Some officials have even begun mulling the type of event Trump may want to mark the day when nationwide restrictions are lifted after he suggested a "big celebration" when the crisis is over.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

Once we OPEN UP OUR GREAT COUNTRY, and it will be sooner rather than later, the horror of the Invisible Enemy, except for those that sadly lost a family member or friend, must be quickly forgotten. Our Economy will BOOM, perhaps like never before!!!

Like a May Day celebration?

Well we've got to give him credit. Trump's trying to do everything he can to get his base sick or killed before the election. Unfortunately not enough of these fools walk around with MAGA hats on so we know exactly who to avoid.

Maybe he'll try to combine Memorial Day with his desired "COVID_19 is no more" celebration.

Feeding his ego at the cost of American lives.

I'm kinda surprised this is so easily tolerated by Republicans. I truly thought some of them were only in it for the tax breaks, and didn't buy into the death cult side of the GOP.

Yes, let's all gather together for big celebrations in May, when there will still be no vaccine for coronavirus and tens of thousands of contagious people will be living among us -- including some who are unknowingly spreading it without having any symptoms.

There would be no better way to reopen the economy than holding events that will cause it to close again within two weeks.

April 8: US records highest number of deaths in a single day

Trump world: Oh good we can go back to normal soon

This virus doesn't like to party or celebrate, and it won't give in to Benedict Donald's timetable.

I'm not.

They're mentally ill, or culturally decayed, or something equally dire and sweeping.

This was almost my first thought.

Didn't I recently get into a bit of trouble by suggesting that Donald Trump has, and wants to, kill people?

#10 | Posted by Zed at 2020-04-08 04:28 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Almost my second thought was whether Jared will be placed in charge of the May celebrations?

#11 | Posted by Zed at 2020-04-08 04:30 PM | Reply

I am watching the US drama unfold from a much safer country with universal health care, and I would be surprised if the US peaks before the end of May. God help you all because nobody deserves such an inept Administration.

Remember that the virus will come back next fall/winter when the us will not be prepared

A Coronavirus Celebration is the perfect way to welcome a Pandemic Summer! Trump is completely out of his mind and living in his own world.

We need to have a big parade, with tanks and missiles and stuff.

We can put all the coffins on flatbed trucks.

Any poor unfortunates still in hospital can be pushed down the parade route in their beds.

Trump Death Parade is a very fitting response to the crisis.

There haven't been any good vaccines for coronaviruses ever developed. So this may not pan out with a good vaccine.

It may have to be the old fashioned way through herd immunity. That could take a while and be kind of gruesome on the way.

Maybe it will weaken on it's own.

By what definition? What do you consider "good"?

I want to celebrate in December.

#19 | Posted by bored at 2020-04-09 01:28 AM | Reply

I don't think he wants to be bothered by opening up the country in sections or by States. This is already getting to be too much work for him. In a way I'm glad that its going to be up to the governor's on when to open up again and not him because I think he's going to kill us all if we let him. After all he created this in the first place by shutting down the pandemic team

#18 My understanding is that no effective vaccines have been developed for coronaviruses in humans. So by good I mean effective. If you know more please share. A bird virus vaccine
has been developed. But none for human use.

#21 | Posted by Effeteposer at 2020-04-09 07:59 AM | Reply

There are multiple vaccines that were developed that showed high efficacy in preclinical animal studies.

There was no demand (SARS faded and MERS is too sporadic and geographically limited) for a vaccine so companies didn't push it into human trials.

Vaccines currently being tested for this virus are based on that data.

There were more problems with the Mers and SARS vaccines then you are saying. They tried antibodies but they didn't last in human studies.
They tried dead viruses but that didn't confer immunity. My understanding is admittedly limited but I know enough to know it wasn't just a business decision to pull the plug on these attempts.

Subunit vaccines against the spike (S) protein or even a portion of it called the receptor binding domain (RBD) induced potent antibody responses and neutralizing activity against infections.

Yes, there was a problem in that some of them, for unknown reasons, induced hepatitis when the vaccinated animal was challenged. IIRC that happened only when full S protein was used to immunize, not the RBD.

#25 | Posted by jpw at 2020-04-09 03:16 PM | Reply

Simpler,I'm not trying to prove anything. Layman's terms. The vaccines triggered hepatitis in animals for unknown reasons. They also were not that effective. Explain why.

"The vaccines triggered hepatitis in animals for unknown reasons. They also were not that effective. Explain why."

In a broad sense, it's because they're toxic, and the liver is where the body metabolizes most everything, including toxins, giving rise to hepatitis.

#28 | Posted by snoofy at 2020-04-09 06:39 PM | Reply

So we can die from the virus. OR we can be injured and maybe die from the vaccine. NICE.

"injured and maybe die from the vaccine."

I suspect that in your unbridled ignorance you are dutifully unaware of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System.

I never said I would'nt take it,
if it was approved. I definitely would. That being said, the first few people immunized would be guinea pigs. I'm not sure I would be one of them.
How about you? Or are you gonna wait and see if people croak after getting it? Then get your shot.

No worries.

The real celebration will happen in November.
