Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

New research indicates that the coronavirus began to circulate in the New York area by mid-February, weeks before the first confirmed case, and that travelers brought in the virus mainly from Europe, not Asia. The research revealed a previously hidden spread of the virus that might have been detected if aggressive testing programs had been put in place.

"The majority is clearly European," said Harm van Bakel, a geneticist at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who co-wrote a study awaiting peer review.

A separate team at N.Y.U. Grossman School of Medicine came to strikingly similar conclusions, despite studying a different group of cases. Both teams analyzed genomes from coronaviruses taken from New Yorkers starting in mid-March.

On Jan. 31, President Trump barred foreign nationals from entering the country if they had been in China during the prior two weeks.

It would not be until late February that Italy would begin locking down towns and cities, and March 11 when Mr. Trump said he would block travelers from most European countries. But New Yorkers had already been traveling home with the virus.

So the worst coronavirus outbreak in the world (outside of the rest of the US) was started and germinated by travelers coming into New York from Europe, not China. And our President Nero fiddled until March 11 while the virus quietly spread and began creating victims.

And with these findings showing that early testing would have mitigated further spread had it been available, Trump is allowing FEMA to stop funding federally-supported testing sites when exponentially more are needed on an ongoing basis to help stop more and more waves from spreading. This is Trump's legacy.

He got blasted by the likes of Biden, Pelosi and the entirety of the MSM for his China travel ban issued on January 31 as being xenophobic and racist. That move undoubtedly saved lives.

"... his China travel ban issued on January 31 "

Which only let in 430,000 Chinese since then.

He was blasted for trying to imply that the virus could be stopped by keeping Chinese people from entering America, combined with his pronounced xenophobia, it was exactly what it seemed. Had Trump stopped ALL traffic from China, including US citizens wanting to return, then it wouldn't have been viewed that way. He didn't institute universal health checks for people entering the US, nor did he plan a quarantine strategy that could have safely allowed US citizens to return but not potentially infect the public before they were cleared themselves.

The virus doesn't discriminate on who it infects, ergo, stopping traffic from one location after the virus had already gone global wasn't going to have the effect he claimed.

There is only one way to keep the virus from spreading: Stop people from interacting closely enough for the virus to jump from person to person. The ridiculous one-note travel ban was as feckless as your argument and just as oblivious of reality.

Jeff, all travelers had to do was connect through another country then enter the US. 40,000 people coming from China entered the US after 1/31. While your point is unquantifiable, the ban was akin to using a screen door to stop a bucket of water.

"It. Saved. Lives."

And what did making exceptions for 400K since then? As long as you're dealing in raw positives or negatives.

Allowing flights from Europe?
It. Cost. Lives. Understand this.

We done here, or did we want to compare savings to costs?

Zero evidence to support this.

At best, it bought time. Time that was immediately squandered.

No. Trump messed up again. The virus came in from Europe.

He's doing what his supporters want to do and not what the best ideas are. He's playing a political game that costs lives. He's no better than Osama Bin Laden.
