prine, who for five decades wrote rich, plain-spoken songs that chronicled the struggles and stories of everyday working people and changed the face of modern American roots music, died Tuesday at Nashville's Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was 73. The cause was complications related to COVID-19, his family confirmed to Rolling Stone.

Here's a not so great video with pretty good sound of John Prine and Dan Auerbach from the last time I saw John live.

He is a legend whose last albums were as innovative and funny and philosophical as ever. The man will be missed.

When I Get to Heaven
John Prine

When I get to heaven, I'm gonna shake God's hand
Thank him for more blessings than one man can stand
Then I'm gonna get a guitar and start a rock-n-roll band
Check into a swell hotel; ain't the afterlife grand?

And then I'm gonna get a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long
I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
'Cause this old man is goin' to town

Then as God as my witness, I'm gettin' back into showbusiness
I'm gonna open up a nightclub called "The Tree of Forgiveness"
And forgive everybody ever done me any harm
Well, I might even invite a few choice critics, those syph'litic parasitics
Buy 'em a pint of [?] and smother 'em with my charm

'Cause then I'm gonna get a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long
I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
Yeah this old man is goin' to town

Yeah when I get to heaven, I'm gonna take that wristwatch off my arm
What are you gonna do with time after you've bought the farm?
And them I'm gonna go find my mom and dad, and good old brother Doug
Well I bet him and cousin Jackie are still cuttin' up a rug

I wanna see all my mama's sisters, 'cause that's where all the love starts
I miss 'em all like crazy, bless their little hearts
And I always will remember these words my daddy said
He said, "Buddy, when you're dead, you're a dead ----------"

I hope to prove him wrong, that is, when I get to heaven
'Cause I'm gonna have a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long

I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
Yeah this old man is goin' to town
Yeah this old man is goin' to town

A legendary American singer-songwriter whose music championed people living outside the circles of power. A huge loss.

The video with Kacey Musgraves was from a cruise ship.

I've never been on one, but apparently there are (were...) cruises that are just focused on live music. So you just drink and check out bands all day and night.
Probably be a while before those return.

RIP John.

Oh FFS.

In spite of ourselves. We may not end up sitting on a rainbow. But we will get thru this. In spite of ourselves.

What? You don't believe the virus is contained?

Are you saying you don't believe the virus is not contained?

You Don't Believe? What is wrong with you?

Kellyanne Conway would like a word with you Mr!

"15 soon be zero!"

"It's just the flu!"

"It will blow over. Like magic! "

In Spite of Ourselves is hilarious. I saw Iris DeMent not long ago at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, a former church-turned-venue that seats around 800. It was a great concert made even better by her between-song banter.

John Prine's parents were from Paradise, Kentucky. Paradise no longer exists because the area was strip-mined for coal and became home to a coal-burning electric plant which left it too polluted for humankind. That's one hell of a folk singer origin story.
